This is a magnificent song, and it's nice to relate it to anyone's childhood. You can read the poem in different ways, but I like to read them as a (self)portrait...
The tactful cactus by your window - Surveys the prairie of your room - The mobile spins to its collision - Clara puts her head between her paws - They've opened shops down West side - Will all the cacti find a home - But the key to the city - Is in the sun that pins the branches to the sky
Thanks a lot for this beautiful vid!!! Those curls are very funny indeed...me and my boyfriend had them too at that time, I think everybody had them. It did cost a lot btw to have them made...
I enjoyed every one of his looks and personas, and I haven't found a song I haven't liked, i'm discovering each song slowly so I don't go through all the albums too quick. Hunky dory seems to be my favorite so far
Loved the images. However, the song is a Mick Ronson showcase - a far more subtle and delicate use of tone and plain picking than was usual. As the title suggests, the lines are a poem backed by a fairly sketchy piano arrangement (and obviously played by The Man, as Ronson or Wakeman would have been far more proficient), allowing Ronno to express his sensitive side. Brilliant.
This is such a beautiful song; melancholy, it makes me sad, but its so fabulous. This is a piece of art, so is the whole Hunky Dory album; theres not one single bad song on it. Loved it as a kid and love it even more now as a middleaged adult!
ok thanks, any idea when this photo was taken then? it's just that, at first glance, i thought the guy on the left was bowie; same hairline & very similar profile.
jeez he was a skinny bastard when he was young! possibly the best poet of the times, better than dylan imo. more relevant & succinct. (dunno if i spelt that last word right!?) my favourite song since this whole era (67-74) is 7 years in tibet.
There would be good music today, but every artist with any sort of potential does not want to become mainstream, and therefore becomes 'indie." It's miserable. This is why I listen to music. Does everyone else to 1960-1994 as being the "life" of music?
1994 is bang on. Since then the share holders will not allow investment in anything new. Have you noticed that all mainstream releases sound like other songs? The share holders own the songs being recycled and they make profits keeping pop music the same. Chart music is for 8 to 13 year old children; has been since 1994. It has to be simple and crap from now on; except on-line.
reminds me; CNET used to have a great selection of new artists in all genres (2005-8) and so easy to search by region I'm sure I've been to Sweden and remixed some of it's artists, but it closed down and I lost the plot. The internet is the best place to find new stuff, or old stuff we didn't know existed. Some good tunes on 'noisehead'. Bad music is just predictable. Rock'n'Roll caused riot squads at the start and warehouse raves caused riot squads at the end. Original music lives again on line
There is still good music today. It is just musicians like Soulja Boy that make it seem like the apocalypse of music. Even in the golden age of music there was shitty songs and musicians.
Australian music is doing pretty well. I do agree though that Bowie is one of a kind.
Hey !!! check out 'Jason Ninnis' @ noisehead. He has a very Bowie-like voice and seems to be influenced by Bowie's early 60's stuff. He has that 'searching for a style' sound that Bowie charmed us with and I must admit it is fun to listen to his accent. Sometimes it's like discovering a new Bowie album of unreleased songs from the cutting room floor. As you might have figured from previous comments, I'm 'ain't' easy to please. Check him out; I'd love to hear what another Bowie fans thinks.
Bowie: yet another genius who would have been told to give up if he was on the x-factor. I feel sorry for todays kids; they have nothing but watered down U.S chart soul R'n'B clones; pointless junk which will never be remembered the way we remember and still thrill to hear Bowie. Music evolved and developed for hundreds of years and each change was a thrill for each generation...then it all stopped changing around 1994; thanks to the shareholders.
Have heart; there is good 'new' music on the net which will never be heard on TV and radio, like in the good old decades. It takes some finding though and it is mostly modern genre and sub sub genre (invented names for the same thing) you might find something on the 'noisehead' site because of it's standard genres. For good modern style you might try googling 'DJ 100' , HIS 'MONSTER MASH UPS' are choice showcase selections of the best in modern style unsigned music from CNET before it shut down.
@pq4u2 i understand your sentiment but looking at history of the tv or any show medium there have always been talent shows, folk like bowie or even folk not at that level, cause it's a high level, make their own way. it's right wing politics vs left wing, how many bands can the republicans of america get to endorse their elections? right wing media love us to enjoy the freak show and we love it too because a university education is too expensive for the freaks. bowie et al seen the irony
That's Bowie on the piano. Rick Wakeman played only the complicated parts; 'Life On Mars?', 'Fill Your Heart' - Bowie played 'Oh, You Pretty Things' too.
This one is quite easy to play on piano. Mick Ronson on guitar & Bowie's vocals are superb.
Don't forget that this happens to be - from my humble point of view - David Bowie's Claw of the Lion! And by the way, it's Rick Wakeman on the piano, awesome! - Tobbe in Sweden -
Thank you so much Rosa, love the vids, I am a fan, I have seen him a few times live in the 80's and I wore my red shoes :)
I adored him before though, I think Space Oddity was the first song to make me think about music and I bought all his singles with my pocket money, Keep up the great work Rosa :)
During the 60s, his hair was shortish and really curly, and he grew it out so around 1969, 1970 they sort of morphed into waves, because of something to do with the weight of the hair I think. Then he got it cut short for Ziggy, before letting it grow in the mid - late 70s. And I know from experience that if you have curly hair, get it cut short, then grow it out again, it won't come back the same.
In my late teens I had almost perfectly straight, long hair; now I'm 25 and it's always rather wavy when I grow it out. A friend of mine who is a licensed cosmetologist (no less pretentious way of putting it; she doesn't do hair for a living right now) says this kind of change is common for men even into their 20's.

The Twilight Sad, Interpol, Arcade Fire, Fleet Foxes to name only a very few.
