Parts of this sound like Saint Thomas Aquinas "Prayer for the virtues"...like when I read the Koran and thought, this sounds like the Bible...then I found out later that Muslims know and admit that....Jesus is the source of all truth and beauty and I see truth and beauty in this...
@houseofcharm do you need the chords??? i havent played this in years (cant be bothered tuning up ) but it is great when you do opens up all sorts of harmonies that you dont get on standard tuning great song
I never ever ever get tired of this piece of beauty. When I first heard it in 1982 at 13 it brought me to the realization that Pete Townshend and the who were going to be apart of my life and forever infinite. I can't imagine Roger singing this one
It gives me the chills. I have hoped for this song for almost 25 years. Thank you for posting! I agree with Heatmister and Funkydabulous...we need more songs like this.
This is very nice but please check your spelling and the wording of the prayer carefully. I can't link to it as it is. For example, "divide," not "devied".
Listening to this song always brings tears to my eyes and your marvelous slide show amplifies its beauty. Thank you John.
Not to worry about the lyrics but for newbies to this wonderful song, you might consider updating them (if it's not too much trouble & the mood moves you).
Also (for anyone), what word is Townshend repeatably singing in the backgound while singing the various names of God?
I also found it helpful to Wiki this song for the translations.
In the background first he sings "Ki Jay" then "Meher." Ki Jay is an often used exclamation by devotees in India. It is Hindi/Sanskrit. Jay (Jaya) means Glory/Victory, Ki means To/From.
Hindu/Indian devotees usually sing/call out a name of God or a beloved spiritual master followed by ki jay (or jaya in sanskrit). In prayer or in praise. For example: Krishna Bhagwan ki Jay, Radha Bhawani ki Jay.
Bhagwan/Bhawani means God/Goddess but can also be used to adress a spiritual master in human form in who's presence one can feel/experience God or the divine nature of existence which is the Truth (Satyam), Love, Beauty (Sundaram), Harmony, Oneness. All pervading and eternal.
Like Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi or Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (Osho). One famous Indian saying, which is also the official slogan of the republic of India is that Truth is always victorious. Even though it might seem quite different (this is the nature of illusion (Maya) = that which seems real but isn't.)
Amazing! Amazing prayer, amazing musically (as a tune). Peaceful, grandiose, thrilling, enlightening! I firmly believe Pete / Pete's music is God inspired, both directly, and indirectly. Truly genious. Praise God! "For those that have ears, let them hear."
some corrections to the written lyrics attributes to lend divide you in all we see and in them all on no one shall depend unlimited and none can plum your depth you're knowledge itself you're the trinity source of truth Parabrahma Elahi and Allah
When I finally got to meet Pete in 1985, I had more questions about his songs for The Who than anything else. But, when I stepped up to him, I asked him about Baba. We spent the entire 20 minute conversation on Baba, spirituality and nothing else.
As a 19 year old (Pete was 40), I had trouble wrapping my head around what he was conveying. Now, at 43, I have only made slight progress.
Such beautiful Music and Words.. I've been a Townshend Fan since 1964. I bought "Who Came First" in 1972 expecting something completely different. Thank You, Pete, for enlighting Me on Baba's Teachings.
Thanks for posting a song I've loved since I got Pete's solo album. Just a couple of problems with the transcription. I suspect some were taken from another translation, and are just as valid - but not what Pete sings.
And yes you are right. There are a few words in the video that differ from what Pete is singing. I thought about correcting them, but because there are very few words that differ from the transcript I have, I just let it go.
Hope it didn't sound critical. Did you get some of this from another translation/version? None can plumb your depths = unfathomable.
Like it? I LOVE it. This and Let's see action have been playing since I found 'em. Thanks again.
When this came out, I was a 14-year-old fan, and thought it would be guitar-heavy. I was shocked at the spiritual content. Gilmore came out with another solo - also reserved, very tasteful album. Steve Howe's 'Beginnings' was the guitarfest I'd dreamed of.
PLEASE CORRECT THE MISTAKES. ONLY This would honor the words...
