Ditka was first, yes, but maybe even more so John Mackey was very much the mold out of which they took Kellen Winslow--big and fast, blocking, receiving, lining up in different locations, running deep routes, even returning kicks. KW was a great player, but he did not invent the TE as front-line receiver.
Let's forget he's impossible to cover one-on-one (especially in the end-zone and drags linebacker/safeties like rag dolls. The fact he's also one of the best blocking TEs in the league is also because of Brady.
Not a complete Tight End. More of a "big" wide receiver like Megatron. If they had to move him of the line of scrimmage so he could get a "free release", that says it all.
@ElCuloChulo i feel the reason hes on here is cuz he was beast but at the same time revolutionised the tight end position if it wasnt for him tight ends might still be blocking and never catching the ball
@MrKilluminati12 Wow, so he dropped a pass. That doesn't change the fact that Mie Ditka and NOT Kellen Winslow. Look at his top 100. He could actually be in a TE position and beat defenses.
@rorank never said he didnt but winslow was faster then ditka and had better hands he was a reciver in a tight ends body ditka was just a good tight end
@MrKilluminati12 Umm, last time I checked, Mike revolutionized the TE position. Kellen just lined up as a reciever because he wasn't tough enough to beat LBs.
@rorank id actually say ozzie revolutionized the position and so did jon barry before ditka....not tough enough lol thats funny yet no lb could cover him could they
@MrKilluminati12 If you HAVE to be in a certain place, you're, in my opinion, not in the right position. Kellen was so bad at getting off the line, they had to move him around. Let's say, Tony Gonzales. He can play not only on the line, but also everywhere Kellen played AND he could actually block, which Kellen was mediocre at. Kellen was a fine player, but his inability to do certain things makes him simply not as good as other TEs.
@rorank i actually disagree i feel he was an awesome tight end who revolutionized the game and if u dont feel the same way thats cool this is all opinion my view wont change and neither will your so no real point to continue this debate
Kellen Winslow, Dan Fouts, Charlie Joiner, Wes Chandler, JJ Jefferson, James Brooks... Christ, the Chargers had more weapons at their disposal then the 3rd Infantry in those Air Coryell years... If only they had any kind of defense.. They would have won 5 or 6 Super Bowls easy
@Lenfestey44 I mean if Gonzalez played in this offense with GREAT wide receivers like Winslow did..Tony still produced with scrub wide receivers and an average QB..
Jimmy Graham, Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez owe Kellen Winslow everything.

Winslow is basically a big wide receiver like today's Antonio Gates/Jimmy Graham.
A true tight end like Gronkowski who can catch AND block is twice as valuable to his team.
It's sad to see guys who don't get respect for doing the grunt work at the line.

@QBDogKiller its only Gronkowski's 2nd year you gotta give him time before you say he's as good as Gates, Winslow, and Gonzalez

@TryHardMarine
He's already better than them.
I guess you missed the 2011 NFL season.
You can still watch the super bowl and watch him play on one good ankle.

@QBDogKiller yeah but hes nothing without Tom Brady just like Wes welker

@QBDogKiller without Tom Brady he would be an average tightend most tightends could Block thats why their a "TIGHT END"
TryHardMarine 1 month ago
@TryHardMarine
Most TEs in today's game are basically big wide-receivers.
Look at Jimmy Graham, Antonio Gates, Vernon Davis, Aaron Hernandez - they can't block for shit.
Gronk and Jason Witten are the only TEs with elite receiving AND blocking skills.
The rest are either pass catchers only, blockers only or mediocre at doing both things.
QBDogKiller 1 month ago
@QBDogKiller yeah those tight ends change the way people look at the tight ends. Didnt you watch the video?
TryHardMarine 1 month ago
@TryHardMarine
Of course they're going to "change the way people look at them".
People want to see passing, passing, passing.
People don't care about a tight end blocking the Sam line-backer and clearing a 9 yard path for his running back.
Real football is in the trenches, not ESPN Fantasy Football.

In every Coryell system the TE is really the #2 wr, maybe even the #1. They usually always get 1,000 yards a season.

So the "Air Coryell" was really the "Air Winslow"/ Kellen Winslow offense?? Damm, just think if Tony Gonzalez played in an offense like this...

@apollo792 He did, the chiefs ran a version of Air Coryell when they had Trent Green
