Perhaps or maybe he was too quick to execute that move that they failed to call a traveling violation against him. The referees for sure got questioned why they didn't blow whistle for that, but it's just that MJ had outsmarted them. He tricked them. We saw it clearly.
@oneman91 Unfortunately, he travels at least half of the time, when he starts dribbling. His pivot foot is almost always off the ground long before the ball leaves his hand for his first dribble.
@degigi2003 absolutely 100% false. jordan was the master of the "jab step," which may look like a travel to the uninitiated. the opposing teams would have been screaming bloody murder if MJ was traveling and getting away with it. it's almost traditional now to comment "he traveled" on MJ vids, but no, he didn't. no, i'm not saying he NEVER traveled, just that he doesn't on most of these highlight clips. it may look like he does because of the jab step. but no, it's not a travel. thanks
@isaachaze1 "In starting a dribble after receiving the ball while standing still, the ball must be out of the player's hand before the pivot foot is raised off the floor." That's the Rule. MJ is my favorite player, I must have watched thousands of hours of his games, but he is breaking that rule almost every time he starts the dribble with his right hand. Unless I am reading the rule wrong, or it is very difficult to see the violation.
Travel or no-travel.... who cares?!! the move is so quick, the referee just blinked and Jordans already gone.... I bet you can't really see it even on sideline if he travels or not.
Good move. Travel and dont forget the push off with left hand!... still quick fast and good move but he paid his dues getting beat up by 80's lakers, knicks, pistons and many other teams.. now present time a flagrant foul 2 .. was a regular foul back then.. so he paid his dues. under paid- but back then it was a matter of PRIDE!!!. now is just chee ching and bling bling!!!
MJ dribble right after he turn right. Its not a traveling, he is just too quick and you are not a professional thats why you fooled by your eyes and call it a traveling.
and by the way MJ push defender's hand checking away, it's totally legal. He didn't grasp or push defender hard, it's not possible to get a call in most of time.
@fifa1688 What are you looking at. When he does his fake to the middle his pivot foot leaves the ground before he spins. You're watching after he spins not the actual spin. You can't lift your pivot foot. A lot of people miss that. That's a travel. Doesn't matter though, everyone in the NBA did it and still do it. They haven't called traveling in 30 years.
@fifa1688 The league rules don't allow it. It's a traveling violation by NBA and FIBA (and every other basketball league) rules. Just because something doesn't get called, doesn't mean there isn't a violation. And just because something does get called, doesn't mean it was a violation. The league calls it traveling but the referees let it go. I understand what you're saying, but this was a travel. Plain, simple, and straightforward.
@jaredross1 Travel in this case is just that when he turns, he moves up the pivot-foot (left foot, originally) and he changes it (you can see it between 2'' and 3'' of the video, you can see the right foot becomes the pivot).
@algotalgo So did i think till D'rose joined the bulls... I donno if u ask me he's faster than MJ, maybe not smarter.. Give him time and he will become a legend like Jordan
@algotalgo that wasn't a travel, it was a pass to jordan, he triple threated, you can move you pivot foot if you hadn't dribbled the ball yet, as u can see he to that step then spunt off, it did seem like a travel but it really wasnt.

Actually if you slow down the video, you'll find MJ didn't travel in this spin move, he is just too quick!
He dribble the ball right after he turn right side, thats not a traveling.

If so, why you call it traveling? If the league allow that, its not traveling. Just like FIFA and NBA have some different rules.

its hard for the ref to see a travel when hes moving so damn fast
snoop11080 2 years ago 4
for sure. that pivot is so hard to see from an angle, but understandably it should've been the focus of at least one ref.

Yes, it's definitely a travel. But no point guard could can or will do in the next 200 years moves like this, so quick and smart.
algotalgo 3 years ago 42
@algotalgo its not a travel he takes one step and then does a "pro hop" its perfectly legal
jaredross1 8 months ago
@jaredross1 Travel in this case is just that when he turns, he moves up the pivot-foot (left foot, originally) and he changes it (you can see it between 2'' and 3'' of the video, you can see the right foot becomes the pivot).
Anyway that's so fast...it's just beauty :)
algotalgo 8 months ago
@algotalgo no sorry, looked that again. The left foot moves up, so legally that is travel. But he doesn't change the pivot foot.
Let's say for a second he flies, while spinning around :)
