If you're into vinyl like I am, you should get it...the album in vinyl...don't go with the CD since they eliminated a few songs, including Crazy Water...
Sounds like Bernie Taupin to me as well. Quite a lot like his early writings. The music is what throws me. It doesn't sound like Elton John wrote it. At least not all of it. The chorus is him. Not so sure about the rest though. The production is different as well. It doesn't sound like Gus Dudgeon did this whole thing. One of my favorite Elton John albums though. A so called undiscovered gem.
On a bench, on the beach Just before the sun had gone I tried to reach you Plain faced and falling fast You looked so vacant like an empty shell Whose life had passed upon the ocean Before light shook the sky Down by the docks I saw The masts unfolding Don't turn away, please understand It's a life and a living And a way to keep the wolves away moshe shabot From hungry hands, from hungry hands
Great song, one of my all time favs from Elton...up there with Someone saved my life tonight...those were song from the time Elton was a fun guy and easy on the eyes. Pity he's turned into an overweight grinch of late. But at least we still have all the fantastic music he made...and the earlier memories of a great performer.
Amoreena2 is just wrong: Bernie Taupin certainly did write the lyrics on this song. How can you make this mistake: good grief: it's on the album and the info. is available from a 5 second search on Google. What kind of people make mistakes like this. Get it right or don't write at all please.
I bought this record for my 17 year old sister when I was 14 (don't you love those presents that stay in the house?). I always tell people Elton John introduced me to funk, which is pretty embarrassing, but it's true.
@doidid1 A long story short. In the early 70's his albums would go to #1 with Captian Fantastic in 75 and Rock of the Westies in 76 both entering the charts at #1. And at the top of his popularity he did a peace in Rolling Stone Magzine saying that he was Bi-Sexual. And with that his popularity droped and that was one of the main reasons why this wasn't a hit.
Because from this album on never had the hard hit status up to The Lion King where buzz was back up with him. But besides The Lion King and Candle in the Wind in 1997. He never got his popularity up to what is was back then. And most of his albums have been very underrated. Now I was not around when he was big in the 70's considering I was born in 1987. But he has been a hero to me since I was a young child. And I learned as much as i could about him.
I also bought every album and 45' single that I could get my hands on. At the time this was about when Songs from the west coast around that year. the only albums i didn't own by him that where released in teh us was leather jackets and 11-17-70. 1 because i never got to buy it and LJ because at the time I didn't have the internet and it was almost imposible to find a copy. And if you want to hear a lot of elton john stuff you may or maynot have heard before I would get "to be continued."
@doidid1 The way I remember it is that Elton's popularity was in decline at the time that Blue Moves came out. He had announced his retirement a couple of times by then, and had told Dick Cavett that he was bisexual (and that had an impact back then). Worst still, he broke up with Bernie (Taupin did not write these lyrics). Blue Moves is actually the last Elton album I bought. For me he was never the same after breaking it off with Bernie...and of course his voice changed.
@amoreena2 I think you will find that Bernie Taupin DID indeed write these lyrics. And as for Elton's declaration that he was bisexual I think it had little impact and much less than the rise of new wave and changing musical styles that affected a great many artists for a while, and not just Elton John.

@mizofan, it does sound just fine. Elt and Leon do make a great team! Of course, how can we resist the classic years?

@amoreena2 You can't mistake these lyrics; Taupin is the greatest lyricist to ever live, this clearly IS Taupin
