It is nice to see a production of Pirates where the Pirate King is not Jack Sparrow! I like this production better than their MIkado. It has its ups and downs. I really don't like the trio and would prefer the women's chorus. I also hate the jump into rock occasional - it seems like such a disconnect. But the cast is great and there is a lot of funny bits. Overall it is a fun production! Thanks for posting!
@oboewizard Yes! The pirate king is more original than Jack Sparrow! G&S were makiing fun of pirates in 1879. And this is the best pirate king, Jon English, from 1994, so again, pre POTC. :D
I have done Pirates with our local Operatic Company, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope to do it again some day soon, and seeing this fine video makes me want it all the more. Well doen to all the cast, who no doubt have gone on to better and higher things. Well done.
@gemrox1 I've always enjoyed four-part harmonies at minimum. As an arranger, I find them fairly simplistic... but I agree wholeheartedly with you on the other part. Jon English does a masterful job. And don't worry... familiarity will come with time and practice.
He sure takes a lot of liberties with timing in the beginning.
However, the chorus is great.
I was in the "Simsbury Light Opera Company" in Simsbury, Ct. USA.
We would go out for drinks after rehearsal, either "Pirates" or anything else. There would be people in the tavern just waiting to hear us. One of the best times in my life.
I still think of this as a kind of "National Anthem".
I also agree. I was in a production here in the states ( I played Isabel -- a tiny part, but still fun) We stayed very true to the instrumentation and the overall feeling of the operetta. Since I'm a high school student, it was amazing to work with professionals who really know what they're doing. It was so much fun, and it went together in about two weeks. It was an amazing experience.
this was recorded at the Lyric Theatre, Brisbane, Queensland, AUSTRALIA. All the people in it are Aussies: Simon Gallagher, Jon English, Helen Donaldson, etc.
I don't know if broadway has done a similar version, but this is not it.
lol u dont get my meaning, im sorry i didnt make it clear. I am fully aware that this is not the Broadway CAST, it IS however what is called 'The Pirates of Penzance - The Broadway Version' - It's the scoring that I am talking about, It is a slightly newly arranged version of the operetta.
@tenorant This scoring was done exclusively by S&G productions, the company that produced (obviously) this performance. I highly doubt it was ever performed like this on Broadway or indeed anywhere outside of Australia.
This is such a great production, everyone is having such a good time.

Overall this is a good production, but did they have to ruin "Oh Happy Day, Oh Joyous Glee" on Sullivan?

I don't like this version. It sounds like a rock opera (les mis style) which this is not. This is light opera.
atrain118 2 years ago
I agree. Yet it's got some of the most views online. It's because Jon English is famous.

souds better with no synthed music, just a full orchestra,
and with a LX cue on Hail Poetry that floods the stage in light,
our production had 40 odd KW of light curtain on that cue!

the best in the world are the originals! performed here in the UK, still true to G+S, no rock drums, or synthesised sounds, a full chorus!!
when u've seen them at the savoy in london u'll realise nothing compares!

I have to agree that the modernized instruments are throwing it off, but the performances are still stellar.
