  • Another thing you see in this video that you don't see anymore are the code poles or telegraph poles along the track. Look at that! Some of those poles have 7 brackets! Too bad all those poles have disappeared

  • Its strange that 4274 wasn't preserved after its last runner over Donner, any thoughts?

  • Advantage of having a cab-forward locomotive: Greater visibility for the engineer and crew. Disadvantage of having a cab-forward locomotive: The cab is the first thing to be destroyed in the event of a collision.

  • Interesting side bar- Before the musium she sat infront of the sac. sp shops. If they needed to move shop crews would use a deisel loco. BUT once in awhile they would chargr her boiler with air and move her around on air.This was told to me by shop personel who did this.Ive seen this done with outher loco's myself that are running on tourest lines so it is possible.P.S.-Dont get your hopes up.Air is alot different than steam.

  • @13normc1 Basically, fuel delivery for the AC series locos was a three-step process: First, live steam from the boiler was ran through a series of coils built into the walls of the fuel bunker back on the tender, preheating the fuel. Then, compressed air was siphoned off from the brake system and used to pressurize the bunker to the tune of five pounds psi. Then finally, a series of pumps drew the fuel through a supply pipe running along the boiler's left-hand side to the fire box.

  • i love the class becuse it so unusual and funy looking i love steam loco becuse i like history and steam is history i like it and i wish that steam was still being use is north american and it not :-( im only 13 but i like old thing my dad got me to like history and he work for the canadian pacific railroad so i get to go in to CPR yards in calgary and see the 2816 a 4-6-4 H1b Hudson steam loco and the last one of her class

  • Wish they would bring this baby to Portland, OR with the SP 4449 and other Steam train they have and make a home for it and do exursions. They do so many excursions with the SP 4449. This train would be so great. They would even have it out on TRAIN DAY

  • @Joshuajlawn At least there's now a miniature live steam replica of a Cab Forward that runs today. That brings it all back. It's just way smaller than the real thing.

  • Some Cab Forwards have awesome whistles like 4274. But Cab Forwards look bizarre.

  • Those thing are the Coolest and the strangest Steam i ahve ever seen i know why they did the cab forward but its just so odd and what i want to know is did one of these ever double head with a Big Boy or Challenger? Problay not seeing how they were still seperate Roads at that time

  • This past year I visited Sacto to see the only surviving cab forward. This engine was without doubt perfection of engineering and purpose. If there ever was an engine that deaerved to be run again, the 4294 should be that engine. One can only dream.

  • I believe 4274 is on display at the California Railroad Museum in Sacramento. This locomotive is HUGE!

  • @Kahless02 Well, at least you can see the Union Pacific Challenger 3985, running in person. Challengers look a lot like Cab Forwards only with more wheels and the locomotive, facing the other way.

  • A question: these being 4-8-8-2's, larger wheel config. than the UP Challenger class loco's. Both Challengers and Big Boy's had to be articulated engines between the two sets of main traction drivers. But the SP Cab Forward doesn't appear to be articulated. Was it? If not, why not? How did it manage to get around the existing curves that required the big UP's to be articulated? Thanks for any info on this question!

  • @Cyclist051 Actuialy, I do believe that these massive engines are indeed articulated locomotives.

  • Wow - fabulous locomotive. I didn't know of it. And this is a 4-8-8-2? Meaning 4 under the (forward) cab? Or was it listed as a 2-8-8-4? So it must have been articulated, yes? This si pretty darn close to a Big Boy scale loco. Wheel configuration is larger than Challenger's.  Impressive!! The power is just awesome.

  • 4294 is currently sitting at the California State Railroad Museum only one left I believe. Good new is 4294 has been designated a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark so she's not going anywhere soon.

  • Close. A 4-8-8-2. They were the only locomotive of that wheel arrangement. This is truly an awesome video. The cabforwards were long gone before my time, but these videos will keep them alive for years to come.

  • No, she really is a 4-8-8-2. It has a four wheel leading truck under the cab, with two, eight wheels sets of drivers, with a two wheel trailing truck. Since the cab is designated as the front, the four wheel truck is considered leading. Take a good look by doing a Google Image search.

  • I just got an HO scale cab forward today, it's an AC-11, just like 4274, but it's number is 4272.

  • Very cool, I love the cab forward design. I know U.P. has rebuilt a lot of the older diesels (DD-40, E8 etc.) and runs them on excursion trains. Unfortunately there are so many environmental a##holes out there this day and age, it makes even more difficult to run steam locomotives.

  • I say environmentalists are the least troublesome factor. What really makes it difficult to run steam locos today is cost, maintanence, and permission from other railroads. That's just how I see it. I could worry less about tree huggers than anything else. BTW this vid's awesome!

  • I sure one of the SP Cab-forwards could run again. It could run excursions like SP 4449.

  • There is only one left, and I asked the museum that owns her, they would not restore her now because the Union Pacific probably would not let her run on there track (the Southern Pacific might have), and I am willing to bet they want to keep the 3985 the largest right now, so the cab-forward will just sit for now, but hopefully not forever.

  • As I recall, the drivers were balanced for 40 mph. Can anyone verify that?

  • Thank you soooo much for this video. As a young boy in the '40's I used to watch these awesome machines, belching coal black smoke hundreds of feet into the air, coming from Altamont Pass through the Dumbarton cutoff on their way to San Fransisco pulling 100 car trains. Those massive engines were literally alive, but they succumed to an accountant with a pen. (sigh)

  • With this hole oil shortage steam might just make a come back, mush more economical to run if you ask me. A steam switcher (0-6-0) had just as much poser as a modern locomotive, more power and just a little bit more fuel needed. Long live steam!

  • Believe it or not, no. The sound is not dubbed. Videos Rails does not dub their sound. They used top on the line video cameras that they had at the time.

  • Hmmm, not sure if you'd like this beast right outside your house. You'd need new foundations every few years, LoL. But yes a very impressive sight. 2 years after this video was filmed, the loco was scrapped. Absolute madness. A decision taken by accountants no doubt.

  • It was oil-fired. Pressurized fuel-oil was piped from the tender to the firebox.
