Class song, I followed The Smiths all over in the 80s! Greatest times of my life! have any of you come across a band or duo earlier named 'Silent Thinkers' I'm not sure? You can search them in youtube. The singers voice reminds me of Morrissssey sooo much, worth a look for any fans of The Smiths!
I looked just like this in 1987, but i'm American and from Texas so i was REALLY a fucking outsider, even much so than I think these lads would have been at the time in Manchester, UK. I was going to school up in Austin, TX and The Smiths were huge among a small group of us fanatics for them and New Order, The Cure, Depeche Mode, etc. We were misfits at the time and not on purpose, but now I would say that whole look and genre is tired and there are more "misfits" looking strange than are Preps.
Johnny Marr.... one of the top 5 guitarists post Hendrix... believe it my young friends or just accept it begrudgingly... and the smiths were about songs not guitar heroics
@j9lili well said.... he (Morrisey) does get to be a bit much... but Marr is always there with something fresh and interesting (ex. This Charming Man) such an underrated player!!
Really? Not for his amazing voice/lyrics? Don't get me wrong, Marr is, I believe, one of the greatest guitar players of all time, but personally I think Morrissey is THE greatest lyricist of all time, hands down. I listen to The Smiths for both, really, but when it boils down to it, it comes down to Morrissey for me, then Marr. But to each their own.
@uneedtherapy42 yep i remember he was in the cover of jan 1990 issue of guitar player magazine and it was a bit controversial cuz that was still the heavy/hair metal era (and of course malmsteen, satriani, vai, johnson, etc) and everyone's saying he doesn't belong there (in the mag) esp in the cover
@GreenDookieDay If you say so...can you honestly look at this video and say that with a straight face? Now compare England to the big apple...with it's shiny lights...the "city that never sleeps" is beautiful...not only New York City, but New York as a whole...there are places in upstate NY (like the Adirodack mountains, Potsdam, Orange County, Sullivan county, etc) that would put dreary ole' depressing England to shame.
@GreenDookieDay My grandmother lives in manchester, England...and I refuse to visit her because it's always so damn rainy and foggy over there. Why take time off of work to go on vacation at such a depressing place. I need sunshine baby!
@kapplejacks22 yes but England has culture, where sadly your country does not. I'd rather live in England and have it rain ever day then live in a country without free health care, legalised ownership of guns and lacking any real decent exports culturally.
better than america, have fun with all the hurricanes, wildfires, guncrime, shit healthcare, obesity, shit music and general hatred from the rest of the world. so fuck you!!!
@daniel7319 Make sure you have an umbrella next time you go outside because it will be raining as usual LOL....Ha it's probably raining right now. Get mad all you want...it's not my fault you don't get enough Vitamin D from a lack of sunshine...and have low Serotonin levels, which causes depression. Your mad and depressed Oh my. LOL
@kapplejacks22 well if weather is our biggest problem then im fairly happy to be living here. you americans have much bigger issues to deal with than rain, as you said all i need is an umbrella you're gunna need a shit load more than that to solve all the fucked up things that are wrong with america.
@776danzig Ah... but Morrissey and The Smiths gave us Americans some hope knowing that it was as miserable in England in the 80's as it was here in the U.S.! He was a beacon of style, poetic genius and brash exhibitionism that was needed to counter the "Pop" shit music/style that was current (and STILL Is today!) at the time!
I remember the first time I saw this video. I was in 8th grade and stayed up late to see the premiere of it on 120 minutes on MTV. I'm sure I taped it on our vhs so I could later watch it over and over. I still remember the thrill from seeing all those gorgeous Morrissey-wanna-be's (girls as well as guys!!) It's still a thrill, as well as a flashback to an ealier time in my life, to see it now. Love you, Stephen Patrick Morrissey - for ever.
You gotta love Morrissey's cynical (and self-deprecating) lyrics. ".....and the pain was enough to make a shy, bald buddhist reflect and plan a mass murder....." I played the hell out of my "Strangeways, Here We Come" cassette. Ah, I miss my carefree junior high school days of the mid-80's.

The 1980's is soooooo underrated when it comes to music. There were so many different types of music to listen to during that time, it was incredible. You may not have liked every genre of music but I have never heard, before or since, a wide variety of music like the 80's. I loved metal, pop, indie, alternative, etc. Good bands ranged from Sabbath to Human League, The Smiths, ZZ Top, REM, Rush, B52's, Depeche Mode..... it was an amazing decade for music and VERY under-appreciated.
Not all genres can be labelled as underrated as far as we're looking to 80's music DURING THE 80'S. But looking from our 2011 soon to be 2012 point of view, there could even be two complete decades that are underrated.
And I mean, they kind of are underrated aren't they?
They yet, haven't got the glow that the 60's and the 70's had.
And still, @MrIce2290 is right, there was a lot of variety in those days.
But it seems that only a couple of songs survived.
@MrIce2290 It was a pretty shitty decade for music amongst the mainstream songs. Every decade has good music (except the current one) and usually those songs are somewhat mainstream. But, the mainstream music of the 80s was shit (other than the smiths).
It is lovely seeing places that i am so accustomed to seeing as they looked 20 odd years. No one will ever match Morrisse,y his voice, his lyrics, or just plain him. xx
@NippleOfNippon But sir that's the best thing about it. Morrisseys voice- quite queer. Oscar Wilde- so queer (incase you didn't know Wilde was put in prison for having a gay affair, Morrissey loved him). If your not down with the fags...stop clicking on The Smiths beautiful videos. Moz would despise you xxxxx
It has been said that music and art reflect what is truly happening inside of a society at that time. The 80's have been romanticized by many, but were a dark and gloomy time frame. The retaking of control by the upper classes and the governments...the 60's were indeed over. The Smiths reflected that perfectly in the chord progressions, lyrics and vocals...I smile when I hear them, but mostly because of how good they were, not because it reminds me of a better time.
@Proteus311 You make some good points but sadly every era is romanticised to death. It always makes me laugh when younger lads and lasses comment on bands like The Smiths and say they wished they were around at the time, well I was around at that time and it wasn't much fun, you took solace in your friends and the few good bands around at the time. Even the 60's which although a better time to live in, musically for every Beatles and Stones you had a Herman's Hermits and The Bachelors
@jwood36 Hahaha...I thought about that when I typed the part about the 60's...it wasn't all that good socially either, what with Vietnam and the cold war. Ah well, that's why we try to enjoy the music, the people and the experiences for what they are, not necessarily when they happened.
What made Morrissey change his mind about making a video? I've seen interviews of him saying videos do not belong in The Smiths and they would never make them because it detracts people from the music...
@ Everyone thanks :) just makes me sad to see my fav band hijacked by assholes. And I know it's not really a class war thing but poorer people tend to connect more with the band and Morrissey in particular ie Morrissey's huge hispanic fanbase.
What a great song this is. That ringing deep Marr guitar in the background, gives this song so much sincerity. Such a late night song, driving late though the city, in another world...
People who see wayfarers and assume hipster can fuck off. 1987 you flogs. People copy what was previously called unique. Not sure why I'm typing this because if someone hears this song and all they can do is rant about a type of person that didn't exist when the song was written is obviously a lost cause.
this song to me was always about a stereotypical douche whos a complete tool to his girl and then bs' his way out of it. Stop me if you think youve heard this one before
indeed, Morrissey is NO Hipster! i've been a fan since 1984 (and i am not a hipster either..i'm poor as SHIT..lol). Morrissey, Smiths, Marr, etc, all of anything to do with them..they, they are all originals :-)...and i always loved this video.. running down hallways, got a jock chasing me down.. oh no, it's you.. fell pinned down push hush shhhhhhhhhhhhhhxxxxxxxxxxx
i'm so tired of the youthful generation. i just wish to listen to music equally without words like hipster or "indie" labels. i just want to enjoy music because i actually enjoy it.
People can say all they want about The Smiths but it will never change the fact that they were one of the most influential bands in the 80's, and in many ways they still are. There's a reason why people still listen to them. Plus, they're my favorite band of all time and I absolutely love them.
@damage1978 You are too young to see what it was as the discs were releasesd. Your bullhit "one of the most". What does that mean? Influnetial? A fashionable word? I listen to them now, because then it was the fucking world. In a area full of cunts and casuals. If you ever see my Smiths collection you will see.
OK, the thought of anyone disliking this song is odd in and of itself but HOLY SHIT, How the fuck do you find your way to the Smiths and then this particular tune to dislike it. All 45 of you should rot, the only taste you might have is in your mouth.
@Adroitism Don't be mad bro. You can't blame folk for calling these dweebs Hipsters they do look remarkably similar. Did people really look like that back in the 80's or was this something only seen in the north of ENGLAND ?
Now i was around 14 when this song came out, and i do not remember it at all or any of the smiths work, i guess i was one of the lucky kids
when you randomly hop around on youtube sometimes you win sometimes you loose
I don't think anyone was hip in the '80s, certainly not these guys. "Hip" in '80s fashion would be Duran Duran or Wham or else The Cure or U2. Compared to the emerging but far from mainstream house, metal and hip-hop, these guys were the pinnacle of plainness.
Nevertheless, I pity the generations which had to go through puberty without The Smiths.
fucking strange that everytime the tories are in power this country goes into depression same in the 80s and same as present,,,,

I used to dislike them, but as I became a better guitarist I really started to be in awe of Johnny Marr. Now I love them!

NippleOfNippon 1 month ago
@NippleOfNippon But sir that's the best thing about it. Morrisseys voice- quite queer. Oscar Wilde- so queer (incase you didn't know Wilde was put in prison for having a gay affair, Morrissey loved him). If your not down with the fags...stop clicking on The Smiths beautiful videos. Moz would despise you xxxxx

Morrisey is the icon of 80's indie. I love him, and certainly I love his hair.
MrsParasite 1 month ago
It has been said that music and art reflect what is truly happening inside of a society at that time. The 80's have been romanticized by many, but were a dark and gloomy time frame. The retaking of control by the upper classes and the governments...the 60's were indeed over. The Smiths reflected that perfectly in the chord progressions, lyrics and vocals...I smile when I hear them, but mostly because of how good they were, not because it reminds me of a better time.
Proteus311 1 month ago 3
@Proteus311 You make some good points but sadly every era is romanticised to death. It always makes me laugh when younger lads and lasses comment on bands like The Smiths and say they wished they were around at the time, well I was around at that time and it wasn't much fun, you took solace in your friends and the few good bands around at the time. Even the 60's which although a better time to live in, musically for every Beatles and Stones you had a Herman's Hermits and The Bachelors
jwood36 1 month ago

InferiorPotassium93 1 month ago
this song to me was always about a stereotypical douche whos a complete tool to his girl and then bs' his way out of it. Stop me if you think youve heard this one before

@Adroitism Don't be mad bro. You can't blame folk for calling these dweebs Hipsters they do look remarkably similar. Did people really look like that back in the 80's or was this something only seen in the north of ENGLAND ?
Now i was around 14 when this song came out, and i do not remember it at all or any of the smiths work, i guess i was one of the lucky kids
when you randomly hop around on youtube sometimes you win sometimes you loose
peace :)
