  • did I really watch this back then? lol

  • was Wordy a nonce?

  • It's Frankie Barrow !!!!! (watch Steptoe & Son Ride Again)

  • Wordy changed appearance over the years; I remember the letters all over him weren't as dark as that. I grew up in the 80s though so it was probably a different Wordy puppet they used by then.

  • Wordy was fine, but his lesser known brothers "pissy" & "fucky" were nightmares... always popping up mid-coitus, pissy with his nappy full of stinking glegage and fucky humping my leg all the time... dirty letter headed fucknut!

  • They need to bring school television back! I remeber watching how we used to live at school and at home you and me,stop look and listenand who me!

  • Wordy had a second job as a huge orange knobbly dildo.

  • I watched this at school in the early 80s and okay, nothing amazing now, but for the times, made school lessons far more tolerable. Wordy-actor never insulted my intelligence as a child but bored me to bits with the E letter and felt nauseous with all that mid-air bobbing stuff. Actually reminded me of a Tangoed granny with huge curlers and a gender identity issues.

  • that surprises me, I remember him talking about E more than H, he did seem a little obsessed though

  • what a cunt

  • 32 people like tim!

  • Wow there must have been a lot of crack being shoved up noses at the beeb back in the 80s.

  • Look and Read, not Words and Pictures. :-)

  • So, a floating orangey head thing suddenly appears in the room and he's just like... "Who are you? Where did you spring from?".

Me, I'd have a notably large underpants malfunction and run away.

  • Holy crap, its Petr Cech!!

  • Do you recall that excruciatingly bad infant school teacher George Bush was sat with on 9-11? How much better was Wordy! I had forgot all about him!

  • sing along to the theme.

A is the sound of an angry dragon.

    or a bankok blow job

C is the place where you put your hard dick.

D is the choice of the length of my massive member.

  • that was a trip down memory lane. I used to love watching this. Thanks

  • fuck that was some trip what was that guy on

  • that IS wordy but this is look and read. ( a very early one ) charlie was on words and pictures,a cartoon like man in the 80's followed by nutmeg the cat in the early nineties.

  • @suzybear1955 I saw Charlie in Chester when I was a kid and was dead excited lol

  • Did anyone notice that the letters closest up to the camera in the last shot of Wordy spell.... "P O B" ?!?!

  • Completely obvious to me that Wordy went on to be Henry Hoover!

  • oh my god this really takes me back

  • another 1 i remember from my days as a pre teen.

    fucking quality stuff.

  • if he popped out of my keyboard i'd shit my pants

  • tim - tit

  • You can tell that he secretly hates wordy and just wishes he would fuck off

  • anti-virus will sort him out, should use AVG

  • ludvig would kick wordy ass any day of the fucking week. wankers.

  • What the fuck has he been smoking?

  • Is that Petr Cech?

  • I wonder why the word processor and computer keyboard kept the awkward typewriter format. Shows how inert everyone is. Typewriters were so frustrating and inefficient.

  • classic

  • I had no idea Wordy had a full name and was Mr Watchword. This must be one of Wordy's very first appearances!!

  • OH MY GOD i have just realised what he was supposed to be, i used to wonder why he had a helmet with letters on it....i was only about three years old though!!!

  • he wouldnt have been from that type of typewriter, he would hve been found in an electric one!!!

  • wasnt wordy from look and read? and charlie from words and pictures?.

  • My goodness, it's Cloud Burst and Richard Carpenter! Haven't seen that in 33 years!

  • Comment removed

  • is that Richard Stillgoe?? if it is what the hell happened to him??

  • andrew lloyd webber - thats what did for his mediochre career

  • He made an absolute shed load of money from writing songs. He doesn't have to work any more, believe me.

  • This programme taught me how to spell so many things when I was a kid - they don't make em like they used to!

  • Wordy was last seen performing in a Bradford strip club shortly after Look and Read was cancelled in the late 80's. rumour has it he had by then developed a serious heroin habit and was hooking to pay for it as well as supporting his 3 illegitimate children from affairs with Janet Ellis, Floella Benjamin and Jane from Rod, Jane and Freddy.

It's a tragic yet cautionary tale of how fame can go to someone's head and turn them into a right twat.

  • PMSL!!

  • lol fuckin funny asm8.

  • @AJT041979 That's outrageous behaviour and disgraceful. Thank you for bringing it to our attention. Who would ever have thought he was also Brian in The Archers?

  • @anniemose By that point he'd do anything to pay the rent. Very, very sad.

  • @AJT041979 Shit thats pretty bad lol!!

  • @AJT041979 LOL

  • This isn't "Words And Pictures". This is "Look And Read"!

  • astonishingly, this was on the school curriculum, lazy teachers just plonked people in front of this gash.

  • oh come on, BBC learning programmes were and probably are still brilliant. Just because it's from the 70s and made for kids doesn't mean it's , ahem, 'gash'

  • Yeah, perhaps he should learn the correct use of "gash".

  • QUIM !

  • aristurtle89 wot a brilliant quote...laughin my tits off at it.....brilliant

  • wordy actually passed away about six months ago after a long and painful battle against kidney stones.

  • I should have been stoned to this.

  • I used to love wordy!!! Did he used to be in Look and read about half way through teaching us about spellings. I must admit it was a bit scary at the age of 6-7.

    DA

  • does anyone else think Wordy looks like half a carrot with glued on scrabble tiles!?

  • pretty much

  • brilliant.....im still laughing now hahahahaha

  • The bloke doing Wordy's voice is Charles Collingwood. He is the scoremaster on Noel Edmonds' Telly Addicts programme, as well as Brian Aldridge in The Archers.

  • I remember the Wordy about Peregrine Falcons and people stealing their eggs

  • @ninelivecat SKY HUNTER!! classic.... x

  • Anyone remember the story about the aliens who wrote backwards? With the strange character "The Thin Man"? Freaky as a kid!

  • could anybody remember that there was a mytery called dark towers the words in the titles were" Oh come with me to dark towers" trying to find the clip all i rememberis they found a clue in the coach in the shed of the castle

  • Dunno if this has been asked, but surely WOrdy was on Look & Read?

  • Yup, Wody was from Look and Read.

CHARLIE was the " little man " on W&P

  • Yes! I remember being gripped by the story. Very hazey memory of it....this clip brought me right back though.

  • Can anyone help answer this ancient question? On this program, they ran a story in the middle. One particular story features some menacing chaps in a mercedes chasing a little kid as i recall. anyway, the main thing I need to hear the music from that story again, synthesizers, very kraftwerkm, atmospheric, but it's been 30 years. someone put me out of my misery please? linky?

  • was the story call cloudburst ?

  • It was a story called "The boy from outer space" - I remember this, as I had to sit through it at primary school and do crappy worksheets on it. I was seven years old !!

  • Yeah that's the one! With the Thin Man... freaky!

  • I've still got the book that came with the show, as we watched it in class. I went to Gilthill. Where did you go?

  • OMG!! i remember this!!!

  • Tim contains the letter "i" and sound like "eh", like the "eh" in fenian, tim and fenian meaning the same thing of course

  • Wordy was played by Charles Collingwood, who recalled that years later he was playing a sex scene on telly with a younger woman who had been at school in this era. The scene collapsed in laughter after a few seconds as she said, "I can't believe I'm shagging Wordy!"

He also plays randy farmer Brian Aldridge in "The Archers", a long-running radio soap.

  • 0:27 - "Go on - READ IT!". He says it with such venom.

  • I used to think wordy was a shrunk down Timmy mallet (???) I have no idea why

  • The bearded bloke was Richard Carpenter, this is an excerpt from the Look And Read story 'Cloudburst' from about 1975,it was followed up with another story called Joe And the Sheep Rustlers.

  • wow a wealth of knowledge on this subject, respect! do you have an excerpt from the episode where 2 darkside blokes are after a kid/some kids, very synthy music i would love to hear again...

  • Wow, a keylogger waaaay ahead of its time ;)

  • yeap wordy was deff from look and read i used to watch it at scool evry week

  • Wordy was a sarcastic, somewhat bitter character. One minute you're feeling good from watching a nice story and learning a bit about vocabulary, then the next minute this prickly cretin would appear out of nowhere to spoil the party.

  • excellent...just excellent sir.

  • Doesn't "Wordy's" head look like the protective head gear the Chelsea Keeper Czec wears since his head injury against Reading.

  • this is look and read not words and pictures - easy to confuse the two. this is aimed at older children 7-9yo's ... words and pictures was for 4-6yo's and had magic pencil

  • Yeah I remember that - the wordy from words and pictures was a blue cartoon(ish)kind of thing. And the magic pencil was cool - "up,down and all around"

  • there never was a ''wordy'' in words and pictures there was a cartoony blue thing called charlie in the 70's and 80's. and yeah magic pencil was wicked!. it's easy to get confused tho cos you would think '' wordy'' and associate it with words and pictures. I just know i suppose cos i watctched words and pictures in infants and look and read in juniors lol, plus my love for sophie aldred as a kid meant i watched words and pictures til i was 14 or so,when it's target audience was 4-6yo's, lol!

  • did your teacher make you follow the pen????

  • oh yes! that is my faveourite memory - whole class, sat on the floor = teachers que ''fingers up for magic pencil'' and the whole lot of us would ''write'' the letter in the air with eyes glued to the screen watching how magic pencil wrote the letter of the programme!

  • I remember I watched Words and pictures video in primary school, but it must of been a new version or a repeat cause it was in like 1999/2000. Then in year 1 we watched words and pictures plus, in about 2001.

  • words and pictures plus - with paul ewing (scottish bloke) was aimed at year one children ''words and pictures'' was aimed at reception. words and pictures plus was first aired in sept 2000, so guess it was repeated in 2001 .... sadly now all words and pictures and look and read are not broadcast as billed schools programmes (occasionally repeats on cbbc channel '' class tv '' - tv aint what it was -(. anyone remember sophie aldred doing words and pictures in '92 and '97 - used 2 love her!

  • Is that the girl with short brown hair?

  • that would of been sophie yes! - she was my childhood heroine lol ... she was also in Dr who in the late eighties-)

  • big up the wordy

  • Is that Matthew from Sooty?

  • No,If my memory serves me well his name was Richard Carpenter, although I may be completely wrong, because there was a similar 1970s schools program called Look and Read, with one storyline called Cloudbursting which was a type of thriller serial that taught kids to read and entertained them too,Cloudbursting was followed by another storline called Joe And The Sheep Rustlers which was circa 1975.

  • i used to watch this loads!! remember watchin it in school too *bless*

  • 'Go on READ IT!'

  • I remember a really sweet Halloween edition they did of this prog with the song, "We're Witches of Halloween, oo-oo". Can't find it anywhere

  • I thought(hoped) he was gonna write TITS!!

  • That typewriter would piss me off.

  • lol i used to watch this in primary school

  • i'd forgotten all about wordy, until i saw the first of the new batch of star wars films. Darth Maul appeared and all icould think of was an evil wordy!!

Bunking off school your right do you remember the science programmes on itv narrated by chris tarrant some oof these were priceless.

  • Chris tarrant narrating 'stop, look, listen!' just popped into my head after reading that comment. Am I right?!

  • right indeed - stop look listen = tarrant!

  • reminds me of bunking off school!!i learnt more watching this stuff, hey look i can spell!!!! lol

  • look and read , oh the stories were great, remember ther space boy 1

  • A whole word apart(pun), between now and than.

  • this is look and read . words and pictures in my era 1980-82 had this white little man called charlie if i rember rightly

  • Yes - Charlie was black 'n' white and used to sing along to the letter-writing section ..the up..and around..and down bits?? remember. Great upload! :) Wordy was cool and quirky.

  • Didn't Words and Pictures have a white like ghost thing floating around,or is that somrthing else?I always thought Wordy was on Look and Read.

  • The white ghostlike thing was a cartoon humanoid, about ten inches tall, named Charlie. I even recall he had thinning hair!

  • If memory serves;wasn't there a Tom baker era Dr who parody in every episode?

  • This rings a bell! Didn't it feature a chubby comedy-actor type, who's face was familiar in those days but not any more (a Christopher Biggins type, though not actually Biggins), in a Tom Baker style hat and scarf costume, who used a phone box (not a police box) as his Tardis. I think he mainly spent his time running around parks ... I've been trying to identify what that DW skit was from for years!

  • Possibly the unfortunately-monikered Christopher Lilycrap, who was almost as famous as Derek Griffiths in the early 80s. He was best known for the ITV show "Lets Pretend" but I distinctly remember him doing a Doctor Who skit on one of his CBBC shows. As "Doctor What" he finds (along with his female assistant) that the Tardis is as small on the inside as it is on the outside.

  • Christopher Lillicrap never did 'Let's Pretend'. He was well and truly on the decent by the time that began.

  • Wordy now plays Brian Aldridge in the Archers!

  • Its from Cloud Burst!

  • Interesting! Though this is "Look and Read" not "Words and pictures"
