A lot of British punk is all style and no substance by American anti-corporate underground standards. It seems to be rooted in Malcolm McClaren seeing New York and thinking all you had to do was dress in S&M clothes. Look at the mainstream poser Billy Idol--no rebellion there, just distraction from the issues--and even John Lydon advertises Guitar Hero now. They sound great, but have no substance. You have to go to Crass or the American hardcore scene in the late 70s-80s for punk substance.
