What I don't get is, when anyone from Latin America calls themselves Latino, some White people get angry and say "no, you are not Latinos, Italians, Spaniards, etc. are Latin. You are Indians." Then when we say we're Indians, they say "You have just as much Latin blood as we do, you're Latin." And they won't even let us identify as mixed most of the time.

Native American are counted separately & independly on tribal lists & government rolls as they are a sovereign nation. However, for those of us that share Amerindian, European, and African DNA and may or may not speak Spanish are the ones that fall under the Hispanic umbrella. Add a category for those who identifiy as Amerindian & every1s happy!No?

Hispanic is a false label as well as Latin, Latino or Latin American.

Italians and Romans are Latin, Hispanics are from spain and that is that. as far as people calling themselves that well that is an indication of self hate because western cuture has colonized indigenus people not just physically but mentally. I was in Lanzarote and the local bartender referred to the South American as Hispaniola. It's their own word as Spanish is the language in Mexico southwards (apart from Brazil) Its a crazy argument. He called the American Anglo-Saxon how the hell does he know he is Anglo-Saxon ? His family might be from Russia Finland or Turkey. What I don't like it's the way latin people is taking advantage of this, just because it could give them a better status concerning to migration. I'm native american, and I'm proud of my heritage in my own country (not US), because I met with it long ago, since I was born I could say. We must be proud ALWAYS, not when it is convenient. I used to work with people from Oaxaca and other southern mexican states, and they told me I was güerito, and my skin is brown! but comparing with theirs... well?

My mom is very white and my dad is white-redish hehe! my sisters are white and my brothers and I are tan skinned, but they call me 'negro' cause I'm darker. =P

my hair is very curly and long, I got it straight for the holidays and my mother in law said I looked like Apache. And we had Apaches in Chihuahua! so, who knows!!! =D

I think you are making a big deal out of what to call yourself. If you don't like being called Hispanic, then that's fine, but don't tell the rest of us that we can't consider ourselves Hispanics. After all, it's just a label. Human beings are so much more complex than that.

French is mostly spoken in Africa. Why not include Francic? Why single out "Hispanic/Latino". Brazilians are not hispanic, yet they are sometimes classified as latino. What would they put on the census?

The U.S. Census Bureau does not include Brazilians as Latinos either. I would expect they'd put down whatever their race/ethnicity is. I'm Brazilian, and I always check off black only in papers when my ethnicity is in question, since I'm of Afro-Brazilian background.

However, Spaniards are considered Hispanic by the U.S. Census Bureau, but not Latino. I have a Spanish-French acquaintance, and she told me she can benefit from Hispanic college funds, since she's considered a minority.
