I go to pow wows every year and they are amazing! My mother always buys incense for the house. i need to start buying some of my own. They smell amazing.
Yup - never say "costumes". Costumes are things people wear to make them look like something they're not. You can say "outfit", "regalia", but never EVER call it a costume. (unless the dancer in question isn't native.... ;-) )

ok I understand everyone has a right to free speech and you all have an opinion that's all good ..on top of that if you are a proud native then the way someone expresses themselves should not offend you in any way grow up and if you don't like the way I use my lingo then I suggest you don't read them........
@ndnmomma414 That has nothing to do with it. It's just an unreadable butchery of english language and you look like a fig newton when you talk like that (black on the inside, brown on the outside). That is all
@ndnmomma414 actually, regalia is the appropriate term in most circles. If you have a different word that you prefer, that is fine. But even the word "outfit" can seem offensive to many. Regalia is a more respectful term, IMHO.
@mouster333 Purely out of curiosity, why is the word "costume" considered taboo? Obviously, Native Americans don't wear this kind of clothing in day-to-day life (nor did they pre-contact) and from what I've read online, fancydancing does not have any religious or spiritual significance and actually rose out of needing to have a dance that didn't have spiritual significance after they were banned in the early 20th century. (Seriously, ancestors?! We were still doing this shit in the 1930s?!)
@sailortitan The term "costume" is simply degrading. To say that it is not a spiritual dance is really an oversimplification of the issue. When Indigenous spirituality was banned, the Indigenous had to take their spirituality underground. In other words, white people have no idea what has significance to any Indigenous group - they are simply not invited to that party, as it were. This is not dress-up, this is community. This is not a costume party, this is holding on to hope.
To clarify, I wasn't implying that "costume" meant dress-up or a costume party. :-) In Irish and Scottish Highland dance, the outfits are called costumes--but no Irish or Scottish Highland dancers would describe their costumes as "dress-up" or a "party costumes". Those costumes are a proud part of our cultural traditions--they are described as costumes because they are worn at special events and times, not because they are supposed to be silly.
@sailortitan Different cultures, different connotations. The Scots and Irish, though certainly oppressed here in the states, brought their heritage with them. The Indigenous people here were often stripped of their heritage in most unimaginable ways- banning the cultural expressions, stealing the children, etc. - so the term costume can feel offensive even when the person using it doesn't intend offense. I think the Native people are constantly battling dominant perceptions of their cultures.
@mouster333 Thank you for sharing your experiences and observations with me. I think what you say bout Native people battling perceptions about their cultures is certainly true in a way it probably isn't for most other cultures in the United States, and I can see where when one person says "costume" only in the context where I meant it, another person means it in a more pejorative context. One of the reasons I felt it was important to ask the question was that if there was [cont]
@mouster333 a deeper spiritual connotation to the fancydancing costumes, I felt it was an important thing to be aware of where sources I had read so far hadn't gone into possible spiritual connotations that the dance might have had.
you need a base usually or rope frayed together then have a loom with thread attached to it add horse, porcupine, or turkey beards to it but tying it to the tread then sew it to the base depending on the type you want will dictate the amount of rows
(My 10 year old son posted the previous comment, by the way.) It's traditionally a male dance. Likewise, there are female versions as well. Fancy shawl dance for instance. Have a nice day.
