My IMAC petered out after two years of little use. And the 2 disk that came with it was scratched, couldn't use them. Boy, did I get stuck with a lemon. I bought a Sony same time, and it still runs damn good. Sticking with Sony!
@Marcel3540 I think it's great for this type of system. I can run OSX for video editing, music, photos, ect. And then boot Windows 7 for gaming. You get almost the best of both worlds. People like yourself always think of the cost of a Mac vs a PC, and forget about the experience. If I wanted ultra high gaming graphics PC FTW, but it comes at a cost other than the price tag.
daviddsiuser they did me a new imac and waived the shipping so i'm not tripping. You can call them at 888-854-3982 don't tell them I gave you this number! You can check out the mac on my video site bransened
I don't game natively on PCs or Macs but I do wish it had HDMI inputs so that I can use it with a PS3 or 360 when not near my TV…but ah well. An extra Firewire 800 wouldn't hurt either, though hopefully if Thunderbolt takes off I can replace my external drive chassis to work with that. Looks like exactly what I need for an extra in-between computer. Thanks for the review.
@honeybear002 Depends, for hardcore gaming on Battlefield 3, no. For filmmaking, editing and other media-related activities, It's gonna be great but that's just me looking at the specifications.
Do you think it would be stupid to buy an iMac i5 with 8gb ram and the rest standard, to do some audio production and for gaming games such as BF3? (I know, not at highest settings)
Most people buying this are doing so for HD video editing purposes - yet there isn't one decent YouTube video out there showcasing FCP, Premier etc. Perhaps you could do one? Until I see it rendering vast HD video files, I'll hold back and save for the Mac Pro.
@godsstruggler Thats EXACTLY what I'm thinking of doing on this same exact system spec, but worried it will be dog slow compared to my PC monster rig. Would love to know this too, want to buy one.
its funny because ur running at like 3.3 ghz im guessing with an i5 and im running at 5.2 GHZ on my new pc (i7-2600k), with 16gb ram 500gb ssd and two nvadia 580s. and i got mine for £989 cheaper and better i really dont understand why u would change
well i hear this is the best for the job, im interested in gaming, not to the same degree as you msot likely, i dont need full graphic settings maxed out etc, jsut for some games, casual gamer maybe, would be a bonus if it is powerful as hell, but MOSTLY looking for a mac that can run multimedia stuff, i hear final cut pro is the best tool for the job? also for recording, i hear a program on windows called reaper software is a good program, will the mac have issues running? very confusing :<
would the baseline 21.5 inch run games well, i will upgrade the ram to 8gb on store, would it run things on boot camp like bf3/bfbc2 on highest without lag and like call of duty games?
please someone HELP!? im thinking of getting either the 13" macbook pro or the 21.5" iMac (both entry level models) which one should i get? they are both the same price but with the iMac you get so much more! im going to use it for web browsing, writing up essays, a small amount of gaming and downloading movies/ music etc. all ive ever had was a laptop so i dont know how i would take to the change. please someone help me! thank you so much for taking the time to read this :)
I'm pissed with my windows based machines and I'm ready to get an iMac. Thanks for the review.
What about video editing? I really don't care about games anymore, so I'm looking for something to do video editing and music recording. Would you say the upgrade to 8GB RAM is worth it, and what about the i7? I think it's a $200 upgrade on the Apple site. Have you tried an i7 vs an i5, and if you have would you say it's worth it, or not?
@WestBuiltAMountain The highest end iMac with the i7 supports hiper threading the others don't. The Base model 21.5 iMac is still very great especially is you add the SSD. I own a PC but I know some stuff a bout Macs lol
Im in the market for a compute for Audio editing rather than video editing, but spec wise, I'll need the same. Do you recommend a mac for this type of situation vs a pc? I'm a pc user currently and I want a mac's opinion :)
@DanielCoryMusic It depends on what software you want to use. If you must have Mac software to edit audio then go for it. If you like editing on a PC better then go PC. It's all about how you use your computer. I edit on a Mac because it's the best tool for the job for me. It never boils down to Mac vs PC, it comes down to how much time I'll be messing with the computer vs getting work done.
@DanielCoryMusic With a Mac you have (legal) access to more software due to the fact you can install Windows on it aswell as OSX. If you need something like Logic, you can run it just fine (and legally without hacking). If you need to run a Windows version of Pro Tools or something, you can do it from the same machine, so best of both worlds. You can even run a virtual machine of Windows and use Windows software in OSX at the same time.
