Black people were still being lynched in the South & Jim Crow was alive & well. Segregation was official in the South & unofficial in the North. Ugly racial stereotypes were everyday images. Racial tension & occasional violence were every where. eg: My father, a dark skinned Spaniard, was refused entrance on a public bus in N.J..

I find Shirley very entertaining because I grew up in a military family, and lived for many years in Gulfport, Mississippi, very close to where this charactor originates. After moving away, I had many black friends who just could NOT understand where I got my ideas about black colloquialisms and phrasing. Shirley Q has shown me as an adult that I was NOT crazy, I just had a very good memory of living by "the Guff" in "Guffport". To me, no different than affecting a "New Yawk" accent for show.
I would call this brown face,because it looks a little more natural except for the eyeshadow.Another distinction is that the comedian in question isn't saying things like" oh lordy",or intending to make black women look like house slaves or plantation workers which is mean.This is an example of one stereotype that is somewhat true but exaggerated slightly and this guy does a character called Betty Butterfeild a sort of mid-west looking fat white woman with religious conflict and societal woes.

@druidboy76 I agree that " Blacks" should be less sensitive. Shirley can be very funny and spot on. However,"Whites" need to be more sensitive. Just imagine if people of predominantly European ancestry had been dehumanized and consciously oppressed for 400 years and had their history hidden from them; don't you think they would be oversensitive as well? I happen to be of mixed race; so feel that I can pretty much judge white supremacy in all its hypocritical forms better than most. Some of my experiences were very traumatic and it took me a long time to get over. As a Jewish person you should have compassion towards minorities. Remember, your people were not considered " white" in Europe. In fact, the fascists believed that Jews were the same as me';" mulattoes".

@RustySurfer23 If you read my first post carefully, you would've noticed that I wrote that some of Shirley's stuff was funny. So obviously, I'm not that sensitive. I just feel that whites are always expecting people of color to be forgiving; but they can hold grudges forever! Also, Jews always had their original religion and culture intact regardless of their experiences. I feel that Jewish people should be identified with us, because the Bible clearly states we're related. I love Jesus; a Jew.

@Almond2000 Please know that there is literally zero sound historical evidence for any of the fairy tales in the bible regarding Jewish people as slaves in Egypt, that the bible was re-written at the request of a king to reflect his own views on law some 1600 years after the supposed existence of Christ, and that the jesus story has been retold almost verbatim for thousands of years prior to christianity. You should try picking up any other credible book to see what it clearly states.

Sigh, now THAT'S a stereotype. It's comedy, and he's using a stereotype to joke about a stereotype. It's something that can be taken the wrong way only if you can't laugh at the STEREOTYPE. I'm black AND white from a BLACK family (white father left as a baby) and it's not offensive to me. It's because I can laugh at Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy play "white" people, which is a stereotyping way of expressing a form of comedy, and laugh.
Get a sense of humor. Dave Chappelle was the best example.

I find Shirley very entertaining because I grew up in a military family, and lived for many years in Gulfport, Mississippi, very close to where this charactor originates. After moving away, I had many black friends who just could NOT understand where I got my ideas about black colloquialisms and phrasing. Shirley Q has shown me as an adult that I was NOT crazy, I just had a very good memory of living by "the Guff" in "Guffport". To me, no different than affecting a "New Yawk" accent for show.

I would call this brown face,because it looks a little more natural except for the eyeshadow.Another distinction is that the comedian in question isn't saying things like" oh lordy",or intending to make black women look like house slaves or plantation workers which is mean.This is an example of one stereotype that is somewhat true but exaggerated slightly and this guy does a character called Betty Butterfeild a sort of mid-west looking fat white woman with religious conflict and societal woes.

Pretty much exactly how I feel about it, though I'm not gay. Part of the fun of being American is making fun of each other's stereotypes, so long as they are sensitively done and not meant to hurt people, it's ok, though the line between extremely studied humor and cruelty is unfortunately very thin. There's a person on youtube who makes "shirley q liquor" videos with a towel on his head. He is a talentless moron, so it comes off as simple racism.
