Just dicovered this band while surfing for Early In The Morning by Robert Palmer. What a revelation! I don't know who is alive or dead, but these guys are FUNKY! Long live Mr. Palmer and The Gap Band!
@darrylhaynes charlie wilson main guy, still alive and has a new album out called just charlie. believe he aint singing in his grave. just watched him jigging on the Monique Show
@darrylhaynes Charlie Wilson the lead singer is still alive and released number one albums you here on the radio now. Just Charlie, Uncle Charlie, Charle, ..Last name Wilson. He is not dead
I wish I was there playing the guitar solo with charlie the young guy is ok but he did not represent effectively enough that would put that song in orbit with a electrifying guitar solo
@minggnim are you going by looks or pure talent because if you are going by sound then you will realize that Charlie Wilson is a great vocalist maybe you do not know anything about music
@gagetgirl: Are you one of those folks that thinks that racism only flows in one direction? Get out of your house every now and then. Every kind of person experiences racism and/or sexism. Get over yourself. Charlie can get his groove on with whoever he wants to. It is his choice.
My point is that everytime a brother/sister steps out of their race they are contributing to race instinction. African Americans are not a strong society at this point and muticultualism is the last thing the black community needs.
@gagetgirl good point but as u said african americans, meaning those that reside here in america or who have been americanized. the beauty of america is that everything is mixed. believe me i am all for ethnic unity but if we dislike those of other races, are we any better than the "whites" who turned their hoses on my grandmother, or fired my mother from the cotton fields, or who harass me because of my skin. my point is that if we echo the same ignorance the same intolerance we are the same
@ciaridah I've talked to many people who grew up in the civil rights era and they all agree that in that time period there were a lot more unity and support when blacks were segregated, yeah they were racially oppressed, but they stood together. We don't have that now it was because of the whole idea of blacks and whites coming together and that is never going to happen until black people have financial equality.
@gagetgirl: Race doesn't exist. Their might be certain things unique to a culture or even certain diseases which are specific to a certain group of humans but that doesn't prove that "race" exists. You might mean culture. It is up to every individual to decide what is important to preserve about their forebearers and history. But does that make people who don't know their history any less? Should they feel "less human"? That sounds ironically close to the "confederate" argument for slavery.
@gagetgirl What if they TRULY love each other, should they just WALK AWAY from each other merely because they don't share the same skin color? TRUE LOVE is so VERY rare and only a fool would let it pass! If Charlie and his wife LOVE each other, they deserve to be BLESSED, not cursed!
Yeah thats' called self hatred every time brother or sista that dates or marries outside of their race are contributing to the demise of the black community. Multiculturalism is socially and mentally unhealthy.
I complete agree with you on that. I don't know either how things got the way they are today. We could speculate on that but it wouldn't matter. We have drifted apart and have become more "me" centered, more self-righteous, more self-absorbed, more selfish, self-aggrandizement, and I could go on and on. But one thing we all know is that things don't happen in a vacuum. This attitude it's been fed by different sources in our society and we seem powerless to do anything about it.
I know it is sad, there are still a bunch of good kids in this generation it is the whole mentality today that has changed I think the best attribute that was taught me and so many in our generation was a high level of self respect self esteem because if you do not have those in yourself no-one can do anything for you and if you wanted something you earned it. @pedrom41: Women have abandoned thier tradional roles of family caretakers - instead, being who they think they shoild be on the outside instead of being who they are in the inside. Don't believe me? The divorce rate is obscenely high and the majority of black women are single with child - black men don't want to compete with a woman who tries to be a man. We practically cheer when a woman declares she's a single mother...unless widowed or something comparable, she should show some shame.
@pedrom41 I couldn't agree more. Extremely well put and insightful.
You raised a couple of interesting questions in the process. Curious my friend, what do you feel those different sources are, and why are we powerless against them?
@pedrom41 I feel where you're coming from. But it's always been that way. Do you wanna take hand outs? Well then, you gotta get yours. YOU. But on the contrary, we do have XTC to bring us together, if only for a moment in time.
@pedrom41 the main reason is greed, one example of which is insurance companies denying so many necessary claims
of course, lobbyists and whoever else is behind the scene, in conjunction with our country's politicians, keep perpetuating situations in which the common or lower class citizen is unable to better themselves, in many cases
I wasnt trying to be disrespectful towards anyone or any generation there are a tremendous amount of good kids out there that really get no thanks for being good, I just grew up in an old blue collar town full of many diverse people and remember all kids playing sports outside blocks having parties cookouts kids out late in the summer all neighbors watched each other kids never carried guns or knives it did happen though happens everywhere just different seems we have moved back to the 50s
I'll be 42 next month and I find it truly weird that racism seems stronger today than it was in my youth. Weird is the wrong word... sad is the word. Judge a person by their person, not their race.
I didn't take your comment as being disrespectful. In fact, I was try'n to convey how good we had it back n the day as far as music was concerned. It seems like music like what we hear the Gap Band play'n brought folks together. It's all good.
What is truly amazing is I can say this about being a 40 something, I was taught to respect myself and others would carry it over one thing I see is horrid nasty comments which these people really impress no-one with racial slurs and vulgarities I am white and never had any issues with most people and certainly not to the point were I will call people these names
Just saw Charlie Wilson with K' jon and friends last night at the Paradise Theather (Bronx NY). Awesome! One of the best shows I've ever seen - 100 times better than videos can capture...even better than back in the day!
Before his personal demons took hold, Charles Wilson was with one of the baddesst ass groups of all time baby 30 years ago a great salute to Robert, Ronald, Charles, The Gap Band, nuff said.
WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH THIS CROWD!!?? da best band in the funk world playing in front of them and... NO ACTION!! DAMN!!! WE should've been there showing TGB some REAL love!!! DAMN!!
Can anybody name a Black band that came out in the last 10 years
Like the Ohio Players.Kool &the Gang,Slave, BT Express,Midnight Star,Earth, Wind & Fire,Gap Band,Lakeside,Isley Brothers,Brother Johnson,Chic,Change,New Birth ,L.T.D.,Commodores,Brainstorm,Ready for the World,Mandrill it's going to be real hard
Not singing groups BANDs that sing Don't hurt yourself thinking about it
loosestudios it hurt but I'm gonna do you one better.....IMAJIN and MINT CONDITION...DAM THAT HURT BUT i came up with some groups you aint have in your list there.
seems to be a worldwide situation probably influenced by the americans because in my part of the world-BARBADOS---its the same.
We had so many bands.Every community had a band, every parish, every district. Now you cant find three bands. It will come around again-dont fear. things always do.
I said 'probably ' because American Culture inffluences the world. Its a historic fact that the most powerful nation in the world at different periods in history influences the culture of other nations,
Why even bring it up? If your Nation's music sucks, it's your own damn fault. If you aren't having the same community bands like you used to have, go out in your community and make one instead of being lazy. I play several instruments, and am in a band in my community. I'm not super rich or famous, but I have fun, and entertain people. You need to stop complaining, and fix your own country's problems without blaming them on a country who has only helped the music industry.
I know the point is that now there no longer are community bands, but -MY- point is that you blamed it on the Americans.. and I'm going to say, that it's Barbados' fault for having a crappy music scene, not America's. When our music culture dies, I'm not going to blame it on Barbados.
Nope. What I notice is we don't put an emphasis on learning an instrument anymore. Every kid with a computer wants to be the next super-producer. Why do you think there aren't anymore soul/funk/rnb bands on the radio anymore?
I remember for our 1990 Prom when we told our advisers it would be cheaper and better to have a DJ, they flipped. So we had a live band. It was great.
This music kids need to know this music helped make Hip Hop it was here before Hip Hop its R&B and soul music is Hip hop the beats Rappers get from this music
my favorite song of this group without any contest.. Come on let's go gap band..Everybody clap your hands.. So I ve got to get up...Break dance folies come on... Early in the morning
thats my boi De'sabata on the lead solo @ 3:20 this boi is a beast. most the band members are from the D. 313 always represents. Vicky Hollis and Charlie taking it straight back to church!!!!!
anyone else think it's kinda funny who put on the event, and who sponsored it? NBA sponsored by a liquor company? kinda funny. like NASCAR sponsored by beer companies..

seems to be a worldwide situation probably influenced by the americans because in my part of the world-BARBADOS---its the same.
We had so many bands.Every community had a band, every parish, every district. Now you cant find three bands. It will come around again-dont fear. things always do.
asiba2 2 years ago
Sure, blame your country's failing music country on America.
RebelZidane 2 years ago
I said 'probably ' because American Culture inffluences the world. Its a historic fact that the most powerful nation in the world at different periods in history influences the culture of other nations,
asiba2 2 years ago
Why even bring it up? If your Nation's music sucks, it's your own damn fault. If you aren't having the same community bands like you used to have, go out in your community and make one instead of being lazy. I play several instruments, and am in a band in my community. I'm not super rich or famous, but I have fun, and entertain people. You need to stop complaining, and fix your own country's problems without blaming them on a country who has only helped the music industry.
RebelZidane 2 years ago
Hey
you missed the point completely
how old are you ?
asiba2 2 years ago
I know the point is that now there no longer are community bands, but -MY- point is that you blamed it on the Americans.. and I'm going to say, that it's Barbados' fault for having a crappy music scene, not America's. When our music culture dies, I'm not going to blame it on Barbados.
RebelZidane 2 years ago
you are missing the point
I ask you your age because you see given to argument and appear to be young
I am probably old enough to be your father.
No one is blaming anyone and I am sorry if it came across that way .
It is about trends.
The culture of the country that dominates the world is the culture that will influence other cultures.
asiba2 2 years ago
Nope. What I notice is we don't put an emphasis on learning an instrument anymore. Every kid with a computer wants to be the next super-producer. Why do you think there aren't anymore soul/funk/rnb bands on the radio anymore?
mrthundaboots 2 years ago 2
I remember for our 1990 Prom when we told our advisers it would be cheaper and better to have a DJ, they flipped. So we had a live band. It was great.
