  • Stephen Fry saying "lol" is a fantastic thing.

  • Pale imitation of Oscar Wilde unfortunately. He's nowhere near as talented as the media consensus suggests. Have any of you actually read his novels? The Liar is especially bad. He's capable of dishing out criticism but when somebody dared to do criticise him in Twitter, he threatened to leave the site like a petulant child. A couple of bad reviews and he tries to commit suicide!

Fry is a stupid man's idea of what an intelligent person sounds like. Far too much in love with his own voice

  • @Bastiat90 Perhaps you should learn how to construct a sentence with proper syntax free of the many dangling participles in your post, then you may warrant criticizing a genius like Mr Fry. Semantics isn't the measure of intelligence, so i'll leave my criticism of the utter drivel you've posted at that.

What is important, is to have profound cognitive faculties and critical thinking, whilst conveying these thoughts with brilliant eloquence, which is prevalent with Mr Fry and lacking in you.

  • Once again, a denizen of youtube is there to prick the balloon of my pomposity!

Can you relay any of Mr Fry's original thoughts or ideas?

  • @Bastiat90 I agree take away the posh accent and there's not much substance there in anything he says and does. Or at least nothing that your everyday average person couldn't say or do.

  • 3:28 who's the novelist? Evelyn......??

  • @bagwa5 Evelyn Waugh :)

  • @icecoldlily arigato gozaimasu!

  • @bagwa5 Evelyn Waugh. Best known for writing "Brideshead Revisited"

  • @bagwa5 Evelyn Waugh is one of the grestest novelists of all time. I, for one, love his novels.

  • lol, bebo

  • This man is incredible. I'd love to be able to be the kind of person who deserves as much respect as Stephen Fry.

  • the 15 year old of today can dis your mum better nowadays too

  • "LOL"

    hahaha

  • I want to hug him.

  • this guy is hypnotic, i can't stop listening =O

  • My youtube comrades, I love you all. However bad your comments may ever be. Let us troll forever.

  • Hey #UN#,

This was a pretty cool vid.

  • Now if you open your Poppit....

  • What Fry says towards the end of this 1st part is very true, and it's related to man's evolutionary propensity towards risk taking, seen all through history, even when that meant a great deal of sacrifice, in the forms of time spent, resources, or even human lives. A good example is the risks (see Japan) of maintaining a thermonuclear reactor for energy purposes.

  • what does he say at 1:06 ? and why?

  • @ProfsrAJ

he said "amo amas amat amamus amatus amant"

which is the different conjugated forms of the word "love" in latin. Fucking noob

  • @Fredman5551 Thanx. English is my second language, so I guess I'm a "fucking noob" Cheers to geniuses like u.

  • @ProfsrAJ

English could be youre 16th language, doesnt matter because he spoke in Latin, not english. nub

  • @Fredman5551 So far up your own ass, really. Just back off of people. You're here watching this video and you seem not to get the point at all. Just because you know Point A and someone doesn't, you think you're somehow superior. There's a huge chance you don't know many things this other person knows.

  • @LeftyHandedGuns

Your defending a guy who got mad after he was called a "noob" on the internet. I'll let you think that one through nubcakes

  • @Fredman5551 I want to clarify something I thought was rather obvious here: I'm defending a principle--one for which you've no respect. ...uh, I'm finished here now.

  • @LeftyHandedGuns

Telling someone on the internet they have no respect. lol. you might as well piss in a bucket of piss, youll get farther with that.

    good day noobsicle

  • Fantastic! Absolutely brilliant monologue. Love hearing this man speak!!

  • Here is the exact kind of video infromation I'm in need of, really appreciate your help

  • How great would it be to have Stephen as your lecturer, I could listen to him for hours.

  • the interviewer is cracking up. Be so hard to talk to this guy witha straight face.

  • Inspiring.

  • 43,100 people have watched this. I think that's damn beautiful.

  • not on your nelly!

  • i'm so jealous of the 12 year old who had the chance to speak to him :(

  • Beauty and wisdom par excellence.

  • Like anything, the more important something becomes to your routine, the more you rely on it for day to day activity. I like my computer, but I could never see myself on facebook or twitter or anything. My youtube profile is the only thing I have like that, and it doesn't have my life splashed across it.

  • What a well refined opinion he has!

  • i'm 20 and love stephen on most things, i must say though that i am not as optimistic as him about this. all the evidence suggests that our generation's concentration is lacking in the extreme, bombarded, as we are by constant information. anyone else find they can't walk along without music, for example? of course he's right that people can do both things though and i generally consider the internet to be a positive thing (clearly lol)

  • I'm a YouTube junkie and I can conjugate my first declension Latin verbs no problem!

Stephen Fry needs to marry me.

  • There are many social animals besides humans who need connection: pack animals, social insects, schooling fish, etc.

As far as chat-speak is concerned, I do think it spills from casual chat into more formal, serious areas of expression. Many modern books are filled with obvious grammatical and spelling errors, and formal workplace communication has suffered as well.

  • god i love him, SOO AWESOME

  • Stephen, sequence your eloquence/common sense genes, harvest them, propagate them, then sell the bastards. I'd buy them by the bucket to distribute to all. This may be not so far fetched.

  • Does anybody know how where this interview is from?

  • Thank you for this. Brilliant!

  • Does anyone think he's reading notes on his lap?

On second thought, of course he is.

  • @Keracher94 No

  • @citizenkeane Well, he's obviously got some notes. He's not a god.

  • @Keracher94 I'm sure he knew in advance that he'd be talking about social media, but notes I doubt. If you're aware of who he is you'd be aware that he does interviews and speaking engagements constantly, don't underestimate his articulacy.

  • @citizenkeane Calm down boyo

  • @Keracher94 Okay, dunno how you get a lack of calmness from my response. I'll agree to disagree. Four responses is my limit for youtube comment responses, you're probably 16 for all I know. Good Luck!

  • @citizenkeane No, no. One more. I just think its condescending, and arrogant to assume I don't know who he is. It came across as smug.

  • @Keracher94 Oh, but you are mistaken. Stephen Fry is definitely a god. ;)

  • Does anyone think he's reading notes on his lap?

  • @Keracher94 And No

  • Stupid people don't seem to get those with any intelligence , as many of the morons here.

  • Within the space of a few years, Stephen Fry has downgraded himself from comedy legend (ie on blackadder or a bit of fry and laurie) into an histrionic and melodramatic old fool who seemingly clings onto his ever growing string of sycophantic pseudo-intellectual wannabes in order to boost his self worth. Even a quick glance at his regular self-indulgent dramatics on 'twitter' can prove this.

  • @jbs4em oh look, bitching about somehow far more talented than yourself. How original.

Any reason for your inane whining?

  • @Kaelisra440 Don't worry I already said good old Stephen Fry is a highly talented comic actor. But the fact is that he is (or has become) a prima donna. A man posted on twitter: 'I adore and admire Stephen but I do find his tweets a bit boring(sorry stephen!!)' and Frys response is to moan and then exclaim he is quitting the site because he was insulted. Thousands of people told him they 'loved' him and that they were 'worried' - and he returned. He did very very similar a week or so ago too.

  • Is it weird I like the way he says 'Hmm' whilst listening to someone else? It shows pure care and concentration, that he's really focused on what they're saying.

As always, agree with him 100% - Although I might be slightly biased, as I am a teenager who enjoys learning about the english language, I was brought up with the internet and I do have friends I met online.

  • he could talk about meat marinating and it would be amazing

  • stephan fry is amazing

  • I wouldn't call Stephen Fry a household name. The only people aware of him are mostly fans. Compare that to someone like Tom Cruise. Even people who live under rocks know of him. I'm not saying Stephen isn't famous, I'm just saying he isn't a household name.

  • @lisambofoh he's only famous in britain...... hardly any one has even heard the name in north america (at least the ages 25 and under) and if they have its cause of hugh laurie

  • @lisambofoh He's a household name in Britain, you do have to remember there is a world outside of the US.

  • @totallymargeaux Household names in one country doesn't really exist anymore since the invention of the internet.

  • @lisambofoh Yes, actually it does still exist. Each country still has their own entertainment which isn't internationally known. It's just easier to find these things.

  • Watching him talk about kids make me think it's a shame he never had kids, I reckon he would have made a great father, also when, horrible thought, he's gone, none of his genes will have been passed on. Great shame.

C'mon Stephen, you must now at least one woman happy to take your turkey baster for the good of mankind! ;)

  • @UKWiLFreD68 not really

  • i love how Fry detractors talk about his self-importance. what they've got mixed up is that they think he's being self-important when in actual fact it's that there's a large amount of people who think he is important.

if you've followed fry before he became a household name, you'd know he's always been like this, its just he's never been asked outright before now.

  • If I hear one more inaccurate definition of "what separates us from the animals", I'm going to spew.

  • wasnt the thought that humans are social animal an aristotles basis of thought?

  • @jin455 Almost ALL animals are social, i.e. have a need for affiliation.

  • i didn't even know we were called generation web

  • hehe "squelched" - not the most intelligent comment i could have made, but it's just such a wonderful word.

  • I like him and agree with a lot of what he says, however I do know people who social networking has had a negative effect on. I've known couples who spend their evenings sat next to each with a laptop typing away and speaking very little to each other. Also people who feel the need to broadcast all their thoughts to the world (on facebook), without thinking about what they're saying. Not everyone is as educated as Mr Fry, so can't use the technology as intelligently as he does.

  • @kevvie100 And those would probably be the same couples who in years past would be reading separate copies of the newspaper beside each other or something similar.

  • @Nakashii I know what you mean, but still I've seen people take it to more of an extreme than that. The Internet is different to a paper, as you are able to search constantly, there's always "something else" to read. It's very easy to become hooked on it.

As long as people have self-control it shouldn't be a problem, but self-control is hard for many.

  • Lul, Stephen said "Lul"

  • @equallyeasilyfuqyou

    Its probably the accent

  • fry is god fry is god fry is god fry is god AMEN!!!!

  • lovely fellow

  • Fry is just being the lovely optimist that he is. He's probably right about the Internet though. But I'd say it's not the Internet but video/computer games that have toasted the brains of younger people.

  • I second the video description.

  • i'd love to know someone with such passion.. people are so dull

  • I love your vid! Good work. Check mine too on my channel.

  • I love connecting with like-minded people. Add me!

  • Sage, fatherly and wise. There is no trace of pedantry or self importance, only a desire to share knowledge. A active campaigner for charity, rights, promoter of musicians and literature and speaking out on injustice he is a well rounded human being. This man for Prime Minister!

  • Wow. I have wished I could talk to him, and hang out with him for ages, but now I realize I would sound like a total brain dead idiot next to him. He would probably be thinking, 'What the hell is she mentally deficient?'

  • @VamLoveAndKisses But that's the lovely thing about Fry. He WOULDN'T. He'd sit and talk with everyone if he could. The major problem is that there's so many millions of us "Small Frys" that he doesn't have the time.

  • there is something about this guy that seems to be oozing undercover agent.

  • amo, amas, amat, amamus, amatis, amant. I'm fifteen. Yay me.

  • I love his frank way of delivering his knowledge. He doesn't do it self-importantly, he does it in a way that he understands other people might not know it; and he never EVER acts like he might have a better insight into it just because he already knows about it. He seems like the kind of man who would always be interested in others' opinions, far above his own thinkings. :)

  • stephen frys awesome intellect often gets masked by his awesome humour, its a shame, he is awesome at both

  • @mikesomething

I disagree - as an over-educated smart ass my self I can attest that one reason I enjoy his humour so much is how it is so much informed by his intellect

  • A modern day Renaissance man and a true philosopher! Thank goodness for Stephen Fry!

  • He is actually good sociologist too, seems to me. I am pleasantly surprised for s.t. he talks a bit too conservative for my taste. It is very important (and adorable) to be openminded, aspecially in higher age.

  • Stephen always makes things simple i love it :D

  • The more I see of him, the more I love him.

  • One of the best videos ive seen on Youtube, ever. This should be shown to all parents, adults. To open there mind and stop putting a brick wall up for there kids because it's obvious, the more you stop a child from doing something in there adolescent years, the grater chance they will go ahead and do it. So why destroy something they are trying to build by using technologies. I personally have learnt more using technology, then I have from normal standards such as school.

    Great video!

  • hes brilliant and i don't think hes up himself atall. hes lost a lot of weight aswell, good on him

  • absolute genius.

  • Someone else said my thoughts exactly. He's so intelligent it's incredibly scary.

  • i could listen to him talk all day as well, what a guy.

him and david attenborough are the only people ill listen to on TV any more.

    64

  • 'squelched' woooow He can even make death sound less sucky :)

  • Adore him. :) always have. :) charmingly flawed, and so very human. :)

  • @Filidhe 'charmingly flawed'... love that phrase Filidhe, t'is the genius :)

  • His English is the best english I ever heard...)

  • oh stephen. i wish you werent gay just so we can get together and procreate. can you imagine how smart that child would be?

  • I love him. I am pretty sure I legitimately love him. Too bad he doesn't play for my team.

    :)

  • He plays for my team ;)

  • I like like Mr Fry loads as well, I especially like Qi in which he is a very knowledgable host. The guests always come up trumps and all.

I think he has become the nations favourite academic.

  • @Rikkyhardo

The man also has a great sense of humour ; )

  • clever man.....

  • The man is a treasure.

  • Was going to listen to him in the background...I just cant. Love this Man he commands respect, so intelligent and is certainly not a background person. You just have to stop what your doing and enjoy his candid wisdom. :))

  • Skinny minnie! Stephen Fry looks fabulous!

  • great interview

  • Good gods, Stephen Fry is where it's at.

  • HURHURHUR

  • Goddamn, this guy is astute.

  • @Bellantoni

    Evelyn Waugh was the author

  • who's the novelist he mentioned at 3:26

  • @Bellantoni Evelyn Waugh

  • thou shall not question stephen fry

  • @radicalricky lol love that song, sounds like russell brandt

  • @radicalricky

Like hell you shall! He wouldn't like to have fans that cannot or will not think for themselves. That's his merit, he questions things that seem ' fixed' and 'true' and encourages you to do the same.

  • @radicalricky thats the 11th commandment as put down by Moses

  • I stand corrected :)

  • No, he isn't full of his own self academic importance. He knows what he's talking about, people ask him about it, and he answers them - no shame in that.

  • is this man the greatest briton? Maybe, that´s all I´m saying

  • @yatter1 No way, that title has to go to Isaac Newton!, Fry is up there though ;)

  • @crazyjedimindtrick But Asimov was russian

  • @yatter1 ??? I said Isaac Newton, not Isaac Asimov.

  • @crazyjedimindtrick Bugger, sorry about that

  • @gjhsu don't worry, most of us get it. there's a few people who don't but they're just missing out.

  • @gjhsu maybe you should read what he just said about women not liking sex the fucking idiot

  • 2:21 to 2:41 is very great-- but I think my favorite part was when he was talking about the 12 year old girl. I bet she screamed when she saw this.

  • Stephen Fry is the only guy on youtube who NEVER has negative comments. It's amazing how charming he is.

  • Stephen is such a lovely guy..and a true genius..great to know he is such a public figure and spokesman...he ranks as prob the all time great intellectuals and at the same time such a bl**dy common sense guy with real life values and feelings we can all relate and understand.....long live and speak..Stephen Fry!...a great guy!

  • Well, I do not need that much of the "connecting to others" thing. I am completely ok when I am alone. I ever crave to be alone most of the time. Sometimes when the need to "bond" arises and I go out among people, I usually am disappointed in the end. Most of the time is really difficult to squeeze out something constructive and knowledge-enlarging thing from most conversations. People has no ideas to share nowadays. If this lack of desire to bond makes me less human, so be it, I can bear that.

  • And yet you have felt the need to write this to people so that they can read it and understand your point of view and comment back. In a way is that not connecting or reaching out with humans to make a bond simply by expressing and opinion? If that sounds even the slightest bit rude it wasn't supposed to have been, just a thought.

  • Stephen Fry is wonderful..a great orator , and what a revelation, I had totally forgotten how in the past that so many were not allowed to communicate to the outside world..

  • Does anybody know on what online forums Stephen hangs out and discusses litterature?

  • just get him on twitter

  • Most refreshing and realistic interview I've seen in a while

  • Looking good Stephen x

  • Excellent.

  • actually my thumbs really do seem a bit messed up, and I didn't have internet at home till I was 10.

what interesting talk, though...what event is this from?

  • physical distance, yes, but you can't deny it is a way of connecting. When in history could you connect with others half the world away in live time?

  • Well said! I suggest we start an online forum, engage in chat room and start a facebook group damning isolation of the digital world. You've clearly made the first step with this online comment. If you don't like it go away

  • Wauw, he has really lost weight! He looks great.

  • where was this shown? is this part of a show?

  • Abosultely Genius.

  • thanks for this

  • stephen fry ftw, as always.

  • Great interview G, thanks!
