The "valve" action is to "flip the switch" Lego uses a 3 possition valve switches , the cam uses con rods to flip those switches back and forth. Each switch is flicked two time per revolution. Remember its not a gas motor but a Pneumatic, it pulls as well as pushes so each stroke up or down of each cyclinder is making power.
Very cute, but not very realistic. I've never seen rocker arms that move like aconnecting rods. Where are the valves? It seems like it has four crankshafts instead of one. Nice toy though.
@Wizdomx07 Pnematics: air powered rams. Lego has been making pneumatics stuff for along time now, though the parts are kind of rare and getting harder to find at good price.
@YOanimator These things eat up air like no tomorrow. they need many cubic feet per minute. If anyone wants to use one in a working model. I would sugjest not a V8 but a V4 or straight 4. They put out about the same amount of power and are much smaller and turn more RPM as well.
Are you sure? I know that the 90degree Vee gives the necesary overlap to make it run smoothly, but unless my logic is way off, it would be slightly smoother (especially at TDC and LDC) with a cross-plane crank.
Simply because theres only one piston (instead of two) per bank thats at a given point. Which might give slightly less friction, and keeps a more constant rotational speed on the crank itself. Same reason as yamaha's to use a cross-plane crank on their inline4 R1 engine.
@jonsen2k I never tested it, and you may have a point, I need to test this and see. One thing I have wanted to make for these LPE's is a real Dyno, out of Lego. The maiin issue was Lego had no NXT rotation sensor. The one in the Lego servos has alot of friction so getting a free load was not going to work. But now a third party has made a very nice one that has almost no friction. My plan is to compare peak rpm no load in a set time to loaded peak time rpm. This way i can measure rpm and power.
@jonsen2k Since the cylinders are at 90* to each other this provides the over lap needed, so the crank is at 180*. if you set the crank at 90* it would counter this and would have no offset. Now in an Inline LPE 180 makes a very rough run since one half pushing against the other, it works just not as well. So inline use 90* offsets in the crank. this way there are some pistons either halfway through pulling or pushing. This way no fly wheel is needed and you can idle at low rpms. never late!
Hey man thanks for answering! Another question. Can you just make a simple car around it, that have a aircompressor made out of legos and a gas shifter, i am from Sweden and can't spell wery good :P sry.
Well it would also a faster engine if you get rid of all the gears and made it a V6 or 3inline engine.
Ok clever. I haven't build one myself but i have seen a lot of lpe:s, where can you find good airtanks that makes a 3inline engine last long while it is installed in a lightweight legobuggy? You have your own homemade. Can you use softairgun CO 2 tanks for example?
@dacke93 Weight will be a big issue in an on board tank. The nest issue that is more troubling will be how will you regulate a air soft tank/ Co2, or any HIgh preasure tank? Even the smallest regulators are rather heavy for a Lego LPE car. Otherissues is highly compressed gases wonce released tend to very cold. The Lego parts are ABS plastic that has issues with cold. I think it could be done just no one has seemed to try it.
@dacke93 The tank was more of a 'surge tank", not needed really, but the air supply is a very large shop unit about 75 feet away. So the tank helps balance the air suppy( not much it would need to be alot bigger).
@CrewOfMasters@CrewOfMasters The parts are all Lego. One could buy kits to build this, but Lego only has one kit with pneumatics as of today and even at that it is very rare they have any in kits today, in that kit you get two rams. At 60$ for that kit it would be costly to do so.
@blitzkreig000 Pneumatic motors run on compressed air. There are some cars now that run on this idea, they have no tail pipe emissions too. A normal motor runs on gas/ other fossel fuels.
Well thank you its not the best off here on the tube Nicjasno i think is the master of Lego pneumatic motors. He has some very great designs. This was just to see what i could do, it is rather slow, but it shows how its done in a easy to do way. Nice for children to watch they can watch how function of basic motor designs. Pluss this can run a long long time and not melt :)
Lego Pneumatics are two way. The Lego Pneumatic switch directs air 3 ways. In-Out- Hold(hold is in the middle, though this is not the best set up since in switching from in to out you pass this hold position that in this use is not as efficient as if had not) Each rams has two inlets one pushes the other pulls. Rather easy to build but timing is everthing in these. This is a very old design i have much better now in a V4 that i should have out soon in a trial truck, all lego
this works as in it uses air to make it turn. yes i have used it in a few modles though in reality a v4-6 works better and fit in modles better than the 8. unless you build a real big car
well some i have collected from Kits and other I have found at Bricklink or LegoEducation. Though it seems that Lego education has few pneumatics anymore. Lego has phased out, to bad too they are fun to work with. But they now have linear actuators that are nice but wont make a LPE motor.
You could get significantly more torque by timing each pair of pistons differently OR getting rid of half of the switches - they are doing the same thing at the same time. Each switch eats some torque & rpm
The power these can make is mostly related to : air flow" dividing the flow will only cut in half so to get enough air for two clyinders to run of on switch will give less flow. It works and has less friction but in the end has less power. I tested a few 4 cly with two switches just runs out of "flow " even with more preasuer you only get so much flow. So the best trick is mod the switches and cyclinders
since the supply of air is about 50 feet away its kind of hard to say, the 1/8 hose restrickted air flow, if i had to guess it would be about 20psi at the motor. these motors really need flow over peak preasure. they use alot of air
if i build a lego pneumatic engione would i be best using a 2 stud long crank or a 3 stud long crank since i have no cams just ordinary flat technic pieces?
If you have the Large pneumatic rams, as in this video, you need the 2.5 "cam lobes" . If you short stroke it say using a 2 or over stroke. it wont run or not very well. Under stroking it will mean at the top dead center it will still try to push further than the 2 so it will try to break the crank. 3 will mean it wont be able to pass dead center as it is to far away. Hope that helps, but try it with out air to see if your idea might work , use no air just turn it by hand. Hope this helps.
If you have a regular lego engine, ie one that's not pneumatic and only turns when you push it because it's connected to the wheels, you can use the two end pieces as half-stud pieces. it'll be significantly bigger because those pieces have a stud and a half axle built on to them.
Not sure what you are saying? the strock of the rams is fixed? perhaps a part #? i would be very interested in knowing if there are other parts that would make a crank.
Well our kids are older now, but even when they were young Lego was not to appealing, Videos games etc.. I would use an other platform for robotics but Lego is by FAR the lowest cost platform and rather easy to use. This project was " abreak from my Bipedial work that gets rather complicated and mind numbing.
I'm trying to build a V-twin since I only own 3 pneumatic cylinders, its kind of hard though because the only technic piece I don't have is the one for the main crank, that goofy egg shaped piece with three cross holes in it...
if you go to bricklink, you can buy those parts for about 1$ . these "cam lobes" are the only odd space parts that i know off from lego that give the large rams the full stroker crank that these rams will need.
Kind of. but much better. Other sources but a higher price are Lego Education, there search for "Parts" one thing too about them. New rams at the lowest price you will find. i think they are 10$ for two. But most stuff BL is your source. Also check out some of the guys here that specialize in LPE motors they have some great designs, much better than mine.
awesome I looked on the lego education thing and see they have the cam lobes 25 of em for $10. the only rams I saw were the small ones, only big ones I found were in a $55 kit and there were only 2 of them with a bunch of parts I already have :/
Yep ur right , I have not been to LE in sometime, but those small rams were very rare and i have seen them go for 15-20$ EACH!! now you can get new ones for 5$ great price, oh and those air tanks as well were getting 50+$!! now 15 and these are new. you know those small ones make a great motor to and more compact, pluss the crank is 2 center not 2.5 so the crank is standard parts.
I have one of the blue air tanks and one of the small yellow rams. I suppose a small ram motor would turn quite a few more RPM than a large one due to shorter stroke and easier movement. I would also think it would use less air even at a high RPM...
Much like a real motor these must have very accurate timing, a belt will slip even a few teeth off and it wont run. Lego chains work ok but tend to fail as well so direct gear timing is best
absolutely awesome... what are you using for the air source? Did you try using the manual pump and the blue air tank that comes with normal legos? Will it run for a long time on one air tank?
An Ingersoll Rand 5hp air compressor in the garage :) These motors use alot of air more than you would want to pump by a hand pump, though a bike hand pump may work?
that's a shame... it would have been cool to have a portable air supply that moves with the car you can mount this engine on - that way you'd be able to unleash the pneumatic lego car with no restriction... add a lego remote controller, and you have an air-powered remote control car!
I had idea that would work for that i think, a high presure small, light tank. the trouble is you would need a regulator too. That would have to rather small and light as well. Even a C'O'2 bottle might work though they tend to get very cold and PVC don't like cold.
I tried running a single cylinder engine on propane from a dust removal spray. It worked, but it was hard to keep the pressure constant without a regulator. Hoses would pop off, and it wasn't very efficient, it's hard to make a good valve gear for a single cylinder.
bigger battery will work some rechargables at 2300mah will doo :P they do work in bb gun i found out the hard way charge em n get shot by them on a cold day haha but thats cool that
hey, i little understand of this machine, i m wandering how this stuff is manufactured by self. can u sell the design or machine itself. i'd like 2 buy it 4 my project
oh i thought a bit too and if you do try building a v2 first once you get that down its just a matter of adding to it v2-v4-v6-v8 etc. i have a new design that will be out soon a v6 that uses the "nicjasno" type of flipper valve. this is in a car and works very nice lots of rpm and power almost to much for lego parts
a 'v1' would just be a single cylinder engine. You need at least 2 cylinders for it to be a v, inline, boxer etc. Single cylinders need a flywheel to overcome the dead points
Yes that would be cool, though a V8 is not needed in a model car/tank. a 4-6 cyl would fit better and have more than enough power. If you look at the video of my 4cyl car you can see what i mean.
I never made a part list but in concept it is about the same to build say a V2 just add one more section you have a V4 etc. this design is ok and uses no moded parts. nicjasno's valve design is more efficient, but you need to cut abit less than an 1/8 off of the swich lever. technic parts pluss each ram needs a swich and each crank shaft section should have 4 cam lobes. for a first build i think a 4 cly is easier.
the chain in this version is not part of the timeing, its only for looks. so the tighter it was the more friction, now if it was being used for driving the valve train than it would need to be tighter.
This video is a favorite on Bogota

An Ingersoll Rand 5hp air compressor in the garage :) These motors use alot of air more than you would want to pump by a hand pump, though a bike hand pump may work?
222Doc 2 years ago
that's a shame... it would have been cool to have a portable air supply that moves with the car you can mount this engine on - that way you'd be able to unleash the pneumatic lego car with no restriction... add a lego remote controller, and you have an air-powered remote control car!
LMF5000 2 years ago
I had idea that would work for that i think, a high presure small, light tank. the trouble is you would need a regulator too. That would have to rather small and light as well. Even a C'O'2 bottle might work though they tend to get very cold and PVC don't like cold.
222Doc 2 years ago
CO2 don't tend to get cold a lot on depressurisation, i think it could work !
Or try gaz ... with some flames on exhaust it won't be cold, but cool XD
nhefix 2 years ago
haha yes like an Propane tank, from the Myth Busters:
"Do not try this at home, EVER"
222Doc 2 years ago
I tried running a single cylinder engine on propane from a dust removal spray. It worked, but it was hard to keep the pressure constant without a regulator. Hoses would pop off, and it wasn't very efficient, it's hard to make a good valve gear for a single cylinder.

Looks neat outside of having the FAN blades on BACKWARDS!!!
red33410 2 years ago
The blade has no direction its nothing but 3, 1x4 plates

hey, i little understand of this machine, i m wandering how this stuff is manufactured by self. can u sell the design or machine itself. i'd like 2 buy it 4 my project
maulikparekh09 3 years ago
holy crap! nice!!!
wat do u use to create the air pressure?
Srlancelot39 3 years ago
I think you need to replace your battery in your smoke detector, lol.

BEEP!
JBOGermany 3 years ago
Yes i did need to replace the battery, also our parrot still makes the dang beeping sound to this day, and the microwave, a double beep. lol

omg i thought it was my smoke alarm lol
i was thinking ,,,, wft its mains !

r u sure is a DOHC? i only see one cam shaft on each side of the engine
Iamover81 3 years ago
You are right it is more a twin cam.
222Doc 3 years ago
dose this run on gas or compresed air?
luvwrapper 3 years ago
compressed air noob
p990ias 3 years ago
obviously it doesn't because if it use gas it would need spark plugs to ignite the gas to make pressure
cheezyman121 3 years ago
Not to mention that the legos would melt.
klober23 3 years ago
very cool hehe :)
i think i will try to build like a v2 myself :)
quiqui1396 3 years ago
what did you use for the air suple
legoMan104 3 years ago
An Ingersoll Rand 5hp air compressor in the garage :)

do you need a moter to make it tern

Air makes the motor turn.

V8 Power!
haha
V8power923 3 years ago
you could build an air compressor with a power functions motor to run it.That way the engine could be run with no wires or hoses comming out of it.
frazled101 3 years ago
Hy can you make an instruction of this engine. I would like to build it. Thank really much
adika0620 3 years ago
The basic design is rather simple and each section is the same. I have a Brickshelf folder of this i think from the pics you could work through it.
222Doc 3 years ago
oh i thought a bit too and if you do try building a v2 first once you get that down its just a matter of adding to it v2-v4-v6-v8 etc. i have a new design that will be out soon a v6 that uses the "nicjasno" type of flipper valve. this is in a car and works very nice lots of rpm and power almost to much for lego parts
222Doc 3 years ago
is it possible to make a v1 engine?
bartmanplay 3 years ago
Yeah, quite easily :P
DragonCuber 3 years ago
a 'v1' would just be a single cylinder engine. You need at least 2 cylinders for it to be a v, inline, boxer etc. Single cylinders need a flywheel to overcome the dead points
petem1989 3 years ago
V1? You need two cylinders to make a V... hence the V-shape... dumbo
gavlang 3 years ago 2
me too I would like one.
bartmanplay 3 years ago
Way cool. thought about building a tracked vehicle and letting it go acrost the yard by itself? I think that would be cool.. or a 4x4
TheMisterP 3 years ago
Yes that would be cool, though a V8 is not needed in a model car/tank. a 4-6 cyl would fit better and have more than enough power. If you look at the video of my 4cyl car you can see what i mean.
222Doc 3 years ago
Yea, but just for the cool factor...
TheMisterP 3 years ago
Hy can you make an instruction of this engine. I would like to build it. Thank really much
adika0620 3 years ago
Cool but u cant faster?
Ravier03 3 years ago
could you set it up so it drives its own compressor and set it up on some car?
mutantroosta 3 years ago
That would be perpetual motion. Physics tells us that it is not possible, to date anyway. The air used is by far more than it could make.
I have a 4cyl car video that shows a much more powerful lego pneumatic built for a car. This was my first and is more a display.

Hi, Do you have a parts list for one of the v8 engines?
Also are there any kits for them?
dirtjumpdaniel 3 years ago
No lego has never made a kit of an engine.
222Doc 3 years ago
You're never too old for Legos. Wicked build.
frederickt 3 years ago 4
tighten the chain and it will run better... you got too much slack in it...
xmodrock 3 years ago
the chain in this version is not part of the timeing, its only for looks. so the tighter it was the more friction, now if it was being used for driving the valve train than it would need to be tighter.
222Doc 3 years ago
the top looks like a walking spider^^

I think I just pooped myself. O.o
JK, that's amazing though dude!
Too bad my mum's all like: "you're too damn old for legos"
Then I was like:*gasp* *sniffle* "nobody's too old for legos"
thien0995 3 years ago
do the things on the cam open the valves to let air in for the pneumatic pistons
Tunerboii2045 3 years ago
yes
222Doc 3 years ago
besides pneumatics does it run on electricity?
Slench101 3 years ago
The Lego motor seen is running on compressed air. All stock technic parts, no mods.
To compress air does use electritity.
222Doc 3 years ago
why dont you make all the knex parts and make a car lol
Mansell1994 3 years ago
I built a single cylinder one of these, but I had to have a massive flywheel to keep it going
