From a book about Top of the Pops: 'We only got on TOTP once', noted Jim Reed of mid-1980s indie noiseniks The Jesus & Mary Chain. 'We were nervous and, to us, nervous equals drunk'. 'We had a few cans in the "Blue Peter" garden and I was astounded that nobody seemed to mind these alcoholic rock'n'roll types stumbling around a kids' TV set'.

Guess they were nervous because, that was their 1st appearance on Top Of The Pops, a crucially important event for any band at the time. Millions were watching that (admittedly crap) show. Getting on Top Of The Pops would establish bands as 'real' pop stars', it was like gaining promotion to the Premier League. The Reids grew up watching TOTP, despising commercial dirge and strongly rooting for outcast acts, weirdos who, to quote Jim, "looked like they shouldn't have been there"
