  • He didn't fail. He was demonstrating, for those who are too ignorant to comprehend, an alternative technique, for people who do not have the right equipment or do not have a spotter with them, when you are unable to make another rep while bench pressing. How in the world is that a fail? What I think a fail is, is not knowing what to do after you can't lift the barbell anymore and get injured in the process. *sigh*

  • @hendrixalfaomega No collars is better if you fail a rep, but with poor form, it can be worse. Depends on the weights too, how much slip in them. Used to not use collars, strained my shoulder playing rugby, trained 2 days after not worrying as it was minor. The bar was lopsided because my shoulder was weakened. At the top of the lift a few reps in, struggling, I jolted the bar and slipped a plate and lost stability. Whole thing came off balance, dropped 120kg and broke a rib.

I can't tell you how often I have to pick a weight up off someone with a bar on his chest looking like he's about to pass out. Great advice and everyone should be made to watch it before they're allowed near a barbell.

  • Don't EVER put the clips on when you're bench pressing alone. Something like 8 people a year die because they're benching in their basement or garage and they put the clips on and they get trapped underneath the bar. The reasoning is obviously because if you got the clips on you can't tilt the weights off the bar if you become trapped underneath

  • Yeah I would never collar the bar when lifting alone. Also though you have to really know your body and know when to go for that next rep and when not too. If there's any doubt just rack it, better to be safe then sorry.

  • hahaha i usually do that too, i make a super set out of it. do cleans for 10 reps, without stopping go on a incline ( keep incline bench close behind after cleans ) then incline bench till failure roll it down your body and stand up and do barbell rolls for 10 reps, drop it grab some nearby dumbells and standing flies for 10 reps, then end it with 20 pushups lmfao.

  • I've always thought this would be a good way to do it - Only problem I can see is if your abs aren't strong enough to hold the weight. That being said, if your abs can't hold the weight of what you're benching, you should probably be crunching, not benching!

  • I train heavy at home all the time, I find it a lot easier to hit weights when its u vs the bar... Matt Kroc posted a video on this saying some of his best PR's were training home alone without a spotter

  • @TheCompaq208 My guess is if you train upper and lower body equally then it won't be. All you have to do it raise your torso while rolling it down towards your legs. Just keep your body flexed and it will work.

  • Always bench with a spotter. You may not be able to do this if the situation calls for it. I was lucky when my muscle failed and the bar came crashing down and rolled towards my neck I had a spotter to help lift it.

  • nice instructional for the "roll of shame". one tip for others make sure your legs are open enough when the bar gets to the crotch, does not feel good rolling major weight over the nads. also it is better to bench without the collars as previously mentioned. just be careful when you dump the weight on one side because that counterweight is going to slingshot like a bitch

  • @theusernaem I think it means having those clips at end of the weights. What jitzfitz is talking about is that some people when benching alone like to bench without using the clips to hold the weights in place. That way if they can't lift the bar they can tilt the bar and slide the weights of one end then the other to decrease the weight. I am personally not confortable doing that. I rather use dumbells when training on my own. It is much easier to drop.

  • If you bench alone at home you should be using a bench or smith machine that uses a safety catch system. It takes as little as 30 pounds dropped from just a few inches to crush your windpipe. If you're lucky and drop the bar you might only break your nose, chip a tooth or break your jaw or collar bone or crack a few ribs. If you drop it on your neck, and you are alone, the outcome can be bleak to say the least.

  • Greetings from Germany, and thank you for this instruction. BP in solitude has some hazardous potential if the event of failure is not at least occasionnaly tested. If I worked out at home then I would absolutely purchase a Power RACK and practise BP within, with positive movements. Such an equipment is multi purpose and it is the pure GOLD of savety! You can even put an incline bench within, HANG up a pair of dumbbells in the Rack, and excercise inclined BP over the max ROM in full SAVETY!
