I had to practice it a million times in order to get it pronounced even CLOSE to what it's supposed to be! No we never say schadenfreude in our daily talk - I didn't even know what it was until the song! :)

Brilliant observation, mctrmt. I have thought this for some time. The viewing audience rejoices when someone gets "kicked off the island." We rejoice that we were not the ones banished. We point and laugh (even if its just internally) and think, "at least I am not THEM. Hahahaha!!!"

Some schadenfreude is healthy, such as laughing at a clown slipping on a banana peel. I am not suggesting this is true of reality TV however.

I teach philosophy at a community college and a student of mine last semester almost howled when I mentioned the idea during a lecture. She is also a big fan of Avenue Q (which I had never heard of) and she informed me of this song. Its funny how small the world is sometimes.
