If you had one game to win...and could pick from just about any picture, i only go back to the 60s...who would it be...Drysdale???..Warren Spann??.Nolan Ryan?? Tom Seaver???.all great pictures and i know im leaving out a bunch, Sandy Kofax..It would have to be Gibson. he was so dominant, and he even intimadated his own player, ask mc carver...one of the top. 5 greatest pictures ever,
This was the strangest, politically corrupted World Series ever. What was going on behind the scenes fixed the outcome. The '68 riots, Curt Flood & free agency, the Olympics with Tommie Smith and John Carlos, and the secret meeting in a boarded up commissioner's box between Lolich and Frisch. You can infer what you want, but you're naive if you don't think Frisch had a lot to do with teaching Gibson and the blacker Cardinals a lesson. Many have implied this, and that Frisch was a vocal racist.
As great as Gibson was, I can only remember Mickey Lolich winning 3 games in that World Series, Denny McLain won the other one. Notwithstanding Gibson´s performance in the opener was for the ages!!!
@craigp2008a --This was back when NBC would have their main announcer pair up with one of the team's radio announcers--both team's announcers would rotate throughout the Series.
Gibson is an example of why Jack Morris should get in the hall-of-fame. Both had similar win totals in the regular season, but where super human in the Big Games. Gibson - one of the best ever! Get Jack Morris in the Hall!
I followed that 1968 Cardinals team all year, listening to Harry Caray and Jack Buck in Memphis calling the games. Gibby was at his best that day against Detroit and he beat them again in game 4 giving the Cards a 3-1 lead. Then in game seven it was 0-0 in the late innings when Curt Flood misjudged a fly ball which ended up being a triple and gave Tigers the game and the series.
It broke my heart that the Cards lost that series but I'll always have Gibson's remarkable performance in game 1 .
those were the days, notice that 99 percent of the crowd are wearing button up shirts and ties and the women are wearing dresses as opposed to the fat beer drinking slobs you see at ballgames these days wearing t shirts, sleeveless shirts and shorts with tattoos, drinkiing beer, talikng on cell phones, etc.
You could not be more right. There was a time in America, and the world in general, where looking decent was a priority. It said a lot about a person as a human. Now people dress and look like garbage. Something as seemingly inconsequential as what now constitutes taste is in many ways a reflection of society's backwards trend. This may sound like a generalization, but the movement towards subjective tastes, styles, & by extension morality, proceeds from a mostly liberal political ideology.
Wow, excellent. Did the pitchers back then have so much more stamina than modern pitchers? These days a starter goes five innings and is declared "tired."
Have this entire game on DVD. McClain didn't pitch badly in a losing cause, BTW. He pitched 5 innings...but other than that had a game of threes. 3 runs (2 earned), 3 hits, 3 walks, 3 strikeouts.
Great seeing two pitchers of different desposition in the same game. Gibson must of said, "I like your number, Denny".
Gibson would destroy most of these power hitters this day and time. They just go up swinging at anything. Guys like Mark Reynolds and Ryan Howard wouldn't even want to face him.
Gibson was the best " clutch' Pitcher in MLB History! That was a pretty solid Tiger lineup, too. Kaline [ HOF], Cash [ multiple All Star Games] and Willie Horton[ dangerous hitter]; Gibson went through them like a hot knife through butter ! Pure POWER Pitching! Poor Horton thought that last 90 mph slider was going to break his kneecap! Awesome performance...
@kirbycol4 -agree. I never saw a more dominating performance, and against a very good Tiger team--they were so overmatched. Most dominating yr by a pitcher---1:12 ERA. In addition to the large strike zone and higher mound, another reason for the pitchers' dominance back then was that most of the men who attended games wore white shrts, and it made it more difficult on batter to see ball.
Excellent points; Major League players will mention how important a good Hitting background is against a Pitcher. Fenway Park will sometimes open up a small center of the CF Bleachers, during a day Game, and hand out solid Green Shirts for all of the fans to wear that sit in that area! Boy, I don't think anything could have stopped Mr. Gibson on this day; # 45 was " dealing"....
@crossskulled Kinda sorta. Lolich was tremendous, given that McLain didn't hold up his end of the bargain. Gibson pitched two great games but was betrayed in game 7 by Curt Flood's error in center field.

I'd take Bob Gibson as the best big game Pitcher of his era at least post Sandy Koufax and Gibson might be the best Pitcher since Koufax

@dve8692 Good observation. The crowds knew much more about the game and were much more polite to the visiting team then also.
