SNK made both series. They can do whatever they want. Just like how Capcom threw Akuma into an Xmen game.

@acidglow Akuma appearing in X-Men:Children of the Atom seemed more like a non-sensical twofer at the time, but seeing as how that game set the stage for X-Men Vs. Street Fighter, it made more sense in a retroactive light. Mai's appearance in SS makes a little more sense in regards to the character. because she appears in Gen-an Shiranui's ending, this was SNK's attempt to establish a connection between the two, as Gen-an is supposed to be Mai's evil ancestor.

@acidglow also, Hanzo Hattori has a special pre-fight dialogue with her in KOF 2006 which is supposed to bridge some kind of connection between his Iga clan and her Shiranui clan (which Gen-an also belongs to). Further examples of this connection are referred to in interactions between Mai and Nagase and as well and Hanzo and Nagase (as Nagase also uses the Iga style and Hanzo is basically her glorified move clone in KOF 2006)
