  • bought two males and they are great together. first they bite alot but i let them fly around my room and get comfortable with a couple provoked flights, having them four days now they no longer bite and fly to various parts of the room , i come in the room and sing to them and they start to pitter patter back and forth across the gap between my closet and roof and take flights at will the guy bought them off of told me they love to fly and ive allowed them to do so and are more tame

  • Hi Your kakariki's Are So Cutee .. i also have a kakariki but she isnt tame and is scared of me can you tell me how you tamed your kakariki's Pleasee ?

  • Hi Your Birds Are so Tame And Cutee I Have A Kakariki To But She aint tame Can You Tell How You Got Your Birds As Tame As That Please :)

  • Hi you'r awesome:X your birds are happy with a master like you:) I have a yellow kakariki but she is scaried...when i approach she run.. i dont know what i need to do:( i speak with her but no effect. I leave Rita(her) to fly arround in my room and she likes that:) I've bout her 5 day's ago...can you tell me what i can do to make her listening and don't be scared ?:(

  • You have to give it time. It took months for Bertie to come to us. Just give it time, don't scare Rita and then bit by bit you build trust. Ours were always frightened a little every time we opened the cage, but the fear is natural and then the trust kicks in... then they will let you hold etc... Our Bertie if you 'hold' him would still bite even at this point, they can crack a walnut so be careful!!!

  • any tips for tameing my kakariki? i havnt realy tryed anything, when i first bought them from a pet shop they were very scared of anything that moved! 1 flew away! a big mistake and the other got over it pretty quickly, he comes up to me and lands on me and even trys stealing my food! but if i go to him he shits himself and flys away!! is so annoying watching ur videos of tame kaks! i was told by the pet shop they are easy to tame but the vet said they are not!!! any tips anyone?

  • They are certainly not easy to tame, we just at first put him on the floor to run around. To hold him we used a light towl over him and picked him up in that (liek picking up a baby out of the bath) He bit us quite a bit to start but eventually he calmed down and then by a couple of months he'd come to our hand. They were always scrared a little, but keep at it, they do tame but it's hard graft!!!

  • I can see from your video you show your kakarikis lots of attention and love this can be seen how they act with you both. They make wonderful pets we have a male and after 4 weeks of having him he talks my daughter adores ours we also give it plenty of quality time and let it out the cage frequently!

    Well done to you!

  • Thanks

  • thats a great cage, i have a kakariki also he is in some of my vids also, i was considering getting another one but will need to buy a bigger cage, where did you get this one - seems the perfect size

  • From a Bird Shop in Derby (can find out if you need to know)

  • I would be so happy if mine would be so gentle too. But they are still alive and lucky.

  • I think you can make your Kaks how you would like, but it takes so much time and patience. Ziggi was so so agressive as she was abused by her former keepers and their cat, but not only did we defy the avian vet (who told us she would never fly again as her wing was too badlty mauled) but she became very affectionate. She never stopped 'beaking up' as my hand approached, but I think that was instinct and she never ever bit me.... good luck!

  • I had a pair of Kakarikis, our male died a few months ago, the female has started to pull out her feathers, i open her cage for her to come out but she will go for a brief fly around then go back in, i dont know what to do to stop her yanking her feathers out??! help!should i get her a friend?

  • I'm no expert but I know the feather thing can be a sign of emotion usually frustration. When our male died, our female did nothing but the same, calling out for him as she would if they were in different rooms. It's very sad bu she will eventually get over it. If you buy a new one, make sure not to put them together straight away because if they don't pair, they can fight and hurt each other badly. If in doubt, see an Avian vet (a good one not a normal vet who knows what a bird is!)

  • yes -

get her a friend right away, otherwise her health will start deteriorating..

    Kakariki's need companionship

  • omg when my girl flew away our boy did the same, he wouldnt stop calling out for her, which was so sad, but then his feathers started to come out, at first i thought he was maybe sick, caus e looked grey n all, then he was like near bald. i got him some tonic from a local pet store, n his feathers are perfect again, i still wanna get him a girlfriend again, i got him a boy caus eit was so gorgeous looking little did i kno theyd hate ach other lol.

i hope ur lil girl birdie gets better

  • Her feathers grew back a bit and she comes out still for a while, explores for a bit but she must be getting old now as she still prefers the comfort of her own cage! :) shes happy and singing, I put an old dvd in her cage as a new mirror and she talks to herself alot in that..

  • I only know what caused ours to die which was proventrcular Dilation Diesese (PDD) sorry if spelled wrong but basically it's from averies and passes easily from bird to bird. I do know how you feel as they are such charasmatic little characters, I'm sorry for your loss. Was he in a kitchen? I learned that the fumes from teflon pans also poisons them, but luckily ours wasn't. Also, Lack of calcium in their diet (they'll only eat sunflower seeds if you let them) etc...

  • when u say they need calcium wat do u mean, no matter wat i give my bird, like all the ranges of seeds n stuff, he nibbles at it a bit but mostlly ats the sunflower seeds....is that healthy, i mean wat else should i feed him, aparently ur suppose to give them dried worms, its totally gross, i give them to him and he wont eat them

  • Hey there! I am so sorry for your kakarikis. I've also lost mine 3 days ago. He was standing on the door and my mom didn't see him and closed the door. His head was stuck in between, his neck was broken as a result. We miss him dearly and we wanna have another one just like him yellow, with red stripes on head.

  • That's awful, I mean seriously awful... you have to get another one, I want to but my GF won't now so we have a huge cage just disassembled doing nothing. Hope you find another...

  • Mine died yesterday. He was only 1/2 year old, and I don't know why he died. First he fell down on the floor and ran a bit. But then he didn't walk anymore and I took him up with my hand and he became more and more sick and he couldn't move. And he died in my arms when I called my parents that he was ill. It only took about 5 minutes. He died too young..:( I am in a kinda chock, because it felt that he was like a brother to me.

    R.I.P. Teemu

And do you know what caused his dead? :(

  • i have kakariky too.

but my kakariky have fear because i have this 5 day its beautiful :-*

  • Take your time, they do come round if you are careful and build trust... good luck

  • I know how sad this is, we miss our so badly :o(

  • I have a kakariki as well! ^^ They're such a delight to have. But she's so quiet.. she rarely makes any sound.. She's very active and fun loving. She gets along with my female love bird. Is it only males that make that wicked sound???

  • Thanks for the comment. Our female was really noisy too, but she sounded different to Bertie, she chirped quickly and 'whined' a little too if she was not being fussed. The male was so loud, I will post another video and you can hear him!!

  • thanks so much!! =D

  • Thanks for your comments. This is really sad ut I'm sorry to say that they both have passed away now from 'Proventricular Dilation Diesese' or PDD. It's incurable and common in Averies but can be carried for years. Bertie was male (3 years old), and Ziggi female (3.5 years old). We rescued Ziggi from a cruel home/caged life and they just paired although its not guaranteed 100% with all Kakarikis. We will be getting another pair as we miss them dearly. I know how it feels Kim, it's gutting :0(

  • I loved watching this video. Watched it twice! We lost our Kakariki there recently...Bungle....was breathing condition or something. Anyway, very sad to loose her so this really cheered me up. Are these both male birds? do they get on together? And how long have you had them for? Sorry for all the questions but I was thinking of getting another one and think maybe two would be better company for each other. What do you think?

  • I am not sure why my comments didn't go on here as I have replied, but if you get two please make sure they are paired (you can tell as they will mimic each other's behaviour so when one cleans, they both do, then they wil both eat or both chirp etc...). We miss ours so badly, hope you found some new ones to make you smile...
