  • I hate statistics that say a condition is extremely rare. To the person who has the condition it is 100%. People are all different and deserve to be treated as individuals. Generalisations are just that, generalisations. It is the differences amoungst us that make us strong.

  • it's weird because there's a cartoon just like this called simone, which is on another planet, and all people on this planet are female up till the age of 17 when they decide what sex they want to be, it didn't seem realistic until watching this video.

    "Hermaphrodite" as a general term for Intersex is deprecated. It's inaccurate. Insulting too.

    Now there are a few, a very few, IS people who are Hermaphrodites in a technical sense: that is, they have both ovarian and testicular tissue. Appearance can vary. I'm not saying anything's *completely* impossible, but it's really very unlikely that someone has "both sets". Some with CAH have a clitoris so large that it's capable of penetrative sex though, plus a vagina. Most don't.

    Someone has to. I'm a very private person, but .. my situation couldn't exactly be hidden. Too many eye-witnesses to it happening. So I tried to make a virtue of necessity.

    Natalie didn't have to. She's the brave one.

    Hopefully now people are aware of the issue, I can now slink back into relative personal obscurity, and as normal a life as is possible under the circumstances.

    It's a bit like being a Cylon. "We walk amongst you". :-)

  • Hi Zoe, Can i just ask you a question if no-one else already has. With becoming female did you tend to become female in every other way i.e did your feelings change about your sexuality as well. I mean I can imagine it would considering your hormonal changes but was just wondering - also were you born with female anatomy? - I dont think the clip made it clear unless i missed it - like a womb or female genitalia? Thanks am very interested :)

    My external genitalia was masculinised. I have what may be a hysterectomy scar, various bits of "anmalous tissue" were removed from my abdomen when I was 20, along with my gallbladder.

    The records have been lost as to what exactly was taken out, but it could have only been scraps of tissue anyway.

    My gender identity has always been female (I picked the name Zoe at age 10), but until 2005 I was essentially asexual.

    It can be for many, yes. Of course, if you meet Mr or Ms Right, then they may not worry too much about the anomalous anatomy.

    You may face legal difficulties getting married though - in some jurisdictions, some IS people are forbidden from doing that, one of the side-effects of the anto-gay laws many places have.

  • i hate this show, mostly because the hosts annoy me, there just a bunch of uni undergrads who have no understanding of the real world, like the segment about 100 Aus. troops that got paid like 2 grand less than what they should... who cares it was like 100 guys who werent on the front line, dont get me wrong their job isnt any less important but really the fuss they made out of it was a joke. Why not do a story on the good work they do over there???

  • OK, it complicated my life a lot. It certainly hasn't been easy, and there are all sorts of continuing medical issues. I'll never look pretty, that's pretty obvious. But I can now take a bath without wanting to burst into tears.

    Others are content with their lot. IS people vary as much as non-IS people do.

    Freaks trying to be normal? Nope. No hope of that. Normality is over-rated anyway. Unusual People trying to be, well, just unusual people, yes, that's true. *shrug* What else should we do?

    Remember, I was diagnosed as a "mildly" intersexed male. If the only thing wrong is having that bit missing or atrophied, that's "mild". Though a guy might not see it that way.

    Look up Wikipedia on "undervirilised fertile male syndrome" and "mictopenis"..

  • kennylipiat - "sexing the body" by anne fausto-sterling puts it at 1.7%, one in 60, based on meta-studies, but having a very broad definition of Intersex. By the narrowest possible definition, requiring both testicular and ovarian tissue to be present, it's one in a few thousand.

  • EinDose - Natalie's symptoms would be classed as "overt" not minor. Most people who are IS have far less obvious symptoms, some only detectable by a Laboratory.

  • If the symptoms are as minor as Natalie's, I'd be inclined to believe it. Minor symptoms most, of course, but one in one hundred sounds right.

    I personally hate Hungry Beast because the show has no idea what it wants to be. Pieces like this are okay, but honestly seems... a bit pointless. And honestly these are probably the most tolerable kinds of pieces they do. Better than contradicting themselves within two minutes.

    I didn't deserve it - to me it was a miracle.

    I picked the name "Zoe" in 1968 you see,

    when I thought I'd have a female puberty.

    Others, transsexual women, those who

    were not able to cope and *had* to

    transition, deserved this blessing more

    than I did.

    No, why do you ask? And you assume that I ever had one in the first place. Certainly my genitalia was masculinised before the change - just incompletely so.

    After the change, it was a mess that required surgical reconstruction.

    Now I look normal according to my Ob/Gyn.

    Maybe I should mention that the conception of my son took technical help. Syringes to extract gametes etc.

    And I'm no more in the habit of discussing my genitalia than anyone else is - so have said about all I'm going to on the subject, sorry.
