  • Training, resources and the ability to parent. Excellent point.

  • I'd like to see some adevertisements ask "What can you do?" Foster parents need to recognize their own strengths and weaknesses and accept placements that they can do and refuse ones that they don't. And DCF needs to respect those boundaries and not be calling us about kids they know would be best served in a different type of family. Also I think "What can you do?" can bring other people to the table who can't foster, but can support foster kids and families in other ways.

  • Since this video, my local DCFS does not ask the question about skills but developed a policy for social workers to consider a foster parent's ability. That is a good thing and good enough for me. Just being a foster parent is not good enough...there must be skills to match the required level of care especially for teens. Working with teens is in itself a speciality and expensive!
