@davidajgp there's a physical limit how clear the 35mm film can get, but the semiconductor industry is advancing quickly, sooner or later it will surpass the films
@white8ass8kika It's frame interpolation via motion estimation. Check out Twixtor. It uses mathematics to build fake frames to go in between the real ones for slow motion. *sometimes* it works.
@AffinityPhoto I use twixtor, my camera does 1080 60p. Twixtor doesnt work well with 30p. Trust me. They must have done something else. Maybe upscale 720 60p?
@white8ass8kika It's all how you shoot it. Notice in the waterfall that the photographer tracked the kayak pretty closely. The frame to frame position change is minimized. Could be 720 upscaled, but that's 1000fps so 24/25/30/60 whatever. The shutter speed was probably 1/1000.
@AffinityPhoto That said, I've been fuming a little because they are holding back a 60p mode for 1080. It would be one thing if they were the leaders in video, but your Sony (?) and Canon are pretty far ahead and a 1080p60 would have been a noteworthy addition to Nikon's cameras. Ethernet uncompressed output is cool, but not really useful for most.
@AffinityPhoto what? you obviously don't know much about the software but basically if there is a jump between each frame then you get ghosting, in complicated scenes you also get warping. At 30p the subject has to be moving pretty slowly for you to get a smooth video, i dont know if a kayak is slow enough, probably is as its not a very fast sport at all. any racket sport is too fast for 60p, i know that much
@white8ass8kika So, you figure it out yet? It was 720/60 twixtored. Probably would have worked OK with 30p. FYI, I've written optical flow vector motion estimation software before for robotics. I kinda know what I'm talking about.
@Synnergy08 right, well if you read what i said you would know that i already know that and thats the point i was making that he must have used 720p>twixtor>upscale
Sad that a 60 or 120 fps video rate was omitted for 1080 mode. Run the numbers: 16.2MP times 11fps raw VS 1920x1080@60. Raw is way more data intensive. Throw in that the buffer is 200 images deep and it becomes clear Nikon is holding back on us. Sure, down sampling takes CPU but isn't a 720p60 downsample just as intensive? Plus, the D4 has a 1:1 window mode for 2.7 crop zoom where there is no downsampling. At least give us that in trade for $6k.
I'm starting video and have I guess a noob question. How do you do these zoom in when people talk. I mean do you have 2 camera setup or you just zoom in post ? If you simply re-crop in post how do you not loose quality ? PS: amazing work on the video...
at 4:56 it goes into a super slow mo that is way faster than the top video speed of 60fps on the d4.
until that point it was good, i'm a canon fan so i wasn't impressed all THAT much. but my jaw dropped when the slow mo came on and i immediately went to look at the specs thinking i would see at least 124fps. nope, no such luck. only 60 and only that at 720. not making me switch to nikon. 1dx all the way.
but no, i would spend 6k on a canon 1dx because it is the very best in class. or at least it will be when it is released. and 6k is really not all that much considering that is 2k less than the body it is essentially replacing.
i mostly shoot still so video specs are a moot point.
don't get me wrong, i do like nikon too, it's what i started shooting with. i do know the difference between the two and i prefer canon.
@AndrewJohnMiszerak it's stretching the boundaries of believability that twixter could have pulled that much information from the extremely fast running water to make a 720 at 60fps go 1080 at the equivalent of 600 or 1200 fps, even at 15fps.
this ad hasn't even begun to make me want to purchase nikon, but i am interested in this twixter. if twixter was able to take 60fps and do that... it's clearly a program worth purchasing.
Have been shooting video with the D7000 for awhile now and although the camera is awesome have never been totally impressed with the video compression. That being said this camera produces some amazing moving images.
Did you use Nikon glass or cinema lenses and did you record to an internal card or external drive through the uncompressed HDMI signal?
Can't wait to get my hands on one even if it will prob be a year from now. Beautiful footage and camera work guys!
And with a price tag 2-3 times higher than the canon 5DMkII... nope, not worth it. If you have the dough for this, keep saving and get a C300 instead if you're looking to make film.
@asidrayne If you look at the rock at 4:20 you can see during the cut the the top half of the rock shifts a pixie, but the bottom right of the rock does not, like it was masked out in After Effects but moved a bit.
@PhotoShopChannel What do you mean? Of course it is edited we had a ton of angles. Do you want to watch every move he did? That would take longer than the video itself.
@DeepRootsMedia I'm not saying its fake, in fact I'm pretty sure its all 100% real, I was just wondering why the top half of the rock jolted down a pixel or two when the cut was made just after 4:21 .
@PhotoShopChannel Thanks for the clarification. And nice catch at 4:21! Corey was hanging on the wall shooting, his shadow was moving around and we needed to lock it.
Favorited because of how amazing the video is, whether it was filmed with Nikon or Canon, it's really good. And also Nikon is doing a very good job, about time.
I'm don't have a degree in photography and I'm no pro photographer but some people here simply do not agree with me that sensor size DOES have an effect on depth of field. Video from a full frame sensor (36x24) will result in a shallower depth of field compared to even most Hollywood films because even though most are shot on 35mm, the image is usually 3-perf format (Canon has even designed their new EOS C300 digital movie cameras with same sensor size of 3-perf format: 24.6x13.8 mm).
Awesome video, irrespective of who or what did it.. but man, that D4 is *very* impressive and totally worthy of being the successor to the D3s. Now, if I could ask anything, I would wish that they made more of them, because I personally do not want to wait 6-8 months before being able to get one!
What most people don't know is because it's a full frame sensor, video shot on this camera will have shallower depth of field when compared to most digital and film cameras used for films or HDTV broadcast (HD = usually 2/3" sensor, 35mm/Red = usually Super-35 3-perf sized sensor which is equivalent to APS).
And many cinematographers love shallow depth of field as it adds a somewhat three dimensional feel to the video rather than being flat when shot on smaller sensors.
@vangmx As a pro photographer and with a BSc in Photo Sc - sorry but your comment about depth of field is related to the size of the sensor is total nonsense. It is a function of the focal length of the lens and aperture. The full frame sensor is the same size as a 35mm still film camera.

@tresise Sorry bud, your comment is HALF nonsense. Both The size of the sensor and the lens characteristics (Speed & Focal Length) play an integral role in the depth of field of an image. A larger sensor will inherently have the ability to have a shallower depth of field than a small sensor, that is then compounded by a fast lens and a long focal length.

How in the world did they do those big sweeping crane/helicopter-looking shots out in nature? Did they transport a crane all the way out there? Incredible stuff.
This is very great short film. It makes me forget how it was recorded or even which tools or technics it used. It attracts me to get into the film, the contents, and the emotion+impression of each actor.
"Corey Rich was lucky enough to test drive the unreleased Nikon D4 and put together this gorgeous short film. The combination of these stunning shots, compelling stories, touches of slow motion, and a fitting soundtrack helps this short really stand out."

@sashimifr The slow motion is done in post, using a technique called Optical Flow, its very computer intensive, fast PC/MACs take hours to create a few seconds of footage.
@KinsTV@pjcasabuena@CedricAutier I've tried twixtor a couple of time and usually you get artefacts, especially when stuff appears/disappears such as lumps of falling water which merge/unmerge. Seen the same kind of artefacts when twixtor is used by professionals slowing down gopro frames...

This is what we call "videography" !!
Thumb up to anyone behind this film !

There doesn't seem to be any rolling shutter effect 01:10 and little or no Moire 06:16, looks as good as the Canon C300.

"Corey Rich was lucky enough to test drive the unreleased Nikon D4 and put together this gorgeous short film. The combination of these stunning shots, compelling stories, touches of slow motion, and a fitting soundtrack helps this short really stand out."

@CedricAutier also I thought the whole video was supposed to be shot @1080p, at which the D4 cannot do 50/60fps... (or am I completely wrong?)
sashimifr 1 month ago
@sashimifr The slow motion is done in post, using a technique called Optical Flow, its very computer intensive, fast PC/MACs take hours to create a few seconds of footage.

@KinsTV @pjcasabuena @CedricAutier I've tried twixtor a couple of time and usually you get artefacts, especially when stuff appears/disappears such as lumps of falling water which merge/unmerge. Seen the same kind of artefacts when twixtor is used by professionals slowing down gopro frames...
