@orangetrain66 shes the first SD-9 built, still earning her keep after all those years on the rails. EMD locos are the Macks of the railways, no other company has a record to match that. to see this ol' girl still running is a nice testament to the longevity of EMD locos.
Yes, it was Diesel Days in 2007. They change things every year. It depends on the volunteers available as far as what equipment can be run on any day but they do focus on the diesels for Diesel Days.
I swear that snoring locomotive sounds exactly like my uncle at 3:00am or mabey it's one of the switch locomotives down by the yard a couple of blocks away. I don't know anymore, sometimes I get them confused.
Diesel days in the UK leave me cold. I envy you guys, your old streamliners and Rs's are pure magic. To see an E5 when a book available here in the UK states that they were all swapped in, well say no more. You guys are very lucky indeed, if only your stock would fit UK running lines. Mind you any thing we borrowed, we would do our best not to return. No offence meant. For engine sound the best we have is the class 37. All the best guys.
Well that's a prime example of a diesel engine hunting. What happens is the engine, for whatever reason (maybe a bad fuel filter or pump), is starved of fuel, so the revs go way down. Then fuel is introduced, and the engine burns it poorly, and does this. Smae thing happens when you throttle it up; the engine thinks it is starved for fuel. But its pretty cool.
No problem - I should have mentioned: locomotives made by the American Locomotive Company (like this, it is an RS-1 or RS-2) are notorious for this behavior. In service they were nightmares, I hear.

Thanks for your explanation of why the engine 'snores'.
