great video! i left in 77 and i remember alot of those people, laura heistand, lisa marco, scott gilbert and bear the lunch lady.the rest of the names i dont know but they look familer.it brings back good memories, thanks
Neat that you saved the film all these years, digitized it, and posted it on YouTube. The kids back then seemed so shy about being on camera -- a stark contrast to today's kids who are so used to putting their entire lives online.
My older brother, Mark Schaaf, is the blond kid at 2:07 and 2:27. Can't remember if he graduated South in '78 or '79. I graduated in '88. Seemed odd to have a designated smoking area in high school back then, and it certainly looks out of place by today's standards!
@WeegeeFromFlipnotes Mark was class of 79 I went to school with him since 5th grade in Darien. A lot of water under the bridge since then. I went to a D.A.R.E. event for my daughter in about 2002 in DGS's gymnasium, in 1975 Styx played there and it is ironic how much dope was being smoked in the gym. Boy times sure have changed! Kids now get charged with felonies for things we did daily. Thanks to Paul Utterbrook for the time capsule and to see myself over three decades earlier.
Sorry Parkman35, took forever to respond, I'm not on here too often as you can see! No my father was not a teacher, just your average working man. I don't know if he is a relative either?
As a young kid, back in the 70's, if your school permitted it, you would have been out there too! I started smoking when I was 14, because like an idiot you think you're being cool. 30 years later, I finally had enough and put the smokes down for good. It's going on 5 years, I've gained many pounds later developed Asthma. So I don't know, how is my health I ask myself? Sometimes I think I was better off when I was smoking!! Seriously though I know I did the right thing!
I was a 79 grad and started smoking at 12. Quit 2 times. 1st time in 1998 for 4 years and again in 2004. I too gained a couple extra pounds and struggle with breathing issues. But my lungs have tremendous capacity. Blew out all 50 candles in 1 blow this year.
Paul! Hey! Thanks for the flash back to the early days of my youth spent puffing away on a pack of hacks and reminds me how much I hated that place! Now that I'm older, wish I would have paid attention and done some things a little differently! :) Live & Learn! Hope all is well! How's your sis Holly doing these days? If you could, tell her hello for me! Mary Bacigalupo

I recognized someone in this Video. They guy with the hat,if I am right, was a football player. He got mad at me and picked me up and put me in the dirty gym towel cart. In fact if anyone knows his name let me know. Cookie. the cafe and hall monitor.
This was in the days before DGS became integrated. The only school I knew of in that area that had colored students was Hinsdale South. Also no cell phones, no iPods, just kids hanging around outside dealing with life's problems.
Well I am friends with Paul Uyttebrouck who filmed it. So I know for sure. Also, I graduated from DGS in '85. At that time, there were probably 30 or so african american students... not many, but some. And it's really uncool to call people "colored".
ckinchgo...you're calling American born Negro kids "African Americans", and the guy who filmed this was "black" and you're telling me "colored" is uncool? What do yuo suggest?
Let's be clear here. For those who may be familiar with DGS today but wren't around back then, things have changed, and I wasn't being critical..it's just a fact. In those days DGS had 1500 students and was 99% "Caucasian" is that ok? The area has come a long way since those days..
Wow...This is awesome. I'm a senior at South right now. It doesn't look like it has changed that much. Except more houses and trees and no smoking area. hahaha. This is the year before my mom graduated (not from south). I hope I can look back at my last day, years from when I graduate. :]
Awesome. I graduated from North 1979. I showed my sons 21 and 19 - they said that's what they pictured it from my stories. Thanks!
