Very good info! Thanks for the post Keith Truth! I have one question however,..... Who is your "gosh" and who is your "Jeez." These euphemisms stand directly in the place of "God" and "Jesus." It is still taking the Lord's name in vain and thus blasphemy.
@NONEshallPERISH The point is that neither gosh nor jeez are God's names. Scripture nowhere argues that one can not use euphemisms. Since they are not God's names and no one says "thus saith gosh" indicating that gosh has become YHWH's proper name in our society, it is not blasphemy. I understand your criticism, but its not a Biblical argument. It is the reasoning of man. You're free to believe your concept, but don't impose it on others since it doesn't come from Scripture.
Good video Keith but just wanted to mention that GOD is not a name per say but rather a noun describing a deity just as the word person would describe a human being. As well, many people don't know the name of the LORD(in the Old Testament) which is probably a good thing and not everyone has or believes in the same God. Just my opinion, what do u think?
@Zechariah46 The Greek Christians who wrote the New Testament under God's provision used Kurios and Theos (/Lord God) as the Father's proper name. Therefore, YHWH supports that since He is behind the New Testament. In our culture God has become YHWH's proper name in the same way. So I would disagree with you.
@KeithTruth I understand that but you see there are many "lords" and many "gods" For example, the Muslim god, the gods of the Hindus and the Budhists. They use the word god as well as lord but yet when they use those "names" they don't speak of the same GOD you and I speak of.
@Zechariah46 Doesn't matter. If false religions use theos or kurios (God/Lord in Greek) they're using God's names since the New Testament uses those names as YHWH's proper names. When the Greek NT quoted Hebrew Old Testament passages which mention the name YHWH, it used the word Kurios instead of YHWH. Think about that. Theos and Kurios have become the names of God.
@2ECFIGHTING2 Thank you for fulfilling all the Biblical texts on the total depravity of man. You strengthen Christians' faith in God's revelation by your behavior. You're dead in sin, under God's wrath, and guilty before God. But by repentant faith in Christ you can be declared righteous in God's sight - forgiven for your offenses against God. Then God will change you into someone set apart from the evil of the world. I hope you will escape hell and receive Christ.
I have trouble understanding why God would command the woman`s son to be killed. Doesn`t that also break one of the ten commandments? How is it ok for people to kill?
There is an Almighty God and his annointed King Jesus, and yet Gods are plural in our planets histories and modern day religion. Everyone is invited to connect with the Creator, worthy of all Glory, Honor and Praise....you just have to choose it, seek it. Obeying the Top Ten is an absolute must!! As well as perseverence....keep on keeping on!
Thank you for posting! Holy spirit condems blasphemy this same way in my reality as well. How challenging to try and awaken others to the truth of how easily blasphemy rolls off the tongue in this day and age, and how severe the sin. There IS a TOP TEN. Blasphemy is number 3 on the top ten things you had better not do. When you find Jesus is changes your life, for the better.... it's not easy, but it's worth it. How can a person not want to share with others the filling of that void, with love?
No. Some professed Christians think "The Shack" is 1 of the best books written. They say "it's fiction" or "God can appear anyway he wants", etc. I explain the author, in an interview, explained he had conversations with "god" (not my God) during the night & that's how the book came to be & was going to call it "Conversations With God" but that title was taken. Doesn't matter if it's fiction, to write a book & describe God as a large black woman is so offensive, irreverent, etc. 1 Tim. 6:16.
Every time I hear the GD word in a movie, etc. I literaly cringe. well, everyone in my family does.lol. interesting video regarding the topic: watch?v=jonhHVpdkIw
Very good video, but I strongly disagree that it is better to say, "Oh my gosh". "Gosh" is just a euphemism, a replacement word for God, and the motivation behind it is the same. It's similar to someone saying "Oh, shoot" when they hit their thumb with a hammer. They really mean the other word but it is more socially acceptable to say, "shoot".
I recommend that we all respect our God my avoiding even those replacement words and phrases (gosh, dang it, gosh darn it, jeepers (Jesus), etc.).
@GodsMan500 Well there is no Biblical affirmation of that so you're free to believe it but don't force it on others. What Scripture does condemn is Using God's name in vain.
Our words have meaning. The Lord tells us to be very careful with them. Clearly, many words are euphemisms for curse words, and many are euphemisms for Jesus Christ and God. I have no intention of "forcing it on others", rather, I am calling people to think about what those euphemisms ACTUALLY mean.
I suggest that using God's name in vain with euphemisms is at least the same (some might say worse because they are a subterfuge) as using the actual words.
@GodsMan500 Seeing as you're a trouble maker you can enjoy the ban. Love you brother/sister but you are attacking people on here and not receiving correction at all.
This video should be a no-brainer to anyone. If you're using OMG or JC in place of a curse word because you think curse words are bad, then how does using God's name make things better? You're basically turning God's name into a curse word by doing that. And how is that NOT using God's name in vain!?
'Real' Christians wouldn't be saying OMG or JC in such a context in the first place.
TBH, if Americans weren't so uptight about swearing OMG & JC would never have been taken out of context.
It always makes me cringe when I hear it in movies or others' conversations. I once had someone tell me I shouldn't say "Holy cow!" because some religions do believe cows are holy.
When I hear someone say 'Oh my God,' in the movies, it literally hurts... I watched Super 8 sometime last week, and that's all I heard - mostly by children; Oh, my God -or- Jesus Christ, every five seconds ... it was terrible.
...because OMG and JC have become idioms... Unbelievers have no idea what it is they're actually doing or saying. I'm only convicted to refrain from saying it myself, correct other Christians who say it, and remain consciously aware of when it is said, even by unbelievers.
I have many atheist/lukewarm Christian friends, who's lives are lived as an insult to God, does that mean that I cannot enjoy in their company?
Totally agree, though, sometimes i do say omG, a bad habit from my days as an unbeliever, which was most of my life. it is always followed with, I'm sorry, should'nt have said that because i never mean to say it. Once i get rid of this reflex, i would also try to refrain from saying etymological related expressions as, Oh my Gosh and Jee!
I agree, Keith. People should not blaspheme God. But when someone says, "OMG" that is not necessarily blasphemy to Yahweh because "God" is not the Judeo-Christian God's real name. The God of Israel's real name would be something like " Yahweh". So when one says " OMG", someone could respond, " Which God?" The God of Islam? The God Odin? but usually when people say, " OMG" they are referring to the Judeo-Christian God Yahweh so in that case yes, that would be wrong.
@DivineTranscendence I answered that claim in the previous comments. Theos and kurios (God and Lord in Greek) functioned as God's proper name in Greek-speaking 1st century Christianity and Judaism. They were used in the NT when it quoted OT passages referring to YHWH. You will see theos pater (God the father) all over the NT serving as YHWH's proper name. Are you telling me it wouldn't be blasphemy if someone said theos pater in place of a curse word? Now apply to English.
@KeithTruth I'm insinuating that depending upon the conext of the usage of the word " God " in vain it can either be dishonorable to Yahweh the Judeo-Christian God or not. For example: A satanist holds that Lucifer is his " God " and whenever he say's " OMG!" that would not be dishonorable to Yahweh because it is not in referrence to Yahweh, but rather to Satan.
@DivineTranscendence .There is only one Creator. There is much confusion, too much options and deceptions. But know there truly is an energy essence that is God. Also refered to as the Great Spirit, and we are little spirits of the Great Spirit. There is a spirit relm, possibly multiple dimensions? If we can make ourselves worthy and available to God.we truly will know there is only one! You will realize God is there all the time. Blasphemy is so detestable, and folks dont get it, soo decieved.
@b0bk Idk if you received my initial response so I will do it again. I believe in Yahweh as the supreme creator God, but I also believe in the literal existence of other contingent gods that make up the divine council of Yahweh in Heaven. These gods are not "angels" or "humans". They are referred to as the Host of Heaven. The Bible teaches the Divine council in Heaven and Jesus himself even alludes to it. "God" can refer to various things.
I heard saying things like "oh my gosh" can also be considered blasphemy because what you mean to use is the Lord's name but you know that's wrong so you use something similar, but it still carries the same implications because of the original intent.I think its called a mince or something but i heard that sayings like that came about so people could still express their blasphemy but in a way that was not obvious to their culture
It saddens me to see so many people try to hold on to these culturally accepted blasphemies against God by distorting Scripture. Maybe it is time to shorten my friends list on here.
Keith the kid was also a drunkard, also he blasphemed gods name the god because his parents were trying to discipline the child when he blasphemed gods name. His parents couldn't sub dew him cause he was out of control. Thats why they stoned him. Which was god used this is an example of what happens cause this is a serious matter to god.
@vivaramones1 The principle purpose was for blaspheming God's name. This is explained near the end of the episode in vv. 15-16 and then the universal command is given that anyone who blasphemes God's name or curses God (not in conjunction with fighting, or resisting discipline, but just for the blasphemy), should be stoned: "And speak to the people of Israel, saying, Whoever curses his God shall bear his sin. Whoever blasphemes the name of the LORD shall surely be put to death"
I am a Human being but that isn't my name.God's personal name is YHWH."My God" is declaration it doesn't mean anything because it's not a name. such as GodDam*** using it to curse someone or something is wrong because it brings negativity which is not of God's nature because it's a form of hate. The only name given onto man is the name Lord Jesus Christ which is Above all names that shouldn't be used in vain.
@megaman90 God's personal name YHWH was translated to kurios/theos (Lord/God) in the NT when quoting the OT/referring to YHWH. Thus, theos and kurios do function as YHWH's proper names in the NT. Those are generic words for God though, just like our English word God. Thus, it is blasphemy if someone says "theo** damn" or "G** damn". NO SCRIPTURE says the only name you can blaspheme is Jesus Christ. It says He was given a name above every name, not that only His name can be blasphemed
You are not a 'Human being,' capital 'H...' You are just a human being. I'm sure everyone has learned in grade school the difference between God and god. 'God' is a proper noun, the name of the Christian god of the universe, and god is just a noun. People say, "Oh MY God," in which case, they would be saying 'Oh YAHWEH,' anyway!
@Knucklehead281 Only to those who 1.) don't watch the full video to see the Biblical validity of all the points made or 2.) to those who do watch the full video but are not saved. I hope you fall into the former camp and not the latter - so please watch the full video and then meditate on those texts. God bless.
@KeithTruth I did watch the full video, and I am saved....even of your own theological understanding (Well I'm a reformed baptist) but this is laughable to me. "A true christian won't laugh when television, movies or music use this kind of language." So the sign of salvation is if someone laughs at an OMG joke or not? You have got to be kidding me hahaha
@Knucklehead281 A true sign of salvation is God's Holy Spirit living within them. The principle purposes of the Holy Spirit are conversion and conviction. If someone is being convicted of sin and knows that God hates blasphemy, are they going to enjoy or laugh with things they know God hates? You say yes right? Okay then are you saying God's Spirit is not powerful enough to do His job and convict that person about such language being an abomination?
Great and very convicting video, brother. We as believers of Chgrist should continue to work on holiness and to be set apart from the world. That would also include the doing away of saying 'OMG'. Saying "JC', well, that goes without saying.
So, that I may learn if this is so, where do the Scriptures or historical records (Church Fathers, Mishnah, etc) indicate that using the title "God" or "Lord" is blasphemy? I never thought it was. So if it is, I'd like to know.
@AgApE010 Sure, look at how the NT uses the words kurios and theos instead of YHWH when quoting OT texts making Kurios/theos YHWH's proper name in the NT. Thus if someone where to say "Oh theos" or "Oh kurios" when they were angry or lost some kind of match - using it as a curse word it would have been seen as blasphemy or using the Lord's proper name in vain. The book I recommended earlier has a footnote with other 1st century evidence for you.
I didn't see how saying "OMG" is blasphemy. I understand how saying "Jesus Christ" in a disgusting manner is blasphemy, for that is the name of the Lord. I see how using YHVH in a manner that is not reverential is blasphemy for, again, that is his revealed name. But "God" is a title, not a proper noun. Same with "Lord."
@AgApE010 No I'm sorry using God's names and titles (El, Adoni, Kurios, Theos) in an unprofitable way or in vain falls under blasphemy. The learned commentators are clear on this, same with the 1st century Jews. Ron Rhode's book "Reasoning From the Scripture's with JW's" talks about how when JW's say "In John 20:28 when Thomas says 'my Lord and my God' he was saying 'oh my God' out of joy basically" how that would be considered blasphemy in the 1st century based on Scripture.
Im a Christian but, i dont really have a problem with some words: for example people always mention Goddammit(sorry for those offended), but do u really use Gods name in vain, u simply ask for God to Damn something, do u really offend the name of God in that way?
@kmjansen83 The problem is people use that first phrase you mentioned in place of a curse word without even believing God or His ability to damn people. So it is blasphemy because the word God in conjunction with another word is used in place of curse word.
@kmjansen83 No because the phrase has taken on the atheist meaning in our culture. If someone said "Hitler was probably damned by our great God" that is one thing, but to say "*** damn it I hit my toe" that is another.
@KungFatty A true believer (one who trusts in the person and work of Christ being justified) will be a true follower of Christ as well. Since they are regenerate and going through sanctification they will seek to follow Christ's commands since Christ's Spirit lives within them and convicts them of sin etc.
Those " Christians " who say such things give the stupidest excuses without support from Scripture and that shows they are either 1 of 2 things, 1) not saved/born again\regenereted or 2) uttery foolish, and so are in much need of teaching on both both sides.
Very good info! Thanks for the post Keith Truth! I have one question however,..... Who is your "gosh" and who is your "Jeez." These euphemisms stand directly in the place of "God" and "Jesus." It is still taking the Lord's name in vain and thus blasphemy.

"A true christian won't laugh when television, movies or music use this kind of language." So the sign of salvation is if someone laughs at an OMG joke or not? You have got to be kidding me hahaha
Knucklehead281 1 month ago
@Knucklehead281 A true sign of salvation is God's Holy Spirit living within them. The principle purposes of the Holy Spirit are conversion and conviction. If someone is being convicted of sin and knows that God hates blasphemy, are they going to enjoy or laugh with things they know God hates? You say yes right? Okay then are you saying God's Spirit is not powerful enough to do His job and convict that person about such language being an abomination?

@Knucklehead281 Let me follow that up, a person may slip up on this but will be convicted later and repent - learning to never repeat this error.

Great and very convicting video, brother. We as believers of Chgrist should continue to work on holiness and to be set apart from the world. That would also include the doing away of saying 'OMG'. Saying "JC', well, that goes without saying.

@KeithTruth
So, that I may learn if this is so, where do the Scriptures or historical records (Church Fathers, Mishnah, etc) indicate that using the title "God" or "Lord" is blasphemy? I never thought it was. So if it is, I'd like to know.
AgApE010 1 month ago

AgApE010 1 month ago

Just for discussion purposes
kmjansen83 1 month ago
@kmjansen83 The problem is people use that first phrase you mentioned in place of a curse word without even believing God or His ability to damn people. So it is blasphemy because the word God in conjunction with another word is used in place of curse word.
KeithTruth 1 month ago
@KeithTruth so if you say it as a Christian with the knowledge God can damn people, its less of a curse word then if you use it as a non believer
kmjansen83 1 month ago
@kmjansen83 No because the phrase has taken on the atheist meaning in our culture. If someone said "Hitler was probably damned by our great God" that is one thing, but to say "*** damn it I hit my toe" that is another.

whats the difference between a follower and a believer of Jesus Christ >? : )
KungFatty 1 month ago
@KungFatty A true believer (one who trusts in the person and work of Christ being justified) will be a true follower of Christ as well. Since they are regenerate and going through sanctification they will seek to follow Christ's commands since Christ's Spirit lives within them and convicts them of sin etc.

Those " Christians " who say such things give the stupidest excuses without support from Scripture and that shows they are either 1 of 2 things, 1) not saved/born again\regenereted or 2) uttery foolish, and so are in much need of teaching on both both sides.
