Robinson in his book felt he was robbed. As he recalls it the fans booed the descision, but it sounds more they booed the scoring of Al Bearl. Robinson in his book said he did not like Basilio, (he liked Fulmer) As I remember it was something about Basilio's mob connections (Probably more to do with his manager having to talk to those guys than anything else) And Basilio later said he did not like Robinson, found him arrogant. In recent years, Basilio has been made to look like the a better per
Basilio looks like he was at least, 20 pounds lighter than Robinson......could it be possible that they were fighting with that of a great difference in weight?!
mikk.... I would love to see you go against a feather wheight. I see nothing wrong with there foot work orther than they were both all around great fighters, and trying to get a feel for the other, if not addapt.
"great"ray robinson, looks like nothing really, cant imagine hearns, dlh,or many other welters wudn't have beat him,4get him competing at middle with hagler, roy jones, monzon etc
boxererrik are you for real, their footwork is terrible and they both are moving the same way around the ring lol, u need to actually have a look at the quality of todays fighters to make an outrageous statement like that, the sport has massivley advanced from these days
danm sugar ray is fucking huge compared to basilio... he has a huge size advantage on basilio.. i don't care what it said on paper.. ray robinson has a good 15-20 pounds of natural size
dont give a shit what the outcome of this fight was on paper, sugar robbie won this fight as far as I'm consered, ray robinson lightining speed killer combos, and the movement, all in one package, Ali and sugar ray leonard all had him as there idole, And not without reason, i meen, check this guys youtube footage, and compare to any fighter, or middleweight fighter, he would have killed pavlik, artur abraham marvin hagler, tommy hearns or any middleweight fighter that had fought in the past
I am big fan of Sugar Ray Robinson. Watching him boxing is .....
Everybody that boxed or knows boxing understand what I mean.
But I have to admit that I am a even bigger fan of Basilio. I ve watched a few fights on ESPN Classic and on Youtube. He always gives a 100. The fighters were so great back in those days.........
The punishment Basilio took in the 12th was incredible! If his head wasn't connected to his neck, I'll bet some of those shots would've sent his head flying about rows! It's even more incredible that he came on strong like he did in the 13th
lts stop saying it was cause of age cause I bet if Sugar Robinson was 30 and Basillo was 37 everyone would be like Basillo's got alot of heart. Both were great and fantastic fighters. They'd kill every welterweight around now with ease
Classic fight, Sugar Ray had his moments and so did Basilio, would liked to have seen the entire fight, couldn't figure out the disparity in scoring between the 2 judges. These 2 fighters were among my favorites all time.
Both were great. Obviously Basilio is nearer his peak, but he took punishment that many a fighter would have quit at.: unstoppable. Towards the end of the thirteenth, Robinson hit him with a left hook that spun his head but he didn't even look like going down. Pity the ninth wasn't featured: Peter Wilson, the late BBC journalist, said it was the best round he ever saw. I'm sure it was this fight and not the rematch.
It's already been said many times but indeed, Sugar in his prime would hit the living shit out of Basilio. Sugar was the greatest. Check out my tribute.
sugar did hit the shit out of basilio. Basilio was a tough motherfucker. Never off his feet his whole career. Angelo Dundee called him the hardest trainer of all time, and he trained the rock and muhammad ali.
Ive just had a look at this incredible mans boxing record,i didn't realise that he had a total fight card of 298 fight with 261 wins...lol was he human? i know that fighters fought a lot more back in the day but that is just inhuman. All i can say is he must of been some man and one hell of a fighter
Check out wilie pep who was in a body cast after a plane crash, came back to fight another 60 some times and won another championship, fighters today are lame in comparison.
Robinson may have allowed Basilio to win by being over confident, but make no mistake, if Robby were in his prime he would have walked through the very tough Onion farmer from upstate NY.Sugar was THE best ever & as good as Pavlik is, he would not beat Ray.
I think it woulda worked out this way either way. This was a vendetta. Basilio had some shit to settle with Ray. Robinson was the only person that Basilio hated even after the fight to this day. Carmen and his wife went to see one of his fights and saw him pull up in his pink caddy and Carmen introduced himself and tried to shake his hand and Robinson kinda moved him aside and kept going. He said that he was humiliated in front of his wife and he vowed to get back at Sugar Ray.
don't underestimate Basilio even though Robinson was 37 and Basilio about 30; the age is somewhat offset by the fact that Robinson is considerably larger. Basilio had a lot of heart as did Ray Robinson.
I've been going back and watching SRR vs. Fulmer, SRR vs. Basilio, when they were done with their careers, they had nothing left to prove. They all fought like true champions.
What do you guys think Carmen Basilio would do to the guys in his weight class today? I'll tell you what he'd do. Carmen Basilio would be in jail for manslaughter. That's what!
This is such a great fight, i wish the whole fight was on here. right as this video starts, basilio is just finishing 1 of the most amazing combinations ive ever seen a man take. the fight would have been stopped now a days. But damn, these 2 put on 1 hell of a show on this night. basilio had to come up 14 pounds to take this fight. both of these guys have more heart than any boxer today
Both of these fighters are incredible, if only for their ability to withstand so many punches. There are so many landed blows in this fight, and yet they both remain tenacious and focused, even after staggering a bit. Just fuckin' amazing to watch.
carmen basilio is one of my favorite boxers its strange how him and lamotta both beat robinson and both lost and both had the same style but lamotta is alot more famous. I would love to see them fight eachother
rickanderson, seeing as your such an expert boxer, i'd like to see how you would even after 1 round in the ring with either 1 of those boxers, you idiot! It's called being tired and exhausted!
yup that ture hes stronger than leonard but AS fast and some people thinks he the greatest of all time but i think its all about ali but not really evander hollyfeild but he kicks ass to (sometimes un like the time when he was fighting micke tyson thats when he got a piece of his ear bitten of) and some people dont know that that was evander holyfield
mistavega doesn't have clue what he is talking about.robinson was the best pound for pound boxer there ever was, ali admitted it himself he would torture any boxer today!!
I'd also like to point out to you, MistaVega, that the action shown is from near the end of the fight, when both fighters are fatigued. Even earlier on, they would have to fight at a different pace to account for fights being 15 rounds rather than 12. Yes, I know that the fighters of today are better than they were in the 50s, though.
You said dat robinson wasnt as good as modern fighters, and dat boxers from the 50s are not as good as boxers from 2day. Dats wats not true. And yeah there not the same, boxers from the 50s were alot better. Oh yeah robinson here is 41, basilio is in his 20s.And most of the videos u see of robinson are videos from when he is past his prime they dont have any videos of when he was in his prime. Old day boxers will always be better than modern day boxers.
Seriously I have no respect for either of them, they're slappers like that one british faggot who beat weak ass lacey. I'd one hit k.o. both these pussys, any boxer from our era could take out these two chumps, even the feather weights
Well, Robinson might not be as good as the top fighters from more modern years (although I haven't seen much of him), but to say that he'd be crap compared to all the guys of today is ridiculous. He'd still be able to beat nearly anyone in his division (I'm speaking of the division overall, not just the top ten). If you watch average boxers of today, he's still way ahead of them.
Everyone knows that robinson was once a welterweight and never lost there but few may know that he actually began as a lightweight. He didn't crack 140 lbs until his 9th fight and even at the age of 23 he went down to 140 to fight henry armstrong.
