From the 70s to the 21st century, Neil Young still gives me the goosebumps with this song. I feel like I'm 16 again, back in 72, and I feel like getting high again!
you have to remember this song was based on a movie script of the same name written by dean stockwell, so a lot of the imagery might relate to the movie and not necessarily be metaphorical or neils big statement about earth.
The Gold Rush is almost over (eco-nomics; exploitation of the environment), and what his friend said is, unfortunately, true; except there will be no chosen ones sent with seeds to another planet, the Earth is all we have, and there really is no hope. A very sad, sad song.
Thanks!

"the Earth is all we have, and there really is no hope."
No, there's more to the picture than meets the eye.
Who are "Mother Nature's silver seed"?
Who was "Mother Nature's son"?
The "new home" is "in the sun", is it not?
The sun is the gateway to the higher dimensions.
The 'new home in the sun' is the earth in its 5th dimensional manifestation.
"Harvest" indeed! Cheers.
