  • Elliott should have made an album with Paul McCartney. It would had been possible the best album ever made. Imagine the creativity and genius of those two combined together into an album. FUCKK

  • If you enjoy happy/sad music, such as this. Melody that straddles between major and minor key, slight key changes, and secondary dominants then you should check out my music channel. Space is Full Of Demons sounds very much like Elliott Smith.

  • A little less than a happy high

A little less than a suicide

The only things that you really tried...

  • Elliott Smith is easily one of the single greatest singers/songwriters of the last 50 years. It's a shame he left this world so early on, but he music will at least live on always.

Thank you Elliott for all that you did while you were here.

  • this is the saddest Elliott Smith song to me, possibly the saddest song ive ever heard...but also one of my favorite songs ever:)

  • 10 minutes ago i met a guy through chatroulette and after we talked about our music taste he told me i should search this song and hear it

I owe that dude on chatroulette my life, because i am in love with Elliot Smith

  • I see you're leaving me

and taking up with the enemy

The cold comfort of the in-between

A little less than a human being

  • Nothing compares for me. It's funny what I used to think was good music I can hardly remember anymore.

  • I wish more people would talk about the music itself. I understand the emotions involved. I truely understand how he touched people with his music. So, lets talk about the music. I wonder how he acheived that guitar sound in "A Fond Farewell". Surprisingly, yet not, Guitar World magazine has never transcribed a single song of Elliott Smiths that I know of. Guitar World isn't what it once was anyway. The song I'd really like to see broken down in an Orchestral transciption is "Can't Make a Sound"

  • @DjangosBurntFingers Guitar techniques ran a feature on his guitar syle a couple of years ago. I'm pretty tidy on the guitar, but have found his quasi travis basslines challenging. He was a really challenging guitar player.

  • This is one of the most beautiful. And yet, depressing. Songs that i have ever heard.

  • his music keeps the demons at bay

  • You need to careful about letting Elliott Smith too far into your mind. As he once said .

  • @DjangosBurntFingers You are very musically correct! Everyone does need to keep that in thier minds. I fully agree with your comment! Rock on!

  • once I get the money for a nice white leather strap, Im going to make the coolest figure 8 stripes on it.

  • Ironic thing? This was his life.

  • RIP, your music lives on forever, every time someone plays one of your beautiful songs

  • @alexhumphrey1 I feel the same. Winter comes around and subconciously im putting elliott back on my playlists

  • ROSE DEACON I KNOW YOUR LISTENING

  • I wish he knew how many people he impacted RIP

  • @bmxbiker19892 Yes, too bad it really surfaced after his passing. He was down to earth & modest,no matter what the number of fans he had or has, you know he would still remain the same Elliott Smith he always was and is! The ultimate bomb in the singing/songwriting world! RIP Mr. Smitth, we'll all meet up someday........

  • Winter is here again and I can't stop listening to Elliott. This always happens, and I'm ok with it. Portland misses you, brother. Sometimes you are the best friend I could ask for.

  • This man and his music mean absolutely everything to me. I never knew beauty and power until I discovered the writings of Elliott Smith. Emotionally, he's the only thing that's ever lifted me and pushed me down at the same time. Physically, I have a whole sleeve of the Figure 8 stripes down my left arm and halfway across my chest. Why?

How can one communicate with the masses so well, even after one has passed? Very few in history have achieved such a feat, even if they hardly knew it...

  • @BonfireOfTheManatees Oh my god, you have such a beautiful way of expressing yourself with the english language! Wow, this remark is so poetically correct. Kudos to you and your talent of verbal expression! Maybe you should be a songwriter as well, ya? Food for thought,

I complement you and comend you for your wonderful remark for Elliott. ! You rock!

  • "And I can deal with some psychic pain..."

  • 2003 was a bad year for music.

  • Eliot Smith would tell most of us to fuck off.He didnt want to be another drone .

  • "A little less than a happy high, a little less than a suicide, the only things that you really tried."

  • Another year, more tears. RIP Elliott. It's hard to believe so much beauty could come from one person.

  • You've saved my life so many times, brother. It's so sad you couldn't save your own.

  • @StephAteYourEars God, you couldn't hit home harder for me. Elliott seriously saved me from getting the best of myself. The music evokes all the feelings of why I kept holding on. Rest in peace.

  • I'm never gonna know you now, but I'm gonna love you anyhow.

I love you so much, Elliott.

  • I'm trying very hard to be drunk enough not to hurt so much on this shitty anniversary. Nobody'll ever come close to filling the void you left, Stephen Paul Smith. I hope you're at peace now.

  • I'm so happy I found this song. <3

To bad the person who showed it to me is a bitch.

  • :( why’d he have to die???

  • my brother is leaving today, i wont see him for five years, this is on repeat ! :')

  • SO FUCKING PISSED HES FUCKING DEAD WHAT FUCK......so sad..

  • @pentdad. She wants her cake but to eat it too. I don't do that. She still loves me and I her but it didn't work out..

  • @Kylebristow - Jesus this story is earily familiar to one that ended for me last year.

  • @Kylebristow know just where you are, brother. just did basically the same thing. sucks, but thats life. we all walk in darkness, we all walk alone; it's scary to face that dark when you've had someone to reach out and hold to make it seem less alone. good luck.

  • @pentdad. She wanted a break like to be by herself and she said she wanted me back she wanted to "learn to be independent" and I said it was over..I suppose it was pity sex to a point. It acually made me feel a lot better but it fucked with her a lot. Not sure what you meen by family guy..have't watched that show in years if I can avoid it.

  • I'm about to make love to my girlfriend of three years for the last time. We broke up a week ago and I still am in love with her. It didnt work out and she will be gone after this. This song spoke to me. I don't care if what he actually wrote about, that's what it means to me

  • @Kylebristow that was covered in family guy, like goodbye pity sex... Whos leaving who?

  • its art.its subjective.it means whatever it evokes within u.

stop ruining the beauty by picking it apart.there is no right or wrong.

it is a moment, a pure sensation to elevate us from the limits of the reality we may be experiencing.

i reiterate as i swallow my own medicine---shut up and appreciate the moment.

  • @princessbbgrl

"there is no right or wrong." - then stop telling people that they're wrong for trying to discuss what the artist may or may not have been expressing, it's perfectly fine for people to want to gain insight into what Elliott was going through and writing about at the time and that knowledge may well enhance their experience of this work of art.

  • it's not just about heroin addiction. it's much deeper than that. eliot has a talent that a lot of people can't actually hear

  • id give him a medal

  • Comment removed

  • This song is about heroin addiction. Burning pitch on a shiny sheet is freebasing black tar off aluminum foil.

  • @SyrannosaurussTumo Is it all about heroin addiction? =O

  • @StrangeDoctorStrange It's a beautiful song, but most of it is unfortunately. "Pitch burning on a shining sheet(freebasing). Veins full of dissappearing ink(heroin), vomiting in the kitchen sink(opiates make you throw up), disconnecting from the missing link, this is not my life..."

  • This song has gotten me through some rough times, and still does to this day. Deff a good song to have <X3

  • Elliott smith and conor oberst are the only musicians whose music actually sparks up feelings inside of me through their brilliantly chosen lyrics and amazing music :)

  • THANK YOU JANGO!!!

  • Beautiful, it almost makes me cry!

  • Rather fitting i should happen to watch Royal Tenenbaums today and discover Elliott Smith on his birthday.

  • happy birthday elliott

  • Don't you just live when you hear a song and it seems as if they were singing a page out of your life, Elliot smith is one of my top singer/songwriter/musician

  • It was only after he died - seven years after - that I realised what a genius he was.

  • I can't wait to hear from the 1 jerk who will tell me how terrible it is to write such a thing about such a great talent & how could I even say he seemed mediocre? For god's sake (actually there is no god according to 94% of the US Academy of Science members) - he's dead. I guess some people will write me in jest now but I swear I almost never can write what I feel or semi-joke on Ytube w/o having 1 guy (almost never a woman) write me: "You're an ass". I miss those days so please write.

  • @11xzxzxz

It seems like you're upset that you don't like him and many others do so easily? Have you tried songs like Angeles, Miss Misery, Pitseleh? Those songs I adore. But you might not. And that's no problem. You're not less of a human than Elliott Smith-fans, and we aren't either. It's so wonderful that some people can hate Elliott Smith, and some love him. Human variety gives the world color. But if you state you hate him, please state it as your opinion - not as a some "revelation"?

  • @TheAntiChr1st Completely Wrong about my feelings and intent but I'm hard to read. It's all part of bittersweet mockumentary with YTube. To complicated to go into. Who are some of your other favorite artists?

  • @11xzxzxz

So, you're trolling, though in a sophisticated way. My favorite artists are obviously Elliott Smith, Coldplay, and Interpol. There are tons of other artists in almost every music genre of which I've listened and liked more than 5 songs, but I'm not sure whether any of them deserves to be mentioned here.

  • @TheAntiChr1st wrong again. bye.

  • I couldn't find one good or great song on Ytube by Elliott that was not a cover so I wrote this guy off. I guess I was in part wrong. But I found this song and it is great after lo these many years of not understanding what the fuss was about. Honestly I only thought he did great covers like The Kinks Waterloo Sunset and Big Star's Thirteen. That's right, I couldn't find anything more than decent songs by Elliott.

  • if only Rebecca black had this ratio

  • I can't wait for the next album! Keep it up Elliott!

  • @THEcharginCHUCK i can't decide whether or not you are a troll

  • @THEcharginCHUCK idk if this is a joke(in which case you should go hit yurself with a bat till u pass out) or u just being stupid and not knowing that he been dead for some time

  • Oh, wow.

  • ja i used to call this album, "from the top of the basement, to the top of the hill" all my friends used to correct me, but i never heard them, i still call it like that, thanks elliott

  • You can literally turn anything into a drug reference...

  • The friend he is talking about is himself, like in the third person. And "pitch burning on a shining sheet" is what heroin addicts call "chasing the dragon" its smoking heroin off of tin foil. Could be freebase coke too. I miss you elliott. I miss seeing you.

  • How could a man who so many people loved not love himself? R.I.P to a beautiful and flawed human being.

  • <3

  • thanks for saying bye Elliott.

  • Comment removed

  • I can't watch or listen to anything by Elliott Smith without crying.

  • bitch burnin on a shining sheet.....freebasing cocaine off tin foil??

  • @mykeydrive

I thought he said "pitch," which I would take to be a reference to tar heroin. I could be wrong.

  • hahaha im in 8th grade and the same thing happens with me but it makes all my classmates call me emo:( i dont even like act like i am either its just cause i like to listen to elliott

  • @peacelovemusic2461 haha fuck them!!! .. that's what makes you an individual and them sheep. plus there will always be people with the same musical tastes as you even if it seems like the rest of the world has its head stuck up mtv's ass!

  • @pennyroyaltea89 and the matter of the fact is i get the impression mtv's ass is a much darker place then elliotts mind, and elliotts mind wasnt full of std's either :P

  • @peacelovemusic2461 hahaha i can honestly say i would get more depressed watching about 6 seconds of mtv then i would listening to an entire elliott smith album

  • @peacelovemusic2461 Just ignore those stupid assholes. You can be proud of yourself.

  • @peacelovemusic2461 Damn,I'm gonna be a sophmore and all the kids at my school are tolerable with people who has different taste in music, most of the people I know listen to this,Pink Floyd and other classick rock, metal, punk, rap(legit rap not mainstream shit),and dubstep.

Everyone's taste in music in the school I attend are diverse, there's no elitist.

  • these songs don't quite hold the same weight they did years ago, but this one still gets me..

  • What the hell does lugubrious mean? Why get all four-syllabled about things?

Life is too short to need to go to the dictionary every 10 seconds of reading someone's post. Could you please, please, please be munificent and use easier words?!!!?

  • @mydreamquest - lol, that's what Ben Jonson told that Billy Shakespeare fella :)

  • i love battelfield to, suicide -10

    elliot smith {combat knife}

  • This guy BeLOW me hahaha. Quit hatin on a nigga's hamster and maybe people would like you more

  • This makes me want to cry. Amazing how i can miss someone ive never met.

  • Is this song about him planning his suicide?

  • somehow this guy found his way into my head, down a street i blocked off to a house hidden in a tangle of weeds into the basement that i tore the stairs out of and into a closet i chained shut and drywalled over....then he took what he found and wrote 3 songs, this being the last. Elliott Smith was a very talented and tortured person. He had an outlet that happened to express itself wonderfully but in the end also let him down. I feel I'm unworthy of identifying with him..but I do anyway.....

  • love the melody

  • I love the harmonies he used for this song... I just love this song!

  • Anyone who has ever been caught up in dope can relate to this

  • This is not my life...

  • Whenever I hear this song it's so bittersweet. I will forever miss my friend Chasta. My friend, my rock bottom for the longest time, and I'm still crumbling at the edges without her.

  • me and the rest of my 6th grade class. were talking about some of are faverite song some said bruno mars just the way you are some said e.t katy perry some said eminem love the way you lie i said eliot smith a fond farewell.......

  • @PoodProductions Thats what we need... more people to listen to music because they like it not because its hip and cool. Kudos to you man stand up for what you believe is the best

  • @antifawins sweet! thanks i agree

  • @PoodProductions 6th grade!!?? wow that really gives hope for the future! lol right on good choice in music!!!

  • @pennyroyaltea89 Thanks!! i glad yo her that

  • @PoodProductions haha you are a hipster in the making

  • @PoodProductions Your on the right path my friend. You are obliviously wise beyond your years. I feel sorry for those who fall into the hands of music without meaning.

  • @mayyoudiesmiling got that right

  • @PoodProductions

Nice! Although I am in Ninth, I was listening to him in Sixth. Bad music surrounds me, and I find it sad that I live in a generation that completely lost old good music. Nowadays it is all about marketing the cutest or most shocking pop singer.

  • @PoodProductions I know what you mean. I'm the kid that listenes to the stuff no one else listens to also.

  • @PoodProductions lol congrats, does it make you cooler than the average 6th grader? i think not.

  • @PoodProductions Wow you are way cool and only in the 6th grade? You like the Safety Dance too! Hey I couldn't get your Tom Sawyer videos to play ... what are they about..thanks if you care to write. Fond Farewell.

  • Comment removed

  • @11xzxzxz at my old school i got cast as tom sawyer it was great!! i have always been kind of an outcast and i do love the saftey dance hahha i see you like wilco!! i do to! i used to sing "nothing is never gonna stand in my way" to my family when i was little thanks for writing!! i really enjoy it

  • @PoodProductions Yeah they could have every Mark Twain play with some musical numbers from Wilco and Elliott. Good luck in your acting career just don't get typecast as the outcast. Outcasts are ahead of "normals" anyway - but I'm biased. Be well.

  • @PoodProductions hell yea. that makes me happy lol never stray from this kind of music!

  • @PoodProductions you're awesome

  • @PoodProductions seems to me like you have good taste in music.

  • @PoodProductions good to see you know good music and at such a young age.

  • @PoodProductions what do you want, a medal?

  • @Billycaravan no man i wass sharing my Experience with people who mabye would appreciate it........

  • @PoodProductions

Funny enough, I also played the part of Tom Sawyer in a musical theatre performance. I was in Grade 5 at the time. Great way to get introduced to someone who is today one of my favourite writers.

I hope you get into the right crowd of peers and mentors, particularly in high school, and that you have the best of luck. You seem like a great kid.

  • @PoodProductions bravo

  • @PoodProductions you rock dude!

  • @PoodProductions

I was listening to shite in Grade 6. Good to see you're finding this stuff early. Don't care what you're classmates think.

Speaking of your classmates, I wonder how they reacted to that.

  • @BloggerMusicMan trust me i dont care what other people think.... my class mates looked at me like i was crazy!!! thannks for the advice!!

  • Who the fuck disliked this???

Whats wrong with you people =(

  • Elliot Smith breeeeeaaaaks my heart.

  • @arcademod You've told good things , but I think that nobody really know who are we and what we think . Maybe a man could be your "friend" but in his heart he know that he only search friends because wants to empty his feelings , and if he find someone who can listen his emotions better than you he immediately turn his shoulders to you . So , trust me , the only real friend we have is ourself . Maybe you could find someone who can listen you , but nobody can be with you like yourself .

  • most gifted lyricist of my lifetime.

  • I think Elliott changed my perspective about life ; now I know that there aren't good man or women , everyone think only about himself . Elliott helped me to know that in your life you can only count on yourself ... Thank you !

  • FIGURE8 <3

  • best sad song ever?

  • i would kill for an itunes card now

  • I saw him when i was 4 in san francisco in amoeba music store and this was my favorite song till i was like nine then i started listen to diiferent stuff and now i nitoce how awesome he was great guy i wish i could watch hiim again

  • farewell cruel life said the Hamster .Im going screaming lol

  • i want this played at my funeral. when ever that may be. @>---- elliott

  • just great

  • I miss them so much when I hear this song.

  • omg @colintesla THAT IS THE FUNNIEST THING I HAVE EVER HEARD. i love you. youve made my life.

  • :'(... "a little less than a happy high, a little less than a suicide, the only things that you really tried. " RIP

  • Found this because of "Best of the Left"

  • @gmr911 Same. Jay's taste in music is excellent

  • i see you're leaving me.

and taking off with the enemy.

  • I always thought the lyrics were...

"It's just a farm fell onto a friend"

Always reminded me of the Wizard of Oz when the house falls on the bad witch :)

  • ayayayayayayayay very hot

  • how on EARTH could anyone dislike this?!!!!?!??!

  • Elliott Smith saved my life. It's just sad that he couldn't save his own.

  • @elliottsavedmylife May I ask how sad music saved your life? I'd like mine to be saved too! And kudos! you deserve the best.

  • @alternative10000 Well, Elliott Smith proved to me that there is such a thing as lugubrious beauty. His music has many layers to it. If you dig really deep with it, they is almost always a glimmer of hope. He even said once that the song "Everything means nothing to me" was something positive. His music is so brutally honest and spoke to me in ways that other music never did. It made me feel like I wasn't alone for having the most human feelings...for feeling pain, and finding beauty in it.

  • @elliottsavedmylife Well said. There is always joy inherent in pain.

  • @elliottsavedmylife

    Beautifully put.

  • @elliottsavedmylife I have sometimes wondered why I feel so much like Elliott Smith is speaking directly to me through his music, and you found the words for it in that last sentence. It makes me "feel like I wasn't alone for... feeling pain, and finding beauty in it."

  • @elliottsavedmylife no he didn't

  • @elliottsavedmylife Oh how this is true, what an odd statement to read... but how true it is for myself as well. "The only maker that you want to meet"

  • @elliottsavedmylife this is true for myself as well, "the only maker you want to meet" oh how true elliott, how true.

  • @elliottsavedmylife He was murdered. Read the story if you haven't. Very weird and mysterious circumstances concerning his death. I don't think he killed himself, I think someone who was in danger of going broke killed him to keep their wealth that was tied to him.

  • Comment removed

  • @evelyn112101 I can't disagree with you but something apparently supernatural had happened since he stabbed himself TWICE in the chest. How could he pull the knife out and do it again? The corner didn't think it was likely and it called foul play then suicide. However you slice it (no pun intended, ok maybe LOL), it definitely was not the typical suicide. For someone who was in a such pain demonstrated super natural strength in suicide. RIP Elliot, wish you were here!

  • Comment removed

  • everything is ok

  • god this song makes me seriously depressed... but unfortunately when i feel depressed its the only thing i want to listen to. now i just wanna get drunk lol nothing like drowning ur sorrows with a bit of elliott smith!!

  • @issiiih Dude..... I know EXACTLY what you mean.... Elliott Smith is perfect for a bittersweet mood and some bourbon....or a nice J if your superego permits that sort of thing

  • My girlfriend went to italy and never came back. I listened to this song .. a lot.

  • The man that introduced me to Elliott Smith years ago, both his music, and him in person, passed away a few weeks ago.. Now I'm listening to this, trying not to think about it, when this song is about the EXACT thing that killed him.. I was once the skinny Santa.. Is that irony? Or me trying to follow him? Guess I'll find out. Listen close and learn folks..

  • Great video. For fans of Acoustic Music check out SION RUSSELL JONES who just released his debut album 'And Suddenly...' on Still Small Voice records. Those of you who are on Spotify can also listen to the album free of charge. Enjoy x

  • 7 people are straight up faggots

  • Is it bad that I feel this song explains my life? ...

  • 7 people are beiber fans
