Yeah, Martin Kelly is playing at CB for U-21's because he played there in the Liverpool reserves. That is his natural position but it is much easier for someone to be placed as a Full back when they are upcoming players - just like Jamie Carragher was.

if fergie was in charge of England, he'd chose smalling. If dalglish was in charge he'd chose kelly. The positive thing here is that england finally have very good, YOUTHFUL competition for defensive positions. I'm a liverpool fan but would have no problem seeing either smalling or kelly break through, both are bloody good players!

Jones and Smalling are the future England centre back pairing. Walker is hugely overrated and, like Glen Johnson, is a hell of a lot better going forward. Richards is a decent player when he wants to be but he's got that irritating Kieron Dyer-esque ego and plays in a team that makes him look better than he actually is. Martin Kelly is a class-act and I'd start him 100% over Glen Johnson for Liverpool.

@WellRed1000 Maybe over Glenn Johnson, but he's 5th in my pecking order. When Smalling and Jones are playing in the middle, Walker should be the right back. He's just a better player at the moment. He's a game-changer. England's best player in the u21s finals

Dont put too much pressure on him, but what a player he can come, since Stevie G came from the youth policy. Kellys strong, pace, tall, versatile n in his early 20s. I always say that, we should fight guys, someone should try and put johnson on the right wing, why they dont try it for pre-season or something. He will be class there. Fans know, why dont Kenny & co knows. Not rocket science, do you agree?

@badboimatt675 No ... he's rated because he is an incredible athlete with great positional sense, superb aerial ability and versitility. He can play comfortably at right back or centre back and has the silk to go with it. Much like Rio. Kelly isn't even close if we are being honest here. I'm not saying that as a United fan either, it's just the facts mate. Like how Messi is superior to Rooney. Just take it on the chin eh?

He's nothing other then average and that is showed by how badly he's playing for a united team that is poor defensively... The boys got nothing on Rio, the only similarity is that they're both mixed race. Chris Smalling is not a top class player, he's Utd's new wes Brown and anyone that thinks otherwise is either completely deluded or is a united fan. Nobody who doesn't support united rates Smalling.

@Temposama but if it makes you feel better ... Smalling wins everything in the air, bombs up and down the flank when playing at right back ... are these not the characteristics of a man with passion? He also has an eye for goal too, he has that typical Manchester United mentality drilled into him from Sir Alex Ferguson. Sir Alex wouldnt dream of fielding a player without passion anyhow. His teams have demonstrated that for over 25 years now I believe.

But he lacks passion, Martin kelly has everything smalling has but he also has passion and determination... I guarantee Martin kelly will be the future right back of england.
