  • That they changed the title I can understand, but why "The Sorcerer"? There wasn't even a native witchdoctor, at least not in the original. Francisco Rabal was considered to be Spain's greatest actor, though I always found his manner too domineering, abrasive and often disgusting to like him. Roy Scheider was able to get under the skin of most of his characters. Let's see how he compares with the great and charismatic Yves Montand.

  • @Hendrikdevuile The( Sorcerer) is the name of one of the trucks that they haul the TNT to the fire in. You can see the name painted on the side of the truck as it passes. Happy?

  • @Shawnkells Thank you. You are right. I read this somewhere else after posting my comment. It was a bad choice of title that remains obscure even if you do see the truck's name, unlike for instance the intriguing and mysterious "M", "7" or "8 ½" whose relevance quickly becomes obvious. This surely contributed to the new version's lack of success at the box office. In contrast, "The Magus" which means much the same thing as "sorcerer" clearly refers to the main character played by Anthony Quinn.

  • One of the greatest cinematic adventures of all time (even in this truncated version).

It's a shame it was a box office failure - possibly due to a misleading title and the fact that Star Wars came out at the same time is this.

  • BEWARE: This is the butchered European edit of the film, which cut out nearly an hour of footage. From IMDB; The European version of the film was re-edited and shortened by CIC, the European distributor, without director William Friedkin's permission. The prologue sequences set in New York, Paris, Vera Cruz and Israel that show what happened to the main characters and why they had to flee to South America, were changed to flashbacks running throughout the film.

  • @TheIntruders It's great that you respect the original so much that you posted this explanation, but I still enjoyed it. What flashbacks there were in this version made no sense whatsoever. I'm surprised that Friedkin didn't take CIC to court.

  • @TheIntruders

We need more comments like this on YouTube.

  • The Yves Montand/Peter van Eyck version was possibly the greatest film I have ever seen. If this one is only half as good (and I have never heard of it, though a fan of Roy Scheider) that will still be pretty good.

  • wow, when that oil pipe fell....that was a pretty dangerous scene to film.

  • roy scheider has nightmares just like in Blue thunder

  • This is truly one of the greats. One that you will always remember after you see it. It is one of the rare remakes that stands perfectly equal with the original. The only real problems I had with the original was the lack of special effects -- if your movie is about the risking your life then show an explosion in all its glory. One of the only problems I had with this version was the title and the opening shot of an ancient carved face -- my guess is they wanted to capitalize on Exorcist.

  • a very underrated film

    & fuck you Papoocanada

  • even better than the french original !

  • what has papoocanada acomplished in life?

  • "Could never act"? Well, he was plausible, and that´s the first condition for acting.

Now, if we like more or less an actor´s job, that´s another opinion.

Is like knowing someone in real life. You may not like him (or her) but you not going to refuse is ability to be human.

  • @papoocanada Nothing could be further from the truth. This is probably the most underrated movie of its time, a brilliant film.
