He is one of those dudes - like Danny Gatton, or Shawn Lane - that just plays MUSIC. Whatever style, whatever venue, the guy just plays his ass off, and beautifully. So awesome.
Saying this is AWESOME is putting it lightly. The boys got some serious chops and knows how to use them!!! :-)
Having a soul for playing the blues simply cannot e taught and/or learned. Either one has it or one does not. Unfortunately, many play 'at' the blues.. who do not.
god, i would fucking love to see Johnny and Guthrie Govan play together....fucking god *brain explodes*...i dont know if the world is ready for the awesomeness that would ensue lol
My two favorite guitar players ever are Danny Gatton and Shawn Lane. This solo is like a perfect mix between them. I'm going to have to have 3 favorite guitar players now.
@jasonspell So, i'm not the only one noticing a glimps of Danny Gatton in his playing style ;-). Although I think perhaps Johnny is flawless, I think Danny is perhaps more creative after all. I'm going to check out Shawn Lane in a minute . :-) Thanks for the subtle hint :) ... I really like Stevy Ray Vaughan and Johnny Winter as well, although their styles are different.
OH MY, JUST WHEN I THOUGHT I HAD ALL THE BLUES GREATS FAVORITED IN MY YOUTUBE ACCOUNT, THEN I CAME ACROSS THIS HOT SHOT LICK PLAYER, AND I MEAN HE IS BURNING UP THE NECK HERE AND REALLY TELLING THE NEWS. THERE IS SO MUCH TALENT OUT THERE THAT HAS NEVER YET BEEN DISCOVERED. IS HE PLAYING THOROUGH THE LECTRONICS SYSTEM HERE GOING CORDLESS? WHO WOULD THINK BY LOOKING AT HIM WALKING DOWN THE SIDEWALK, THAT HE WOULD BE A FELLOW WHO COULD ROCK THE BLUES LIKE HE DOES HERE? MIND BLOWING!
Serious killer skills man. This is what the blues is supposed to be, betcha Robert Johnson and Howlin' Wolf stood up in their graves. May I have the tabs please, Johnny? Also, what kind of effects and amps are you using, not that it would make a difference for the rest of us... Fan 4 Life.
@smokinbluzvalv sorry to pick on you, but whats with you guys all asking for tabs? learn to play and learn music theory and you won't need tabs! blues is about feeling, not copying someone note for note on something that came from their heart. Johnny is a great player, and you can hear his influences, but even if he were to cover a tune, he makes it his own.
@chrisshootsicd How do you spell ANAL? Let's see... c h r i s s h o o t s i c d. Dude, take a chill pill or a long hit off that pipe of yours, I was just paying homage to the big boy and just for the record, most great blues guitarists don't know squat about music theory. Are you still sorry now?...
@smokinbluzvalv which greats are you talking about? because any modern professional guitarist worth his salt knows quite a bit. are you talking of the great delta blues guys or guys like bb king that had no formal training? i'm pretty sure that by his age, bb has learned how music works.
@rockinredneck57 - THANK YOU. I've been playing for 25 years and I STILL don't know shit about music-theory. Doesn't matter much at this point though. I learn almost-everything by ear (although I'm currently-learning to play Zeppelin's "The Rain Song" in it's proper alternate-tuning - Needed a YouTube video so I could at least see what the guy's playing - Almost done with it). Anyway, we're talking about blues here. All you need to know is what key it's in. Everything else is dynamics and feel.
i just discovered this guy a couple of minutes ago. and he's already one of my favourite guitarplayers. he can play everything! rock, blues, country, blugrass. and not only can play the different genres, he totally rock in every singel one of them. awsome! awsome!
This guy is awesome as good as any of today's contemporary guitarists, Bonamassa to name but one, but it's thte breadth of styles he plays with consumate ease, style and feel!!!
Johnny can play anything period! He is one of my favorites! I never get tired of his playing, he can drive it hard or lay off and make it sing! Awesome!! Joey Vaughan "World Blues Attack"
@lamiamano He plays like he does due to many long hours of practice and practically sleeping with a guitar. He has natural ability too, but he had to work to refine it. He is s good as any player I've heard and better than 99% of them. How many others heard those who came before and were influenced by them? Every guitarist today was influenced by someone else. Don't forget his fingers aren't made long and slender like most "rock god" guitarists either. He has those big sausage fingers!
@jjhotmail I'd say Johnny can hang with any player you put him on stage with. He may or may not be better, but the other guy will know he's been up against a player when it's over. Johnny makes it look so effortless. He doesn't just play a one min solo behind a band, he's at it for 9 min at a time! That's a LOT of picking! Not many guitarists can play for that long non stop.
I just put my guitar down and I'm now thinking of using it as an end table!! Crazy, mad licks with some awesome tone, even with the wind interference.
@Situious its an ELECTRIC guitar... man how good would he be...if he laid off the twinkies for a month..... you can hear the arlen roth influence coming through.... nice one...yeee haww
That's one awesome blues guitar. I salute that dude. He's really got those blues chops down. And with lots of feeling and intense progression of the licks. Nice runs and fluid motions.
He is so goddamned frickin' FANTASTIC it should be illegal! I have been a Johnny fan for a while now, but every time I hear him play, it's new and refreshing, never the same old boring crap! He's playing here like SRV and the OLD ( Duane Allman ) Allman Bros. are sharing the stage! I think both SRV and Duane would have absoulutely flipped out over Johnny, it's about time he's given the credit that is his so richly due!
@greatarachnid you see... some poeple put catagories on a "style". The FACT is... this guy can play fast which is also known as... SHREDDING. It's not a bad thing.... there are good shredders and bad ones just as there are good blues players and bad ones. Don't believe me? Get out of the house more...HAHA!
This is the first time I have seen Johnny Hiland and I'm totally blown away. Fantastic light and shade. As I said to BIgDBlues who put me on to this video Johnny knows when to shed but most of all knows when not to.
