the launch at 4:40 along witt the space footage on br alpha german channel was what got me addicted to space footage, now the ISS streams live space footage for a space fix but this was where it all started lol more than 15 years ago, proper cool vid thanks
i usedto watch this shit over and over SUPERGEEK stylee,, also spacenight, thelog burning channel, the train cam, the taxi cam, the beach cam,,, 90s tv was the fucking dogs bollocks wiiiiccckkedd
There was a channel that had a cartoon picture and a modern jazz music went all day. It was somekind of Astra satellite channel. Does anyone know the music title?
i thought this was epic when i was around 7.it used to play on repeat on the astra channel and i used to watch it over and over. the music at 3:27 would give me shivers
Great memories from analog satellite TV's golden times. After moving out of my parents' house into the big city, I had to deal with crappy cable TV and missed Astra a lot. One year later I moved again into an apartment with a south-facing balcony. The first thing I did was installing a small dish to have Sat-TV again :)
Loved the music from 3:27 to 3:41. Don't know the name of the track though. I was 20 when I saw this in 1996 and would still fascinate me today as I've just seen the whole thing through! Thanks for the memories!
Wow memories! thank you for the upload :) also, bump for the synth music at 0:39 , the version heard on the video and the space ambient synth music on part 2
Well done, but corny, even for 1996. The cheezy electronic music, the style of the script, the graphic modes - it looks like the kind of instructional films I watched in grade school in the 1960's, or now in parody on shows like The Simpsons.
The music frequently reminds me of Russian themes, and another of their promo's gives special attention to the Proton rocket over others, making me wonder if the principle owners or customers aren't based in Russia.
@datachip SES-Astra are based in Luxembourg Europe NOT Russia. SES-Astra used Bikenoor Russia to launch their satellites from that year on, previously they used Kourou French Guyana.
Thanks for the info. The film did note the location of their headquarters, but ownership could still be remote. I wouldn't even know where to look for such information. Their subsequent exclusive use of Bikenoor might support my original supposition, though there are other good reasons I'm sure to use the dependable Proton.
I spent many fascinated hours watching this, when Sky TV was just a baby. We had this diamond shaped satellite dish, satellite TV was the next big thing.
That diamond shaped dish was a Technisat Satennae 47cm, this dish showed poor performance on weaker ASTRA channels and couldn't resolve a good quality sparklie free UK Gold ASTRA 1B signal if it tried! Good in Germany though where signal strength of the ASTRA satellites were at their strongest.
NO you still can pick up european programmes, get yourself kitted out with a motorised satellite dish system with a dish of at least 90cm or more(may need planning permission for over 90cm) and a decent receiver/positioner unit and one or two card reader cams for european subscription packages(if desired and voila! there you have it).
Loved watching this when I was a kid! Always found it fascinating. Anyone know title title of the music used right at the beginning when it shows the Astra flags?
Strangley enough I was just watching the Dr Who at the Proms concert and I heard Prokofiew being played. I instantly thought " I remember this piece of classical music, it used to be played on my brand new Sky Digi box on the Astra channel years ago "
I never thought this promtional video would be on here lol.. Thanks for the memorys to the person who posted this.
PS.. The actuall music is :Prokofiev - Montagues And Capulets
Wot happy memories!! I used to love watching this for hours when I was a kid, but my parents never understood why! It was always fascinating to see how the whole system works. Thanks 4 uploading!
ooh, I remember this. When bored, I used to watch those promos very often, too, and I was thrilled when I discovered that they updated the older 1994 version.
My parents always told me not to mess with the satellite receiver, but I did anyway. On this channel I managed to change the audio frequency for the first time, switching from German to English and back. Brings back a lot of memories, thanks for uploading :)
@ClactonRadio Reason for that is a weak signal;the various transponders on the Astra system at 19.2degE are surprisingly variable in H & V modes also some transponers were slightly more optimized towards the European continent than they are to the UK hence the black and white sparklies. In Northern England from the midlands northwards this problem got even worse;I persuaded my parents in Accrington,Lancashire to get an 80cm Astra dish system and the problem went away and I specified a Nokia too.
sorry for the foul language, but fuck me! i was thinking the same thing, i used to sit and watch this promo over and over again as a kid, and i havent seen this for the past 12 years!!!!lol
Hi Does anyone know the Classical Music Piece that is used 5:23 - 7:40, I've been looking for the name to this for some time, even emailed astra but they are unable to tell me
Can someone please tell me what opera is played from 3:23 to 3:40 because i'm looking for it for like 12 years now ;/ and i dont know the title :( i only knew that i saw it on astra promo once. Please can someone help me ? :(
Oh my god, I haven't seen this in years! First got Sky in 1996 and I remember this more than the programmes, hehe. I think it was broadcast on Astra 1D transponder 57, then later moved to 56.
The transmission was multi-lingual, you could change it to French or German by changing the audio subcarrier.

Wow, what a great flashback!
I used to look at this over and over again at 7 o'clock in the morning, because it was the only station broadcasting interesting stuff... (I was 7)
But as I recall we didn't have the voice-over, just the exciting music.
