I saw the American tour earlier this month and this song brought me to tears. Such a beautiful show and WHAT A PRODUCTION!

He's always dropping off the ends of his phrases... he's also rather inconsistent with his vowels; e.g., "can't" sounded like an average American would say it, while "last" sounded like "lost".

I'm a little spoiled since I listen to the OLC recording (Michael Ball) but Gareth just doesn't do this song justice.

I watched Gareth play Marius at the Bristol Hippodrome last week and to be honest, i wasnt expecting much from him but he was brilliant!!

I just saw them in Paris, on their last day there, it seems he has improved a lot, and this song will stay my favorite, it was so moving!! The whole cast was so amazing! It was really magical and moved me to tears!

I saw that Nick Jonas is going to sing at the O2 and I wondered if any of you had heard him sing already (that role)?

@bllllllllllbbb Okay, I've heard that kid live and I have to say he has A LOT of work to do before I'll support that. Yeah sure, he's got the ability and yes he has potential but all three of them were flat durring their new years performance, although I think he's the best out of the three so maybe he'll be able to live up to Michael Ball and Gareth Gates (he's awesome to say the least, I'm just a little biased about tenors for this part)...

@Phoenixfreak87 You definitely need to go see the show and listen to Gareth singing this now. He's improved considerably since this recording, although I thought this was brilliant anyway you can't really get an impression of the emotion Gareth puts into the sing unless you're there.. He's getting better all the time.

I seriously think that an audio clip isn't doing this justice. From what everyone is saying he gives a lot of emotion to his performance and really gets into character. But that falls flat in my mind because he sounds...so immature for the part of Marius, especially compared to the original recording with Michael. It's a good performance, but nothing spectacular. But like I said before perhaps I actually need to see the performance before I should judge.

im goin to see it at edinburgh and i was really worried the gareth gates would be rubish, but he sounds pretty good :) not as good as michael ball did for the 10th anniversary but oh well :P

@xLauraxCullenx Don't forget that this clip was from opening night, and Michael had been singing the part for years by the time the 10th anniversary concert came around. :-)

@Snowdrop2 Maybe, but Michael were still amazing back when he first played Marius - way better than Gareth. Just listen to the original London cast recording. And he's just gotten better since.

@06s091 I think you'll find it was Laura who was comp[aring an opening night amateur, covert, recording with the 10th Anniversary version, which was what I replied to. I have heard all the versions, thank you and I agree Michael Ball is very good, but I don't agree he was "way better" and it was a different type of recording anyway. Michael isn't going to be threatened by people enthusing about someone else being good too, so no need to be so dismissive of those who enjoy another version.

Yes, of course it's true. The recording was due to be made in Manchester so it may already have been done as Les Mis is in Manchester for only one more week. The CD is due to be released around Easter.
