Atleast everyone else did it till the iMovie part, I cant do the image on Photoshop lol Im such a fail.. I tried with eVideo's downloaded image but it doesnt fit :/ I use 720p, do you have the letterbox image you used?
hmm.. somehow this isn't working for me. I'm using iMovie 11 though.. maybe apple changed something. but its actually very easy to do this in final cut, you just use the mask shape filter.
Hi There! Thanks for upload, but i have a huge problem... when i get the letterbox "stencil" in imovie and apply "greenscreen". The videoclip just lagg and freeze and then when the "greenscreen" is over, it turns back to the videoclip :S Thanks for answer!, please Leave a PM!
Hey! Great vid on how to make it work. But, when it's applied during the editing fase, it seems to remove any transitions you may have put into place. So is the only way to do it after it's been exported, and then export it again with the letterbox effect?
@NoobTubez Some comments have hinted at an easier technique, Ive yet to try any, and sadly I dont use iMovie 09' as much now since I have been using Final Cut Pro :o
Or........................ you know you can just use photoshop, open a 1280 x 720 transparent image and then just but the black bar. Afterwards all you have to do is save it in png and then put it into iMovie as cutway. To me it's easier but this is just another way.
this is WAYYY better than my previous attempt to letterbox hah. I just photoshopped out the video part, saved as transparent PNG and dragged it in as PIP and resize as much as possible. when you do that, you see the edges of the video lmao.
Thanks so much for this video - I can't believe Apple didn't include a built in letterbox effect in iMovie 09 ! Followed your instructions and it works perfectly , although as you said you have to be careful when filming to keep your subject centred . Cheers
to get green screen you take a selected clip/image from either the panel where all your movie clips are or image files and drag them over your project clips to make that small menu come up, are you using iMovie '09?
sick video. how can you tell which iLife version? I got my macbook pro in July 2009 and its just the version that came with it. Is that '09 or should I go purchase iLife '09
Your version of iLife should be the 09 package, but to make sure, you wanna click on the apple in the very corner, then click on
/about this mac/, click /More Info.../, in the side panel click where it says software, then click on /Applications/, the copyright version of your Garageband, iMovie, should all be 2009.
i love that song!

Is this really impossible to do in final cut pro? Because it seems like a very capable program, but I can't seem to find the letterbox effect.

I tried the same but when I place the jpeg over the clip as green screen it stays white and my clip does not come through like yours.
I only see the jpeg in the preview. Any idea what I do wrong?
evzeeland 1 year ago
@evzeeland hmm, basic info. What are you exported the vid as? 720p? 1080p?
and as long as you are using the same image file dimensions, you should be applying negative video filter to the image in greenscreen.
tell me if that helps. email me back, i might be able to help you further over ichat or something like that.
mecha890 1 year ago
@mecha890 I export as 720p. In Photoshop I save the image as...JPEG. Correct? You mention export but I cannot export to jpeg, only save as.
Thanks.

If I put the jpeg over the video my video does not see through like yours but stays as a black box with white top and bottom. What do I do wrong?

mecha890 2 years ago
yeah i figured it out i was not getting the menu i had to go under advanced setting or whatever so i prefer final cu anyway
dacespace 1 year ago
^^ I respect that. Its for users not so tech-savvy, or dont feel like navigating Final Cut.
