I know they're not venomous, but will they break skin if they bite? My little dog was barking like crazy last night when I let her out and when I went out to see what she was barking at, a rat snake (maybe 4ft long) made a strike at me as I reached down to pick the dog up. I didn't see it in time to avoid it, but it missed me. Should I keep an extra eye out on the dog? I know the snake is good to have around, so I didn't kill it or even mess with it. Just let it slither away.
Great job on not killing it! No worries at all about your dogs. They will be just fine and the rat snake will choose to run if your dogs start messing with it. He may sit perfectly still as well. If you are bitten, just clean the wound with alcohol and put some antibiotic ointment on it. You will be fine and they do break the skin when they bite. The bites are for the most part painless, but I have had adults bite hard. Thanks for watching :)
Really?? I have had countless numbers of them take to water when I spot them. They are GREAT swimmers and frequent the rivers and ponds where I live. Thanks for the compliments and for checking out the video :)
dude, i had the best herping day of my life!!! i jumped my second gator which was 5 foot 2 inches, i caught two eastern yellow bellid racer under the same tin, a broad banded water snake, and a gulf coast ribbon!!!! im thinking about making a youtube vid about the racers but i wouldnt know wat to say...
haha i havent goten brave enough to actually bring one to school yet, but im gona look in to it! this year i started at corner and i switched out from slot receiver and runningback....wat did you run your forty in..
That sucks that they were upset with you for catching it. I brought snakes to school all the time during high school (many people did not even know they were there) :) I played wide receiver and cornerback in high school.
it was the prettiest snake i have ever seen!!! it was a juvenile so it had a beautiful reddish tint on its belly...i was gona catch it but the coaches held me back cause they was scared i would get bit....only if they knew it was completly harmless!
I caught a snake during football practice as well when I was in High school. I used to bring pics of snakes and show them to the coaches, so they knew me as the SNake Kid
your welcome....at my track meet today i found my first speckled king snake!! but the only problem was some ignorant redneck coaches killed it thinking it was a "water moacasin" cause it was by a ditch!!!! i was very very disappointed!!!!
I am sorry to here that man. I caught my first spec in La. I just now found a spot near me here in Texas where they are pretty common. I will post a video as soon as I can.

Haha, I wouldn't expect a rat to dive into a river like that. Cool video.

I am not a snake breeder nor a dealor. I am strictly a rescuer/relocater and a photographer. Sorry I cannot help you.

@TXherper161
No, I have never herped in spring creek before. I have heard it is pretty good for certain species of snakes.
