You should take the experiment to the next phase and test out different species' egg sacs. See if she can distinguish between her breed and another. Then test the same experiment a third time only with some of the sacs fertilized and others unfertilized. It would be interesting to see if spiders can distinguish their own eggs among those factors.
good your using twesers instead of your hand trust me you really shouldnt take its egg sac unless it was an emergincy i took my wolf spiders sac because baby wasps were coming out of it and i successfully killed all the baby wasps and the wolf spider was fine the babys even hacthed and climbed up onto her back and i let it go
ENJOY!!!

Hello Sigma,
this is a very interesting vid.
(and Fabre is our master!!)
What camera are u using?
Can you do timelapse with it?
How long have u exposed the spider to CO2?
At which time it will be killing?
All the best
Steve
Are there Scytodes (Spitting Spiders) in Japan?

@SteveMcHope
hi, thx 4 watching.
my camera is canon powershot s5is.
i often attach it with a raynox super-macro lens dcr-250.
it can take interval-shots only when connected with a pc via usb.
hence if i wanna make a timelapse movie or a slow-mo, i just tweak the frame-rate (fps) of the footage using the vid editor.
yes, spitting spiders occur in jpn, too.
but ive never seen them yet.

@SteveMcHope
bugs can be immobilized immediately if the administered co2 level is high enough.
when the co2 can is out of gas, the needed exposure time gets longer.
co2 anaethtesia has been used in the field of experimental entomology worldwide.
the effect is swift and harmless to the bugs.
co2 spray cans r available at the pet shop (for aquarium).
ive conducted similar procedures for many times in my field work, during which ive killed only one wasp by unfortunate postanesthetic complication.

yeah, that would be interesting!
appreciate ur scientific suggestion.
unfortunately i was too busy to repeat the experiment with her 2nd and 3rd egg sacs.
but everybody can do this simple experiment on ur own with spiders in ur neighbourhood. :)

interesting experiment. Are you going to raise the spiderlings?
oOFamousLastWordsOo 2 years ago
unfortunately, the eggs were unfertilized.
i mean, she had been virgin in captivity although i looked for a male for her.

I didn't know spiders could lay eggs without having mated. Interesting.

me neither.
thx 4 watching, AngryDragon22!

in an original experiment, Fabre used a wolf spider (Lycosa narbonensis).
the interesting thing is, the she-wolf could not tell her own egg sac among dummies!!
so, i was surprised at this result.
im gonna try again with a japanese wolf spider some day.

wow, it sounds pretty interesting!
(i love parasitoid wasps, too!)
the other day, i used a pocket knife to examine the egg sac of a flower spider.
and the angry female spider bit into the metal knife!
quite an impressive scene.
