I used to live near a highway. It wasn't actually that loud, especially with the doors and windows closed. There isn't usually any honking or anything. The trucks don't make that loud noise when they engine brake, or whatever it is that they do. You kind of get used to what noise that there is as if it were just the hum of a computer in your bedroom - something that is louder than you would imagine until you turn it off and hear the silence.

No volunteer highway cleanup there? I think most of Iowa's state highways and interstates are cleaned up 2 miles at a time by different volunteer groups. The Jeep club I'm in has 2 miles of a 4-lane state highway, we clean it up every summer. We filled 16 BIG trash bags up the last summer. I was amazed at the amount of beer cans also.

if it were my house on the side of the highway and with all that garbage and crap there i would pick it up. when i take my dog for a walk everyday i look around the ditch and if it starts to get alot of trash buildup i will take out a garbage bag or a few shopping bags and gloves and pick the garbage up. its something easy to do and it makes the roads/ditches look better..

I used to do road side clean up as part of the Adopt-A-Highway program with my Forestry club for our service hours when I was in community college...it is ridiculous and disgusting what some people throw out. It just shows how little respect people have for one another and for the future generations

One of the most common things tossed from automobiles in our area believe it or not is used baby diapers. Seen it happen many times, had one hit the windshield of the truck once. Disgusting.

And just for the record, diaper tossing is pan-racial and pan-economical. I've seen broke ass minorities doing it, as well as well off to do soccer mom's in Volvo's and Cadillacs do it.

The reason that area (Water Gap Tolls) to exit 284 is trashed because the dregs of New York and New Jersey are now living here in the Poconos. Driving a tow truck along that stretch of 80 almost daily, I've seen these "imports" and "out of staters" routinely litter the roadway because they know they won't get caught, Add to them the weekend "Outlet Shoppers" that hop off at 299 in Tannersville, and the highway gets trashed easily.

In Colorado we have "adopt a highway" program where groups or businesses volunteer & clean up every so often. It works fairly well.

Good tip about getting out of your car on the side of the highway. We had a family accident which put a guy in a coma for weeks when getting hit from behind while on the shoulder. Definitely a lot of distracted drivers out there. Damn GM products!
