  • fucking strange that everytime the tories are in power this country goes into depression same in the 80s and same as present,,,,

  • Brilliant!

  • I looked just like this in 1987, but i'm American and from Texas so i was REALLY a fucking outsider, even much so than I think these lads would have been at the time in Manchester, UK. I was going to school up in Austin, TX and The Smiths were huge among a small group of us fanatics for them and New Order, The Cure, Depeche Mode, etc. We were misfits at the time and not on purpose, but now I would say that whole look and genre is tired and there are more "misfits" looking strange than are Preps.

  • the brit's have bloody bad chicklett's,i love the smith's

  • Stop comparing US and UK and listen to this song, it's so fucking catchy.

  • fuckin tuneeee

  • lol all the people in this vid look like the fucking hipster twats in the smoking area at college

  • i hadn't heard it before so i didn't mind listening

  • addicted to this song!

  • lets all ride bikes and wear funny glasses.....fags

  • @xtcottonballx man dont diss d moz

  • I forgot how beautiful Morrissey was when he was younger.

  • Comment removed

  • i want to ride a bike with Morrissey :(

  • I wish people would shut the fuck up about "hipsters" and just listen to the music!

  • I'll have to stop you there, ive heard this before, maybe its because its a top song and i keep pushing "replay"

  • dang end with a seventh chord.

  • bikes and glasses everywhere!

  • Wait..where are the mosques?

  • Morrissey is 52 and still probably gets more than Justin Bieber

  • Johnny Marr.... one of the top 5 guitarists post Hendrix... believe it my young friends or just accept it begrudgingly... and the smiths were about songs not guitar heroics

  • @uneedtherapy42 johnny marr's the only reason i can listen to morrissey...

  • @j9lili well said.... he (Morrisey) does get to be a bit much... but Marr is always there with something fresh and interesting (ex. This Charming Man) such an underrated player!!

  • @j9lili

Really? Not for his amazing voice/lyrics? Don't get me wrong, Marr is, I believe, one of the greatest guitar players of all time, but personally I think Morrissey is THE greatest lyricist of all time, hands down. I listen to The Smiths for both, really, but when it boils down to it, it comes down to Morrissey for me, then Marr. But to each their own.

  • @uneedtherapy42 yep i remember he was in the cover of jan 1990 issue of guitar player magazine and it was a bit controversial cuz that was still the heavy/hair metal era (and of course malmsteen, satriani, vai, johnson, etc) and everyone's saying he doesn't belong there (in the mag) esp in the cover

  • Saw the boys over 20 times...Thank-youfor this you bald buddha...Gemma ,Canada!!! Forever

  • OMG the gayest video. I don't feel bad that I'm dating Maria anymore

  • England is ugly

  • @kapplejacks22 sod off,do you have bands like we do

  • @kapplejacks22 no it's not, america is actually. london is a far better looking city than new york and day of the week.

  • @GreenDookieDay My grandmother lives in manchester, England...and I refuse to visit her because it's always so damn rainy and foggy over there. Why take time off of work to go on vacation at such a depressing place. I need sunshine baby!

  • @kapplejacks22 yes but England has culture, where sadly your country does not. I'd rather live in England and have it rain ever day then live in a country without free health care, legalised ownership of guns and lacking any real decent exports culturally.

  • @GreenDookieDay This conversation isn't about healthcare or guns! THE FACT STILL REMAINS THAT ENGLAND IS UGLY!

  • better than america, have fun with all the hurricanes, wildfires, guncrime, shit healthcare, obesity, shit music and general hatred from the rest of the world. so fuck you!!!

  • @daniel7319 Make sure you have an umbrella next time you go outside because it will be raining as usual LOL....Ha it's probably raining right now. Get mad all you want...it's not my fault you don't get enough Vitamin D from a lack of sunshine...and have low Serotonin levels, which causes depression. Your mad and depressed Oh my. LOL

  • @kapplejacks22 well if weather is our biggest problem then im fairly happy to be living here. you americans have much bigger issues to deal with than rain, as you said all i need is an umbrella you're gunna need a shit load more than that to solve all the fucked up things that are wrong with america.

  • @kapplejacks22 but it's not, just because one area of manchester is a bit grimy, the whole country isn't.

  • @GreenDookieDay England still sucks

  • @776danzig Ah... but Morrissey and The Smiths gave us Americans some hope knowing that it was as miserable in England in the 80's as it was here in the U.S.! He was a beacon of style, poetic genius and brash exhibitionism that was needed to counter the "Pop" shit music/style that was current (and STILL Is today!) at the time!

  • Like Mark Ronson's version better...but this is a nice version too...sounds very mellow and old school.

  • Manchester doesn't look so 'edgy' now its full of smart new apartment blocks and Nathan Barley types,Have they started drinking shandy up there yet?

  • Ronson needs to DIE for his crimes against music.

  • I remember the first time I saw this video. I was in 8th grade and stayed up late to see the premiere of it on 120 minutes on MTV. I'm sure I taped it on our vhs so I could later watch it over and over. I still remember the thrill from seeing all those gorgeous Morrissey-wanna-be's (girls as well as guys!!) It's still a thrill, as well as a flashback to an ealier time in my life, to see it now. Love you, Stephen Patrick Morrissey - for ever.

  • wish i went to specsavers, cool as fuck

  • thumbs up if youre neighbours are cunts). If you dont want any attention some cunt will annoy you .

  • adoro essa musica =)

  • Love this tune! I think the Ronson cover is pretty descent too.

  • stop me now oh stop me!....tune!

  • This song always reminds me of someone... thank God they're not in my life anymore!

    Love The Smiths!

  • You gotta love Morrissey's cynical (and self-deprecating) lyrics. ".....and the pain was enough to make a shy, bald buddhist reflect and plan a mass murder....." I played the hell out of my "Strangeways, Here We Come" cassette. Ah, I miss my carefree junior high school days of the mid-80's.

  • this band and song kind of sucks. so does morrisy and his faggy hair.

  • @robbiejojo Not as bad as your grammar sucks.

  • @andrewptob not as bad as your put downs wide boy

  • @robbiejojo you sad sad human being

  • @robbiejojo I guess negative attention is better than no attention at all, right?

  • Great video, can't imagine riding a bike around most of these areas any more, too many cars

  • My favorite band. I love you :)

  • I hope those aren't fixed gear bikes

  • He's on a BIKE!! :)

  • They all look hard as fuck! Not to be messed with.

  • 49 People have heard this one before.

  • fuck fixies. those bikes are the coolest!

  • Is this owned by the corperate whores Stop me .Mosa was taking the piss hipsters are just dull.OScar wilde was before Mosa .

  • my life in this song

  • THAT'S MY CREW, BITCHES.

  • I hope...

  • Hipsters are cunts

  • If i got stuck on a desert island and could take 1 thing, It would be a cd player with every smiths/stone roses cd's. XD

  • @Emilybossy You could just take the CD player then.

  • @TheEloeo It would be a job lot of ebay, that came with all the cd's. because some idiot would be selling theyre collection :P

  • Totally 80's. Unforgetable band for those who lived those times...

  • i love those red brick walls

  • Look at the urban decay of the industrial north, thanks a lot Thatcher and all the greedy rich southern twats who voted her in in the 80s!

  • @Rentaghost76. Dont blame the South, just as many Rich greedy Wankers in the North, Cheshire, North Yorkshire, And Lancashire. At least the Miners in the South ( Kent) Stayed loyal to the Strike, Not like you soft cunts up North, Nottinghamshire, Lancashire. Wigan is know for being Humble pie eaters, Not the Pie eaters, You would like the South to know you as. FIrst trade union ever, Formed in the South (Dorset). So get your fact`s right. Northern Unions always fold like a pack of cards.

  • @Rentaghost76 jobs went to china and india mate and they continue to do now in the south as well. Welcome to post-industrial Britain aka poverty.

  • i got into the Smiths years after they split !! Up there with the Beatles and Led Zep in my humble opinion

  • classic.

  • few are evolved enough to like the smiths and meshuggah at the same time. few...or the cure and napalm death...or stereolab and unwound...grow up folks. oh and you over there, evolve. and the rest of ya? mutate! happy holidaze ;)

  • The Smiths... being hipsters before it was cool...

  • @FriedChickenofDeath6 Being a hipster was never cool.

  • @FriedChickenofDeath6 don't you mean before it was too mainstream?.

  • @lambovsatan225 That too... haha

  • @FriedChickenofDeath6 Idiotic comment. Hipsters wish they could be like The Smiths. That's their whole M.O., sonny.

  • @lavieperdu Idiotic "Mister-Know-It-All" logic. I guess someone's sense of humor is lost and can't be found...

  • @FriedChickenofDeath6 I don't being a hipster was ever cool, lol

  • @xgmb45 Being hip had its golden times, it used to have a glow if you were part of a scene... but now the word "hipster" is not much more than a pejorative term.

  • Some people love the Smiths, some people hate them. Some of us LIVE them, and trust me, that's a bitch and a half.

  • Why/how can people say a word about The Smiths, realistically? You don't have to like them but you can't claim they've had no influence.

  • Why is Oscar Wilde on the wall?

Hi jack the prison van before we get to strangeways, and cycle away.

  • johnny's guitar solo at the end: one of the coolest moments in rock n roll

  • you look at the charts now, rubbish.

  • why all the agro guys, im 31 so not there the first time round, but love the smiths, cant get enough of them.

  • nice bit of promotional attire there stephen..

  • song is unreal, far better than modern shite and all these rappers. #propermusic

  • don't give a fuck about morrisey as a person, but i DO give a fuck about his musical talent.

  • there is an Albet Finney bar?

  • the intro makes me think of joy division

  • The 1980's is soooooo underrated when it comes to music. There were so many different types of music to listen to during that time, it was incredible. You may not have liked every genre of music but I have never heard, before or since, a wide variety of music like the 80's. I loved metal, pop, indie, alternative, etc. Good bands ranged from Sabbath to Human League, The Smiths, ZZ Top, REM, Rush, B52's, Depeche Mode..... it was an amazing decade for music and VERY under-appreciated.

  • @MrIce2290 Are you actually serious? How can a whole decade of music be underrated? It just doesn't make sense...

  • @TheEloeo Why doesn't it make sense?

Not all genres can be labelled as underrated as far as we're looking to 80's music DURING THE 80'S. But looking from our 2011 soon to be 2012 point of view, there could even be two complete decades that are underrated.

And I mean, they kind of are underrated aren't they?

They yet, haven't got the glow that the 60's and the 70's had.

And still, @MrIce2290 is right, there was a lot of variety in those days.

But it seems that only a couple of songs survived.

  • @MrIce2290 It was a pretty shitty decade for music amongst the mainstream songs. Every decade has good music (except the current one) and usually those songs are somewhat mainstream. But, the mainstream music of the 80s was shit (other than the smiths).

  • i was there on saturday

  • I still havent seen the end of the "Great Football Experiment" ad , maybe im just not interested.

  • It is lovely seeing places that i am so accustomed to seeing as they looked 20 odd years. No one will ever match Morrisse,y his voice, his lyrics, or just plain him. xx

  • Too much England.

    Too much Thatcher.

  • awwww Morrissey's sooo cute

  • how dare anyone ever cover this song, amazing band amazing music

  • @babyboosabz Get over it. Covers are tributes.

  • ABSOLUTE TUNE

  • The Smiths and U2 - masters in making ridiculously long song titles

  • Shelagh Delaney RIP

  • I used to dislike them, but as I became a better guitarist I really started to be in awe of Johnny Marr. Now I love them!

  • the original hipsters.

  • Is it bad that I know all the words to this.............and every single other Smiths song???

  • @colinsmylie1 why on earth would that be a bad thing.....?

  • buncha fags

  • @NippleOfNippon But sir that's the best thing about it. Morrisseys voice- quite queer. Oscar Wilde- so queer (incase you didn't know Wilde was put in prison for having a gay affair, Morrissey loved him). If your not down with the fags...stop clicking on The Smiths beautiful videos. Moz would despise you xxxxx

  • I HAVE heard it before, but I don't mind...

  • Morrisey is the icon of 80's indie. I love him, and certainly I love his hair.

  • It has been said that music and art reflect what is truly happening inside of a society at that time. The 80's have been romanticized by many, but were a dark and gloomy time frame. The retaking of control by the upper classes and the governments...the 60's were indeed over. The Smiths reflected that perfectly in the chord progressions, lyrics and vocals...I smile when I hear them, but mostly because of how good they were, not because it reminds me of a better time.

  • @Proteus311 You make some good points but sadly every era is romanticised to death. It always makes me laugh when younger lads and lasses comment on bands like The Smiths and say they wished they were around at the time, well I was around at that time and it wasn't much fun, you took solace in your friends and the few good bands around at the time. Even the 60's which although a better time to live in, musically for every Beatles and Stones you had a Herman's Hermits and The Bachelors

  • @jwood36 Hahaha...I thought about that when I typed the part about the 60's...it wasn't all that good socially either, what with Vietnam and the cold war. Ah well, that's why we try to enjoy the music, the people and the experiences for what they are, not necessarily when they happened.

  • That Elvis Denis Jacket is the tits!!

  • What made Morrissey change his mind about making a video? I've seen interviews of him saying videos do not belong in The Smiths and they would never make them because it detracts people from the music...

  • I cant stop playing this!

  • @ Everyone thanks :) just makes me sad to see my fav band hijacked by assholes. And I know it's not really a class war thing but poorer people tend to connect more with the band and Morrissey in particular ie Morrissey's huge hispanic fanbase.

  • What a great song this is. That ringing deep Marr guitar in the background, gives this song so much sincerity. Such a late night song, driving late though the city, in another world...

  • Can't stop listening to The Smiths. Top, top band.

  • It's funny, the hair cuts and lens-less glasses are back in vogue with the youth of today!

  • People who see wayfarers and assume hipster can fuck off. 1987 you flogs. People copy what was previously called unique. Not sure why I'm typing this because if someone hears this song and all they can do is rant about a type of person that didn't exist when the song was written is obviously a lost cause.

  • this song to me was always about a stereotypical douche whos a complete tool to his girl and then bs' his way out of it. Stop me if you think youve heard this one before

  • I can't.. i don't... i don't know if i can. fuck. why are you so beautiful?

  • indeed, Morrissey is NO Hipster! i've been a fan since 1984 (and i am not a hipster either..i'm poor as SHIT..lol). Morrissey, Smiths, Marr, etc, all of anything to do with them..they, they are all originals :-)...and i always loved this video.. running down hallways, got a jock chasing me down.. oh no, it's you.. fell pinned down push hush shhhhhhhhhhhhhhxxxxxxxxxxx

  • hope I'm not the only black person that likes this song.

  • morrissey. you are one sexy, sexy man

  • i'm so tired of the youthful generation. i just wish to listen to music equally without words like hipster or "indie" labels. i just want to enjoy music because i actually enjoy it.

  • Nothing's changed, I still love youuuu, oh I still love you

  • People can say all they want about The Smiths but it will never change the fact that they were one of the most influential bands in the 80's, and in many ways they still are. There's a reason why people still listen to them. Plus, they're my favorite band of all time and I absolutely love them.

  • @damage1978 of course but not like the cure

The cure was the best in the 80s and 70s

  • @damage1978 Yeah they still are one of the most influential bands of the 80's :/

  • @damage1978 You are too young to see what it was as the discs were releasesd. Your bullhit "one of the most". What does that mean? Influnetial? A fashionable word? I listen to them now, because then it was the fucking world. In a area full of cunts and casuals. If you ever see my Smiths collection you will see.

  • A close friend recommended I check these out. He is such an awesome friend! Thanks, @RufioDallas! I'm loving the smiths at the moment!

  • to be frank, I just fucking love this song...

  • don't hate me-i never heard this song before (or the smiths) but i like it. reminds me of Tears For Fears

  • @musicmusing I HATE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @AdmiralBoom76 but i know more about music than you EVER will

  • to the center of the city at night ...waiting for you............ hipsters my ass....i ll stop you ....i ve heard this one before...

  • This song gives me chills right at the 3:00 mark everytime.

  • raping the replay button

  • @joequa23 go to the w w w , youtube , com up there and change the youtube to yourepeat :D

  • Morrisseys voice can fix any problem

  • always love / hate The Moz but i'll never be part of those 45 dipshits.

  • OK, the thought of anyone disliking this song is odd in and of itself but HOLY SHIT, How the fuck do you find your way to the Smiths and then this particular tune to dislike it. All 45 of you should rot, the only taste you might have is in your mouth.

  • this is what Melbourne looks like today

  • stupid fucking bullshit discussions about hipsters, just enjoy the music, idiots

  • gosh whats with everyone posting such negative comments on youtube videos?? just enjoy the wonderful music!

  • @Adroitism Don't be mad bro. You can't blame folk for calling these dweebs Hipsters they do look remarkably similar. Did people really look like that back in the 80's or was this something only seen in the north of ENGLAND ?

Now i was around 14 when this song came out, and i do not remember it at all or any of the smiths work, i guess i was one of the lucky kids

when you randomly hop around on youtube sometimes you win sometimes you loose

    peace :)

  • wish this was included on Disc 1 of The Sound of the Smiths... so much better than Sheila Take a Bow.

  • Handsome, so handsome.

  • I don't think anyone was hip in the '80s, certainly not these guys. "Hip" in '80s fashion would be Duran Duran or Wham or else The Cure or U2. Compared to the emerging but far from mainstream house, metal and hip-hop, these guys were the pinnacle of plainness.

Nevertheless, I pity the generations which had to go through puberty without The Smiths.
