  • The synopsis at the top of the comments notes Johnny Cymbal's performance of "Mr. Bassman" on the AMERICAN BANDSTAND show on April 19th 1963.. A funny thing happened to Johnny on that day while he was lip syncing the song live on the show. A fly kept landing on him several times..Ha ha!.. Dick Clark even made some comments about it when he interviewed Johnny afterwards and they both had a good laugh about it.

  • This came out just as I was discovering rock music on the radio. I think the Fender bass guitar killed this skill.

  • JOHNY CYMBAL hahahahahahahahahahahaha

in polish language this is funny :)

  • Not as good as the Muppets version, but not a bad version. The Muppets is still the difinitive version!

  • fucking tracks xD

  • i'm only 13 and i would prefer this music over dubstep or metal

  • One singer with double tracks being over dubbed.Classic piece.

  • @MrSteve24fps-(AND 13thQuazar)- Johnny Cymbal DOES sing both parts on "Mr. Bassman" but ONLY when he sings it LIVE in a 1993 video somewhere here on You Tube.. Also, he DOES sing the lead AND the bassman's vocals on his 1962 record, "Bachelor Man" (where he MAY have inadvertently said the F-word.).. But on THIS original recording of "Mr. Bassman" that he wrote, Johnny sings the lead, & RONNIE BRIGHT sings the bassman's vocal part.

  • @TheShitsinger I'm not the only one who hears the F-word on Bachelor Man?!

Also, I have heard an (what I assume is an early demo) of him singing this with both voices.

  • @TheDJGrandPa --- YES you are correct. I forgot to mention that original minute and a half demo or acetate that Johnny Cymbal recorded right BEFORE he recorded his huge original hit song "Mr. Bassman" that he wrote in 1962.. On that demo he is playing acoustic guitar and singing the lead vocals AND the bassman's vocal part.

  • Quite silly isn't it?

  • According to Wikipedia, Johnny Cymbal (1945-1993) was born in Scotland, and moved with his family to Canada and then to Cleveland, Ohio. His birth name was John Hendry Blair. At a young age, he was adopted by his mother's second husband, Nick Cymbal. "Mr. Bass Man" was a big hit when Johnny was only 18 years old. He was alone when he died in his sleep of a heart attack on March 16, 1993 at the age of 48.

  • I absolutely love the witty banter within the song

  • Great scat singing for both singers, and a clever narrative within the song. I would like to know who the other singer was, or did Johnny C do both parts?

  • @johni32... Thats Ronnie Bright (Mr.Bassman) of the Valentines singing with Johnny... Here's an interesting true story. Early in 1963, Johnny toured England BEFORE the British invasion bands had hit America.. Johnny singing "Mr.Bassman, was the top billing over most Brit bands back then.. Back stage there was a band waiting to go on after him & Johnny said to one band member, "Hi, I'm Johnny Cymbal".. His reply back to Johnny was, "So you are." THAT person was Paul or John of the Beatles.

  • @johni32 he did both parts

  • im only 12 but i like this song even if it was written like 40 years before i was born

  • I love it

  • kottan version? o.O

  • Great song I danced to it I love Mr.Bassman!

And Johnny Cymbal is a legend.

  • Just heard this recording by Garrison Keiller and Andrea Suchy on Praire Home Companion...I don´t think I have ever heard this song.
