This plane might be all weather and long range - But it has a major downside that i am surprised the Russians have yet to correct. its Contra-rotating props make so much noise because as they spin the tips of the props near the speed of sound if not exceed it - creating so much nose that they can be tracked using Sonar stations used to detect and track Submarines not planes.
@3nasacova The TU-95 uses four Samara Kuznetsov NK-12 MP turboprop engines, I cant get any info on horsepower, but i know they are pretty dang good for what they are. still, i don't see any Russians tracking the B-52 on sonar :P
@Oatmealism Erm...huh? The "noise" factor of the Tu-95 engines is one of the many bizarre cases of U.S. criticism of Soviet equipment that become established as "truth", and Western non-sense mantras. First: tell me since fucking when in modern-day warfare, is noise detection a factor in "detecting" or "tracking" enemy aircraft. Second: if used in combat today the enemy will NEVER see the Tu-95, it can launch missiles hundreds of kilometers away from its target.
A good job, indeed.

@Oatmealism Correct. This plane certainly was a solution to the given problem. The problem at that time for the Russians was the B-52.
Nobody ever thought these guys were serious about pitting a propeller driven plane up against the fabled B-52.
But that is exactly what they did.
When I try to find out the actual horsepower those engines on the Bear make I still get blocked. Like I can't figure that out for myself.
I can use weight and speed to get close to the truth though, right?

Möchte man auf den ersten Blick meinen.
Die Maschinen machen mit ihren außergewöhnlichen Propellertriebwerken sogar Düsenstrahl-Bombern in der gleichen Klasse konkurrenz.
