i hate dramatic voices but hers and very few others are beautiful. a real gem. her voice is huge but also beautiful. now we only have huge and very ugly voices..
diference between Nilsson and Callas at e.g. Turandot: Nilsson sings with same power, same forced emotions, same volume her voice is able to generate like Callas but without this shrill overtone we call at German "gellend"
@pega17pl So, nennen wir den "gellend"? Den schrillen Oberton der Callas? Wir...auf deutsch? Ich nicht...."gellend" nenne ich nur das Gerede der youtube-Experten...
Be carefull judging singers of this era unless you were lucky enough to have heard them live. Recording technology could barely cope with higher register of the dramatic saprano voice - eg the Solti ring was recorded at 3 paces from the mic during high notes. Nilsson was disastisfied with the limitations of the technology of her era and felt that with her expansive top the overtones in her high voice were lost due to the loss of volume. The true Nilsson and Flagstad voices were not preserved.
I think both (Dimitrova & Nilsson) were great singers with many outstanding qualities and a few weaknesses too. Birgit was a great wagnerian soprano and Ghena an awesome italian opera singer. But Turandot is an Italian opera that requires wagnerian power. So judging who's superior is a matter of taste. I think they were both great Turandots!
All these RAI performances were pre-recorded and the singers lip-synched during the filming. Although Nilsson is certainly better than most at this, there is still something phony about it. Operatic singing is such a physical act that when they are not really singing it doesn't look natural. The singing on the soundtrack is fantastic nevertheless.
On nearly every video I watch of really good singers, there are invariably arguments in the comments section of who was better than who. Is there nothing else to say? Look at the big picture, people! Must we have a grand heirarchy of singing and then beat other people down when they disagree? It's a terrible tendency among lovers of classical music in general. We are FAR too critical.
Leontyne Price said something along the lines that the voice such a personal thing that its fans also take it personally, too much so. I agree, but would add tha for some reason female singers more than male singers enjoy (or suffer) the consquences.... every diva seems to have her armies of defenders, and attackers.
Of course, though I adore Sutherland (and basically own almost all recordings of) her Bel Canto roles, her Turandot (which I also own a recording of) is kind of weak. The interpretation was perfect though, very thoroughly thought out, but the voice is just not as sharp and not as clear and forwardly projected as of course, Nilsson, Turner, Marton, or Jones.
Anyone heard of Casolla? She's quite good too, but not as explosive as Nilsson, she'll always be the dream standard Turandot.
So when somebody doesn't think like you do he must be on drugs or stupid?
Love your way of discussion.
By the way I had the privilege of seeing both LIVE. Something I'm not sure Royalorgans or tenor200 did. By the way, Price, Tebaldi and Flagstad didn't sing Turandot and sure you heard the others only in records.
I don't know--I find that the "metal" suits the character, no? Though it's nicer to hear a richer, darker timbre with Puccini's orchestration. But hey--she got a LOT of work singing Turandot.
Get the recording from 'Die Walkure" 1959 Philharmonia orchestra with Nilsson and Hans Hotter. There you will find singing that blows you out of your window...Nilsson is at her absolute prime there. Her high notes are unbelievable.
and this from a farm girl who came from nothing and who was told she was not opera material by her first teacher who didn't teach her a thing and who suffered tuberculosis which almost ended any dream of ever opening her mouth in public.
WOW! Goose bumps abound. I have seen several productions of Turandot both live and telecasts as it is one of my favorites of Puccini. This aria always makes me jump out of my seat and cry. Literally! I just wish I would have had the priviledge to see Ms. Nilsson perform it as she clearly owns this role and absolutely no one does it better.
My first trip to the Bayreuth Festival, I heard Nilsson outside the house singing Isolda. She is without peer in so many roles.A true marvel of nature and a noble human being.
NO ONE LIKE HER for this role. Her voice cut thru everything. You may need to be carefull if see it live since may come out bledding LOL. The ease that she has singing this no one has. In orther to produce this kind of sound you have to be superb. This tenor sound great since I don't know any other than Corelli that could be heard on her side in this role. Bravissima!!!!!!!!!
After her Isoldes at Teatro Colón, Buenos Aires, and minutes before taking a plane to Peru for a 4 days holidays in 1971 Nilsson chatted with her fans. She told us that she loathed this video. Miss Wallmann did not know how to do opera in television ! " was her comment. I guess she loathed her unbecoming make up. She looks almost satanic. BUT THE BEST TURANDOT, of course !

Don't try to fighr cause I don't like Wagner that much. But Turandot requires more power and endurance than any other italian opera.
Bel canto great? Off course! There's no other period in music than 19th century italian opera.
