  • 3 people drive automatics

  • iluminate me!!!! you have a dog box,but you still shifting up and down like the normal "H" shape shift?,,isnt suppoust to shift down to increase and up to decrease gears?

  • @serchmarc I think your talking about a "sequential" gearbox

  • @Gonthor1000 the sequential box is actually first called in the racing area as a dog box,,here i dont know why is called a dog box,if i can see the normal movement

whats the difference whats the gain? whats the improvement? you dont pedal clutch?

  • @serchmarc da

  • @serchmarc incorrect a dog box was originally used in trucks where they didnt have clutches... due to the fact that if you fucked up it woudl drive like a dog xD

  • Why does he use the clutch in 3rd gear all the other gears he doesn't use the clutch

  • what excactly is a dog box?

  • @elitecssplayer~ It lets u shift REAL quick. But its not as SMOOTH as a normal synchromesh gearbox.

  • WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOUTUBE!!!!! EVERYTHING IS FREEZING UP ON ME!

  • I want one so bad for my Legacy GT

  • so why would u want a dog box if u cant quick shift it?

  • @xxnissansilviaxx~ no.... u can shift quick. Thats the whole point of a dog box!

  • money well spent on ppg:-)

  • this look like so much fun driving this!!!

  • I put a PPG T56 iin my circuit race car and it is AWESOME!

  • Sold! I want one

  • so how do you drive a dog box...? sounds like he was just trying to sell the product.

  • @auomauom you wern't listening ... were you.

  • @187maker A change in gear set, be it dog, synchro or any other type of engagement shouldn't hold any type of bearing on clutch life... it is the driver and his/her driving style/technique that determines the life of a clutch.

In most cases the most damage to a clutch is when people ride the clutch or dump the clutch at high revs.

  • wonder how long a clutch would last with one ?

  • so dogboxes dont have synchros

  • are there straight cut gears with synchromesh? to get the great sound and strength but to be able to use it for street driving all of the time?

  • For referance, i paid about $6000 (AUS) for the straight cut WRX synchro set. The dogbox set would be around the $8500-$9000 mark. Then add ~$1000 for installation, and a little extra for shipping costs. Made in Adelaide, South Australia. Extremely happy with mine, Pfitzner was always going to be first choice. Good work Simon!

  • im liking that

  • PPG Gearsets

    the best for sure

  • "flat shift" is when u DONT lift off the throttle!!

  • @marek0086 It is not exactly like that. You can either briefly lift off the throttle to take load off the gears so that it can disengage and then engage the the next gear OR you can have sensors which sense when you move the gear stick and it automatically briefly stop injection/ignition for the same reason. In either case you don't touch the clutch.

  • @YourFatClownAss~ i didnt say anything about the clutch!!

  • @marek0086 No, but that's what flat shifting is.

  • @YourFatClownAss~ flat-shifting is when u dont take your foot off the throttle!

  • Comment removed

  • @YourFatClownAss~ I shift my motorbike at full throttle all the time!... now you go figure how im able to do that, buddy.

  • @marek0086 well clearly you are a wizard

  • aaagghh i must have on for my evo !!!

  • ^ plus there too noisy! lol..they also only use spur gears for reverse because its cheaper than using helical since reverse isnt used at high speeds or for long.

  • it would be great if he could tell us WTF a 'Dog Box' is!!!!

  • @nicbarrow okay, i'll be nice enough to tell you. A dog box is a gearbox where there are no synchros to synchronise the gear speeds, so you have to match them by yourself. They're much stronger but are usually harder to drive.

  • 2 vehicles, not 3.............

  • @nisantiskyline 3, he didn't show the 3rd one in the beginning.

  • @nisantiskyline he showed 3, a holden, skyline and suubby

  • @madbob222222 ,sure sure buddy

  • @nisantiskyline poor troll, very poor.

  • @madbob222222 poor troll hahaha, what drugs u on......

  • @nisantiskyline im ending here :P cause you suck xD, tah tah.

  • @madbob222222 love u 2

  • @maersklandro maybe dogboxes aren't in OEM cars cause there really noisy?

think about want your saying first bro.

  • @maersklandro~ hey you're talking shit. Helical gears are not stronger than spur!

  • @marek0086 The straight gears result in a stronger transmission, but the gears are not any stronger - the difference is that straight gears only result in radial stresses, where helical gears develop axial stresses as well which require bearings to handle "thrust" loading. Helical cut gears would be stronger than straight cut gears of the same width as more than just one tooth will be transferring the torque.

  • @batardsalamano~ First of all, is your username a type of bread??

It depends on the "pitch" of the helical teeth as to how many teeth will actually mesh at the one time. And they wear out quicker dont they?... as helical teeth have a much smaller surface-contact-area with each other compared to straight cut?

  • @marek0086 Nope, not a type of bread.

I've not heard about helical gears wearing out faster though I'm fairly sure helical gears have a higher surface contact area. This would explain why one of the other advantages of straight cut is lower power loss through the transmission - less gear contact swipe area (in addition to lower rotating mass that allows quicker rotational speed change). With proper lube neither should wear gears faster than the other.

  • @batardsalamano~ nah no way man, straight cut gears have more cantact area at any one time.

  • @marek0086- Nah, straight cut gears only have one tooth touching at a time, helical have 2-3, making helical stronger, the reason people use straight cut is less rolling resistance = less drag through the gearbox, Then the straight cut are made stronger to then be also stronger than helical gears

  • @MethanolHead94~ U dont know what the heck you're talking about!... spur gears in a car-gearbox will have at least 2 teeth meshing at the same time!

  • @marek0086 umm..its just what a Mechanical teacher that rebuilds gearboxs that told me & a whole class that, & has been a mechanic for over like 30 years...

  • @MethanolHead94~ First of all, it all depends on the tooth density on the gear (tooth-size to gear-circumference ratio). Its this that determines how many teeth will actually be meshing.

  • @marek0086 Yea i ment like tooth density equal to helical gears, but then its increased to make spur gears stronger

  • @MethanolHead94 Actually a gear box with straight cut gears is going to be stronger every time. The only reason helical gears are used is because they are quieter. By there very nature the angled gears impose a side load, necessitating a stronger, and therefore heavier case. The gears are trying to slide away from each other in a side ways motion, but the assembly is quieter. Some modern manual shift trucks still use a noisy straight cut assembly for first, and reverse.

  • @pattyaaron~ u didnt explain it right. The gears are trying to slide away from each other in a AXIAL direction (thrust loading.... forward and backward direction). Where as straght cut gears ONLY exert RADIAL load (side load... no need for thrust bearings).

  • @marek0086 well, my explanation, was simplified, but accurate. I should have added that another advantage of the straight cut gears is it is possible to make a very strong gear box a bit more compact than one with helical gears...

  • @pattyaaron First of all, helicals are stronger. Secondly all side loads are eliminated by using double helical gears which are much stronger and quieter. You made a valid point about the sideloads on the casing, the gears are not stronger.Granted straight cut gearboxes like these are stronger than stock. Also the real reason straight cuts are used in racing is they are cheaper and easier to replace and machine. Which means you can swap out gear-sets with relative ease at the track.

  • @OBCblackhawk First of all I said straight cut gear boxes are stronger, and you can take that to the bank...

  • @maersklandro i think you shouldn't reproduce ,explain how it ruins the flywheel or the engine mounts , if you know how to drive a dogbox it wont jolt

  • @StarlightAUTOBODY

    Shock loading, of course.

Say you're up to 3500 rpm in first gear and you decide to shit up. You figure you don't need to use the clutch cause you've got a smart aleck dog engagement box.

So you simply chuck it in 2nd as fast as you can throw the shifter and the engine has to almost half its rpm basically instantly. It will shock load everything from the driveshafts to the mounts, belt tensioners.

The driveshafts will take most of the beating because of the gearing.

  • @maersklandro WTF crack are you smoking? Dogboxes aren't in OEM cars because 1) they are more expensive than a synchro box. and 2) it takes too much time and effort to fit a dogbox into all the cars the manufacturer is producing.

  • @StarlightAUTOBODY think about it would you put straight cut and dog in a civic? no its a family car, you need to think before you type

  • @StarlightAUTOBODY Why don't Corvettes or Ferraris have dog boxes? Why dont BMWs or Alfas?

Because they're shyte, that's why. But the plebs love'em.

  • @maersklandro SCary BMW E36 race car.O my god! damn fast type theat in the search bar dude, check it out

  • @maersklandro because old rich people drive corvettes, bmw are luxury and alpha is shit. they dont put the in factory cars because they are loud and unnecessary for driving around town at normal speed , you should just stop talking because are obviously an idiot

  • @maersklandro

Almost all race cars using sequential manual boxes or newer faster paddle shift, sequential automatic boxes. These g-boxes are not primary developed for daily driving. Also every reverse gear in all street cars are straight cut.

  • Good job on the vid, really informative.

  • You only use the clutch for taking off, or coming to a complete stop.

You can still use the clutch if you want a more "quieter" shift

  • Comment removed

  • Wish they showed his foot on the clutch because it's hard to see if and how he's using it.

FWIW, the gearset for a Honda K-series, is about US$4000 installed.

  • so... you dont have to push the clutch in?or you put it in a little bit?

  • @buhrrito only when you downshift/neutral I believe.

  • How much are they? Can't find a price anywhere!! I want one for my 94 supra

  • @joefo53 um.. how much are you willing to spend ? because there around 8k+

  • @joefo53 in the range of 3-7000€. and sequential around 12000€

  • @joefo53~ are u retarded?..... just send PPG an email!

  • @joefo53 go to titan motorsports i think its 8k

  • my favorite skyline ever.

  • That's a very good video, well done.

  • Thats awesome! Love your GTR. Great tutorial

  • How about revision? Do I need to renew it every 5000km like with other Gearboxes?

  • wish the price on these was just a little lower... they would sell a million of them

  • have a PPG dogbox in my 99 WRX, freaking awesome!

  • How much did you pay? I went to their website and you have to enquire about pricing, which I don't want to do unless I'm serious. Did you get the 5 speed group N rally set?
