He wasn't the first contestant in the 2006 season. Meredith said "You're the first contestant this season from Oregon." Besides, he was on the show in January 2006, which is considered the 2005 season.

I would call these people "legit" stupid cause in these seasons there was no clock so there was no need to rush, in the clock season some people got it wrong because they were pressured by the clock as seen in some losses well Lovi Yu just had to answer as quickly as she can cause of the clock

He jumped too fast on the wrong answer, but this wasn't as bad as other $0 winners. "Stick" shares the first two letters as "Straw". Hopefully this will serve as a wake up call to not be so careless for this guy.

Let's not forget about Chase Sampson the following season, or Lovi Yu from this season (who said that Owls release ink instead of Squid, and when she noticed her mistake, it was too little too late).
