  • Pretty nice lick, but the last arppegios is a Em7

  • Is that a strat ultra w/lace sensors? What gauge strings?

  • Nice lesson--Excellent tone

  • cool

  • I have that same color Guitar

  • I love your guitar

  • wtf what i see doesn't match what i hear when you say g and b and play exactly as you say i get like an octave higher wtf

  • thanks for sharing the lick. God bless

  • sweet tone

  • great!!! more to come

  • Andrew WK lol, jus jokin. great lesson.

  • When I saw the hair I automatically new you knew what you were talking about.

  • can u give a tab cuz i dont really understand what u doing ?

  • nice solo thanks

  • He's gay no doubt, just look at his moves...

  • check out my band...

  • sweet lick, thx for sharing

  • i like your hair.

  • knowledge is power!

  • i didn't understand anything... u say some terms what if i don't know what it means.....

isn't this a lesson ? at least explain what you are doing i don't understand what are you doing

  • get out of the eighties dude

  • I love how clear your distortion is. What pedal/effects are you using?

  • Do much with jazz at all?

  • as soon as you said "Greetings" I said "FAG!" out loud

  • sweet!

  • thanks !! great lick!!

    *from chile

  • You're good, but it annoys me how you move your hand up the fretboard while you're in one position. Use your pinky.

  • Hey are you from Austin and did you play for a singer named Marty?

  • hi there nice lesson, just wondering, where did u obtain the backing track from? Thanks.

  • i´ve just notice i always use this scale when i learn solos xD

  • bedroom rocker ripping off every other guitarist hoping people think your a genius. How about writing some original. And get a life about rubbing off the make of your strat copy guitar. Who cares if it's a copy it's what you do with it that counts. Loser

  • @TheMegahumbucker Misanthrope. If you are not in step with the fact that you can learn something new from anybody, go out and record your triple platinum, international best selling grammy-award winning album now and let us know how you make out. Jerk. To the maker of this vid, please don't stop. Your efforts are appreciated by most. Unfortunately, it is usually the jealous jerk-offs who tend to reply the most.

  • @TheMegahumbucker i know exactly what you mean. My art teacher in school would be at the front of the class giving us a lesson on how to paint in monet's impressionist style and I'd stand up and shout "WHY DON'T YOU PAINT SOMETHING ORIGINAL! STOP RIPPING OFF IMPRESSIONIST ARTISTS WHEN TRYING TO SHOW US HOW THEY PAINTED WHAT THEY PAINTED GARRRGHHH!" I'd throw my paint brushes on the floor and jump out the window.

  • It looks like you either have a giant guitar or a tiny body

  • Awesome!

  • I play and mess around with those scales ALOT, but i keep wondering when im gonna get as good as everyone else... i mean i can make up alot of solos myself. Should i keep practicing all that stuff or should i do something new... i feel like im stuck.... any help? tips?

  • @ZeroElementZero I felt like that too, so I went out and got a really good guitar teacher. I wanted to learn to play things I wouldn't normally and rework my entire style. So far so good. Also, put an ad up on Craigslist every week looking for different people to jam with. Learning from others will keep you from playing the same old thing, and will broaden your style.

  • @ZeroElementZero I find the jam tracks available here on YouTube really help me with phrasing and breaking out of ruts. And concentrate on developing your own style. Its not a race to the finish line, its the wonder of the journey. Beg, borrow and steal all of the licks you can from others, then work them into your playing.

  • eww who licks there guitar ;)

  • Hi there can you explain how you can do a lick in C if the music key is E?? thanks Dan

  • @06gibsonsg06 The 'lick in C' is basically a C arpeggio with the added 9th over the C chord (which also has an added 9th, thus the Cadd9 chord). Even though the progression is based around E minor, you're hitting specific 'target notes' that outline the arpeggios of the chord that you're playing over throughout the progression - specifically the notes of C major over the C major chord.

  • tab?

  • sounds like a lick from a t.v. commercial., hehehe!

  • Great lick love the double stops and the arpeggio is very cool.

    Thanks for sharing mike

  • Mike, great lesson. I'm an aspiring keyboardist and i used the tutorial to follow along so that I could become used to doing pentatonics on the keyboard

  • Nice lick, thanks.

  • Nicely Done! Thank You

  • how do you do the lick at 0:02?

  • you smile to much

  • @nabplayer not possible

  • I like this lick, cool stuff!

  • That's a sweet lick! Thanks for sharing!

  • I found to do heavy bending with that strat trem set up.. you need 4-5 springs to keep the bridge from floating too much. or just block it all together..

  • wo0h!! we have the same guitar!

  • How did you get your axe to sound like that? :O

  • @TruePikachao david gilmour emgs

  • @TruePikachao harmonizer

  • nice lick. the arpeggio is a nice addition to the common blues lick, bravo! i was wondering if those are the dg20 pickups on your strat? if so do ya like em?

  • Yes, they are the EMG David Gilmour pickups. I love them.. they sound great.

  • thought so , cant wait to get some on my squire

  • @mikeelsner

They sound great, much improved sound quality..

  • This was cool! Nicely done, and you kept it really simple.

  • ver good...i am played this part....

  • why would anyone make a Strat sound like that? YUK!

  • Hey!! Who is the name of the music intro?? is a sweet picking very melodic and cool!

  • It's a clip from the song King It Down off of my solo album Stained Voodoo.

  • I really appreciate the close up camera view, good job.

  • was the one part from steve vai´s for th elove of the god? lol:D sounds like it

  • this guy looks like a girl

  • am i detecting a little jealousy around here?

  • Am I detecting jealousy in someone who is claiming someone else is jealous?

Btw "looking like a girl" isn't necessarily a bad thing. Psychological tests have shown that both males and females believe feminine features to be more attractive than masculine features, whether they're on males or females.

  • You won't say that if ever run into Big Bubba on Cell Block C. lol

  • thanks for the informative lesson ...... your a good teacher and nice player

  • I like how you keep it simple and do not dump too much information in one lesson. That is a really good lick. If guitarist could learn three cool licks a year (and master them), they would sound pro in a few years. Many guitarists try to learn too much. They wind-up learning things in a really half-ass way. Keep it simple! Good work!

  • nice one.. great melody.

  • Very good lesson and very good guitarist

  • man that sounds awesome XD

  • Hi Mike,

Your lessons are awesome; please keep them coming!!

    Shawn

  • great tone great little riff.the arpeggio really makes a boring riff sound awsome.

  • Whats eating gilbert grape?

  • nope not gay...note the SRV poster behind him. he's cool. Geez you guys, a guy posts an instructional video to help others and you crap on him....sheesh

  • stevie ray posters do too make people cool, silly.

  • @SammyPrairiechicken

in the words of Tony Soprano: " He's a FAAAAAAAAAAAAG!"

  • you look very gay

  • Dude, he probably gets more girls than you.

  • *shrug* Whatever, I don't think he cares, after all the pussy he's getting lol. He probably planned it all in the first place.

  • You look like a normal guy? By you saying you look like a normal guy you mean like every other guy out there, making you nothing special. But really the more interesting part you are commenting on how gay some other guy looks, for someone who likes to call someone else gay, you are sure acting gay paying attention to other guys' looks... moron. Personality far outweighs appearances by all measures, and yours honestly sucks. Grow up retard.

  • DO YOU LIKE ERIC JHONSON?

  • Great! I love pentatonic licks!

  • when you play the progression @ first, you say its Em, D, C to G

but it sounds like you are playing Em, D, G and G again

  • Isn't is a Cadd9?

  • Checklist of what I need to buy to get mikeelsner's Beautiful Singing Tone:

    (1) Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, or an assortment of Laneys

    (2) EMG David Gilmour Pickup System

    (3) Line 6 Pod Version 2.0

Mike, if I buy all this stuff, for $1000 would you come over and tweek all the setting to the right positions? Becuase i know I'd spend all that cash and without your help it JUST AINT GOING TO SOUND RIGHT!!!!

  • Great guitar player

  • if andrew wk and john frusciante had a baby

  • bigmangiff you are dumber than a box of rocks for saying this guy needs to cut his hair. His hair is cool and he is a musician not a ding dong from Your local town !.

  • how the hell can your name be Headbanging...and you say Ding Dong? GHEY

  • Good Shop lesson dude!!

  • Tone Monster! Damn man.. You mind me asking what amp you use? Sounds very JVM.

  • can i marry you? god dam. you know what your talking about and never confuse yourself when your teachin everything. you got music theory jizzin out every oriface

  • like the lesson im just getting stared with the guiltar and the web so sorry .what kind of info can you give me on how to play and what to look for .and were to start thank you arkid

  • Thanks a ton dude

  • really good !!

  • Thank you, I'm glad I could get you off seeing as you probably don't get off much... ;-)

  • haha nice reply!

  • so you can play a major pentatonic on a minor chord progression???????

  • Why not? lol. And yeah you can change from major to minor through a song or guitar piece otherwhise songs would be either very sad or very happy if they were consistently minor or major. Of course you have to be careful not to lose the feel of the song.

  • that C min arp into the bend is the money, cool lick

  • HELL YEAH! That is a good lesson bro.... keep that up. I like this. Us learners need more vids like this. You make it so easy. 5 STARS!!!

  • lol. "Greetings"

  • AWESOME VIDEO DUDE!!!

  • not gonna lie right... but when i saw you thumbnail i thought you were a girl. lol!

    awesome hair. lol

  • I know you can hardley see it, but thats a badass SRV poster!

  • your very good at guitar....fuck

  • muy bueno!! ;)

  • first two slides in that lick sound a lot like the beginning of the "ten years gone" solo by led zeppelin, just sped up

  • Thats the song! I couldn't place it.

  • is the Cmaj9 arpeggio related to the e minor pentatonic scale in some way, or was it just thrown in there? i'm a theory noob. anyways you got some nice licks goin!

  • Oh...my... gosh. Settings please. LOL. This really helped, though it took me quite a bit to memorize it since my guitar is down my basement and my computer is upstairs x]

  • Very nice...

    Pentatonic (5-note scale (penta))

as Opposed to Heptatonic (7 note scale, e.g. Major Scale.)

I realize it may be easy to learn via emulation, or watching youtube for instance. However, It really wouldn't hurt to pick up a theory book and read a little bit.

  • nice lick,,, not to hard and sounds great

  • epic

  • BIXAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

  • whats double stop ?

  • its when u play two notes at a time, check out some chuck berry licks

  • nice lesson but its kind hard to see were your fingers move

  • i believe its called a penetonic

  • hahahaha sounds like it...

  • lol!!

  • no, its pentatonic...

  • it's an Em7 arpeggio isn't it? no C9 arpeggio?!

  • very cool lesson...has a "Bad Company" flavor to it...A+++

  • it was pretty cool, but it was hard to see what you were playing, but cool riff, thumbs up! :)

  • i liked tht, rly cool

  • First time a video actually showed me something that was truly cool. Thanks dude.

  • does it only use when the key is in minor chord?just like in Em?

  • it would would work in G major to becouse G major and E minor are (donät know the english phrase) connected with eatch other or you could say they contain the same notes. the differens is the root note. so yeah this lick should work in G major too but it all depends on what chords you are playing in G major. it won't neceserely sound good eaven if it's in the same key.

  • thanks mann...you rock..!!!thanks again for the knowledge...

  • nah you can be creative. It can also be in a major chord of G major. Usually in a key of Em, I mess around with it sometimes and it works. Instead of being trapped playing in the scale of e pentatonic minor, I can use g major pentatonic. Well, you should also try to learn the 5 patterns of the pentatonic scale. I find it really useful and be creative with it.

  • thanks mann...you rock!!!

  • One part in the end sounded like a part from cliffs od dover, pretty nice. I liked it alot. Keep doing these videos, i learn so much and it sounds cool to.

  • everything sounds like.... come on feel the noise!

  • 2:11 wish you were here by pink floyd

  • Great tone.

I'm a bassist but interested anyway.

  • learned this easily your a good teacher thamks man kickass

  • what size strings r u using?

  • This is great. ~S

  • guitar teachers on youtube take note: this guy does it right...show the fretboard and break it down. I've seen some "teachers" not even showing the fretboard so you have to guess the notes...good job mike

  • dont think so

  • i meant it sounds like it only higher. the first 10 notes.

  • thanks bud lesson helps alot. btw what kind of amp are you using?

  • In this video, I'm playing through a Line 6 POD 2.0, going directly through ProTools so you can hear the guitar with the track... Generally I play though a Visual Sound Workhorse, Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, or an assortment of Laneys, depending on the situation.

  • hi... I'm abig fan of you mike.. can i call you "mike"? ... how I wish i have a tallent like yours... Is it ok if I ask some of your backing tracks like the Em lick and the Am lick of yours... please please please mike... have mercy on me please... I'll wait for it.. keep on rocki'n mike...

  • Arpeggio section is alot like Johnson

  • if im playing G Major scale, using a backing track which uses chord progression G-Bm-C-D,what should i do if after the backing track change to Bm,do i have to still play( solo) in G major or change it to D, C or Em scale accordingly? is it necessary that after the backing track play the chord C,is it necessary that the solo also end in note C?PLS POST VIDEO for this,a step a step method on how to use the scale in every chord progression,or what to do to the scale when the chord changes, tnx

  • Yes, I'd like to know that too. it would be great if there was a video about that

  • a good question

  • I really like how you break it down in to small steps.

  • nice lick...a bit eric johnson style

  • Hi Mike how is it going? Talk soon. Great video.
