  • The Band was one of my favorite bands back in the day and I was fortunate to see them live a couple of times. If you want to follow a current band that channels The Band and many others from that era check out My Morning Jacket. The just release an iTunes EP with that includes a beautiful cover of this song.

  • Goodnight everyone, this is the only way I know to end this great holiday

  • merry christmas-we all love and miss you rick...thanks for touching our hearts, our lives...

  • This may be one of the few songs from the 1950-? era that will one day be called and used as a Christmas carol. It's that good and the pacing here is almost perfect for that.

  • Great cover version by Screenprints if you can track it down.

  • Thank You i knew I heard this in the 70's was Beginning to think it was one of those Flash Backs they Promised Me LOL

  • I grew up with this band a very part of my growing up

  • what a great Christmas song

  • Under-rated??!! Not then, they weren't. Not by a long shot:

"Rolling Stone magazine lavished praise on the Band in this era, giving them more attention than perhaps any other group in the magazine's history; Greil Marcus's articles in particular contributed greatly to the Band's mystique. The Band was also featured on the cover of Time Magazine's January 12, 1970 issue."

Clapton wanted in, (after Blind Faith) if just as a sideman. Or ask Van Morrison.

    Read Levon's book ...

  • @alive1945 Yet they were under-rated by the public. Three Dog Night, Creedence and others of the same era were far better known than The Band. Yet, The Band was recognized by critics and their peers as one of the most influential groups of the 60s and 70s. I still listen to them more than almost anyone else of that era. Long live The Band!!!

  • @RolioRudus its not that they were never appreciated, its just they never were really a live band, the last waltz was staged to look bigger than it actually was.

if you look at the footage from wolfgangs vault, you will clearly see this

  • @Lazairus There are a number of cuts and out takes from the movie that can be staid to make it look "bigger" and, I've seen, even "smaller" than it was. It's pretty much standard operating procedure when filming a concert for crowd shots to be both tighter and wider than they really need to be. It doesn't change the fact that it was one hell of a show.

And that The Band were in their comfort zone as the backing band with the "start" taking the spotlight. Like when they started with Dylan.

  • @RolioRudus They were also the studio band and backing tour act with more people than most of us from that era even remember. No, they weren't fancy showmen. Just great musicians.

  • Those of us who grew up with this music know they were one of the greatest Bands to EVER exist. RIP Rick and Richard.

  • And why do we never hear this on the radio?!

  • My all time favorite Christmas song, and I never hear it on the radio at Christmas time.

  • Its sad that The band was so underated...

  • @LocalRailfan were they, not in music circles thats for sure, this must be the only good christmas song ive ever heard

  • thanks to Travis singing "The Weight" on Jools Holand in 2000 i have been a fan of The Band ever since

  • this is a beautiful version but i really think robbie's own version has more 'feeling' maybe because it is a really personal song to him because of the birth of his son

  • I love this song!♥

  • The Band was great. Rest in peace Rick. But this was probably the 2nd best x-mas song made.Lennon,s was no. 1

  • bullshit..lennon = poser....rick was the man

  • I love this song,thanks for posting,Rick sounds great...

  • That is correct. His version is great....

  • LOL! And sung by Robbie Robertson who is half Jewish! Live version is excellent too.

  • jesus was all jewish just so you know

  • <3 it

  • Its a great band an a very very very good song

for information im 14 years old

    an i think it´s a wonderful song

  • a wonderfull song, a feeling so so so... a bright dream of love

    Greetings from Bavaria

  • Missing Rickie Danko. Man had a great voice.

  • Definitely my favorite Christmas song!

  • i love this song it is my fav christmas song after my dad showed it to me and i love the band

  • does anyone know where i can find the 'faster', i guess radioized version of this? i think it was just by robbie robertson alone, or maybe not. thanks.

  • The "faster" is found on 1975's The Band Northern lights - southern ... remastered edition .

  • his is my favorite Christmas song. Thanks for puting it here. Merry Christmas Everyone

  • thanks for posting The Band is one of my favorite groups this song originally was from their album Islands

  • thank you so much I told my new family about it and then there it was on christmas day my present

  • Thank you so much. My 22 year old son died 3 weeks ago of pneumonia. He was otherwise healthy. I know where he is and that I'll see him again. This song comforts me more than you know.

  • so sorry for your loss we will all see each other one day

  • Yes we will!

  • Please accept my most sincere condolence. I cannot imagine your loss.

This song is a modern Christmas classic, which I believe was written and performed with divine inspiration. Only that inspiration deserves your appreciation.

May the New Year bring you Peace, Comfort and Joy.

  • Thank you!

  • @Diana5230 My condolences. Just know he is with God.

  • @Diana5230 thank you

  • @Diana5230 we are here only on loan from god may he hold your son in the palm of his hand god bless you

  • sorry for the mistake it must be the bass player robbie roberson am I right he lived in up state ny in the town of woodstock

  • You are thinking of Rick Danko. He played bass and died in 1999. Richard Manuel died in 1986. Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm and Garth Hudson are all still making music.

The Band was one of the most influential, yet consistently under-rated bands of the late sixties and early seventies.

  • I also have been looking for this song I live near where the late levon helm lived I first heard it in the early 80's and taped it off local radio the message is to deep to let a petty thing make some one take it off thank you on this christmas you have given me much joy listening and sharing it with my children

  • You are welcome! I have good news. Levon is alive! Check out Amazon for his latest release. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

  • i've been trying to find this forever. thanks so much. am so glad i found it just in time for christmas. best gift i got. thanks again. i'll be sharing this one for sure.

  • You are welcome. Glad to have helped make your Christmas brighter. I have always loved The Band and was surprised no one else had put this up. My montage needs work, but the song speaks volumes. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

  • the band did not write this, wtf, it was robbie roberston

  • Robbie Robertson was the songwriter and lead guitarist for The Band. The song was recorded by the group around 1976.

  • I think it is really sad you had to explain that to somebody.

  • I almost deleted the post, but decided the best deterent to blatant stupidity is exposure to the facts. If the poster had not used the "wtf" in their remark, I would have forgiven it. This song has too much depth, emotion and meaning to be demeaned by that inclusion.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!! The little baby boy brings the people so much joy!!

  • "the best deterrent to blatant stupidity is exposure to the facts"!!! I agree. Merry Christmas -- and thanks so much for this song. I think it is beautiful.

  • i did realize after the fact that rr was part of the band, my apologizes. im just having trouble finding the version of this song that was sung just by him. it was on the radio a lot this season and cannot seem to find it anywhere on the net. anyone know where to get it?

  • As far as I know, it is only available on the "Scrooged" movie sountrack CD. You might check Amazon or your local music store. I haven't seen this available anywhere as a digital download.

  • That version is also available as a bonus track on the import reissue of Robbie's "Storyville" album. Neither CD comes cheap, though.

There's also an alternate version the Band did with more of an uptempo, rock arrangement. That one's a bonus track on "Northern Lights - Southern Cross".

This version's still my fave, though. Arguably the best Christmas song of the rock era.

  • Fantastic! Thanks for putting it up.

    Colm
