Weld a breakable prop such as a wooden box in the ship, then weld the tanks to the box.
Set up a gun aimed at the box and when you fire the gun it breaks the box and leaves the tank free floating.
Watch as it splits you will see 2 flicks going from inside the ship to each lower corner of the screen, they are the tracers
