  • No talent in this filthy grotty laneway. If this is all that Melbourne has to boast about then I guess toursist will continue to avoid it like the plague.

  • Well, now i know where i wan to visit someday!! Amazing!

  • i love this place!!

whenever i go into melbourne i go here, and it's amazing!!

    gotta love melbourne.

    xx

  • was that you singing?

  • was this in the cbd? i loooooouuuuuuuuurveeeee melbourne so much i'd never be able to move anywhere else

    <3

  • graffiti is the bomb. i seriously respect everyone who does do it. i love seeing all the writings on the walls on my train rides to uni and home, i c them everyday and they still catch my attention. its not vandalism it is art! isn't art a form of expression? well i dont see how this is any different.

great video btw, u sexy peice of shit!

  • Try telling government that.

  • your a legend - great videos!!

  • Woo, go Melbourne! :D

  • the buildings the walls the material used to make these buildings.. all most likely imported so they dont own it. and if it wasnt imported the aboriginals didnt know how to make bricks anyway. we said sorry what more do you want WHO CARES ANYMORE!

  • Sorry sugar... we don't import bricks. We just blow up the sacred mountains the natives worshipped. Hey, if saying sorry makes you feel like its ok. Saying it and actually recognising the depth of the situation is something else. I'm not saying you should feel guilty... its not like you did it first hand or anything... but have you really taken a long pause to consider the magnitude of what went down and how it continues to effect this great land of oz we're proud to call home?

  • so this thread should be strictly kept to talking about paint, melbourne laneway art and how much riverbasil rocks? if you knew your history you would know that our english grandpappies declared the native people here as non-human... that australia wasn't inhabited by people, but animals. By law, you weren't allowed to come in and setup shop in a land that was settled. To go around this, the natives were declared as animals simply because they fought off the incoming white man who raped the land

  • why shut up? because it has nothing to do with this video.

    aboriginal is not racist.

its means they were the first people there and they are native australians.

  • Thats what you think aboriginal means. 'Ab' however is primarily used to say 'not' or 'away from' or 'lower value'. It means these original people are no longer the original people of this land. Its word trickery, just like the trickery used to settle the country. We think its alright, but its got subliminal undermining all throughout it. Don't be an uneducated racist... its so 1700's.

  • and how can it not have anything to do with the video? Graffiti is considered illegal in most places... cuz you're not allowed to damage other peoples property... but technically, those bricks belong to the natives.. legally... the brick walls and buildings we rant about keeping clean and sheen are actually graffiti to the natives. But hey... those damn black folk just get drunk all day and don't contribute to our earth destroying ways... what losers! right?

  • shut up about aboriginals it barely has anything to do with it.

its kick ass art work and thats final.

  • why shut up about it? its an issue. an ugly issue... uglier than some brick walls even. why even call them aboriginal? it means not original. its the little con job our sea captains did to make it legal to occupy this turf. its a racist term that is common. even the natives have become ok with being called the aliens of the land. "true blue queen... there's nothin but monkies here", which she responds "fine fine, proceed, and name all the major places after me and my dogs...".

  • Graffiti art is the biggest oxymoron since military intelligence.

  • This backlane is usually deserted, nobody wants to walk thru it.

If you want to do "art", there is a thing called a paper or canvas. Don't paint on other people's property, that is a crime for destroying other people's things.

How would you like if people come to your house and spray on your side wall?

  • uhh, that didn't exactly look like a well maintained area in the first place. the council most likely commissioned most of those artists.

  • In case you're unaware, 'australians' actually forced their way into this island. Did we ask permission if we could put bricks and buildings up on the aboriginal turf? No. Every brick you defend and call 'your own' is actually stolen property dude. Graffiti is indiginous culture. They saw rocks... they spray painted them. So more importantly than 'how would you feel if sumbody painted your wall..' - 'how would you feel if somebody killed your family and pillaged your whole culture?'. consider

  • I'm sick of Aboriginal people complaining about Australians taking there land. All they ever did on it was build small settlements on it, if we did'nt take it someone else would have done it anyway. Besides Aboriginals are very well known for being on the dole and doing nothing with there lifes

  • So since we know one day we'll all die, should we just kill each other now? Do you think your/our modern way of life is worth more than an aboriginals? Don't forget, it was us who brought in alcohol... the natives were drug free before we got here. I suppose since they couldn't handle our poisoinous concoctions that makes them less worthy of life and a right to live in a humble existance. This isn't complaining bro... this is just the reality.

  • Thats life, thats in the past now. There have been much worse things to occur in the world outside the occupation of Native lands.

  • Sure, its in the past, but we have a problem in the present that is connected our past actions. We have a society where people don't respect ownership of things because anybody can learn our history and see that it has been formed through the same grafitti mentality. Some might say the natives had a greater understanding of life (abstract as it is to us) and it was so great, they knew not to destroy the planet. What is intelligence or right to ownership based on? Who can fool the most people?

  • not trying to start a political b*tching match....but there is proof in both the sedimentary deposits, as well as snow (Amount of dissolved CO2), that the aboriginals did NOT live in harmony with the environment. we can time their exact arrival, as it coincided with massive increases in widespread fires. And they a "nomadic" lifestyle because they would travel to an area and exhaust all easily obtainable natural resources, then move on. FACT.

  • So basically since they did forest burning, we have as much right to be here, with or without their permission? The damage of aboriginals cannot be compared to our modern ways because its a different metric system entirely. Over 40,000 years some might say a modern toddler in todays world could evolve moreso... thing is we just evolved in different directions. The natives here weren't aiming to mine a mountain because the mountain spoke to them and said to go a different route.

  • Talk shit, TexasTimmy! Firestick farming was not detrimental to the Australian environment. Aboriginal people's use of fire helped to effectively manage Australia's unique landscape & prevent massive (natural) bushfires. Many of our trees benefit from controlled burnings. In fact, whitefellas now practice the same techniques that the blackfellas initiated. Also, the semi-nomadic lifestyle was an adaptation to seasonal variations - it had nothing to do with resource consumption.

    Cool vid!

  • It's a great lane.

There's always people havin a look.

The wall they are painting is a part of The Forum Theatre and it's done under commission.

    Assume a little less, learn.

  • fuk this guy.

  • this is the thing i miss about melbourne the most, walking around and the place is full of art, you always find new things to see, be them stencils or murals or public telephones hanging from a wall 5 stories up in the air.. here is brisbane, its dull and mighty boring.

  • shut your small minded mouth you pleb!!..although that art isnt the best, wouldnt you rather it there than on your fucken house!! haha get a life!

  • GOOGLEMAN 1983 says:

"Thats a shame. Why on earth would you plaster perfectly fine walls with disgusting 'art'. That lane-way looks horrific now and I'd think twice before walking down it. Anyone who saw it would perceive it to be a gang ravaged area. That purple gremlin thing is horrid. I would never allow that on my walls beit in an alleyway. Disgusting!"

F.U. GOOGLEMAN!! You're just jealous, I bet you draw like a goon

  • Take it easy mate, it's just a wall, don't have to get worked up about it.

  • where abouts is this is it near flinders st?

  • yea id think twice aswell, id be like that lane-way looks awesome but im late for my bus, but then id be like fuck the bus that lane-way looks awesome.

  • That lane way has one of the best tapas restaurants in Melbourne and a kinda nice bar too.

And for a nice bit of irony it's directly opposite the National Gallery of Victoria.

I used to have my lunch breaks there and give a few coins to the homeless dude that used to live in a box in a dis-used doorway. I don't know where the guy is now. I wonder what he thought of the 'graff' art?

  • i was there wen they were painting that mural, it was pretty cool

  • awesome,I should go and have a look

  • I live in town and see these every day.. Absolutely awesome!!! They add colour and character to an otherwise dreary landscape! Have seen some for sale at E55 though not quite like those shown in the film.. Anyone out there know of a gallery or artist who is willing to do pieces to order?

  • OMG I was there that day. Great work and nice to see some of Melbournes finest in action

  • seve prim is a douche bag get over it pussy u cant appriciate beauty in any art form can u? btw sick art the purple head thing was sick!

  • dirty punks!! get your own property and tag that am sure you wouldnt tag your own car ! punks!!

  • in melbourne your aloud to spray paint pics there so put that in your pipe and smoke it!!!

  • Graffiti is the same anywhere you go. Look at the tags in the background. The only thing nice about this lane is the bluestone path. The bricklaying job on that is art compared to the filthy grafitti on the walls (Toilet art).

  • EVERFRESH!!!

  • It looks dirty

  • Melbourne laneways are awesome - they've got great graffiti in it and not just scribbly vandalism. Same with the rails - some awesome graphics along the train lines.

  • OMG i swear that laneway is famous of got a pic of it on my myspace i recognized all the tags and peaces

  • Cool.

  • ahahha wicked!!! i love melbourne

  • that nice little asian girl at the end....didn't quite get what to say i think....check it out yourself....maybe it was the fumes and the narrow alleyway.

  • HAHA! Little asian girl. Her name is Queenie.

  • You are a sexy piece of shit!:D

  • great work

  • Bes end ever. you need to have a maasive one at the gathering

  • banksy in London is much better!

  • fucking taggers!

  • That's mad. +^+^+

  • How cool is that?!

  • really good!

  • ARGH! I hate how here people get arrested for that stuff and some of it acutally looks cool! someone got arrested for attacking a graffiti artist here recently

I want to buy a building...just so I can have graffiti artists paint it and make it look cool LEGALLY! man that would be so awesome looking...the coolest building in the block id say!

  • awesome!

  • was that you singing?

    great video! *thumbs up*

  • Cool mate.

Hey how come we never see your girlfrien...

    Wait, right, nevermind.

  • Gorgeous.

The ending never gets old :D

  • yay! riverbasil did an amazing job on the song and the video was beautiful!!

  • thank you so so so much ^_^

  • That was awesome. Canberra isn't colorful like Melbourne :)

  • thanks Paris! yeh, Melbourne in amazing ^_^

I think I'm gonna be in Canberra sometime mid 2009 for a conference, I'll come visit you hehe

  • AHHH totally! You better or i will be upset!

  • I enjoyed this vid. :D

The ending made it even better.

  • Fantastic video. I'm completely strange in that footage.

  • It's really nicw videos. It's so funny you say and their girlfriends. haha Seem to keep secret.

I like the background music. Nice combinaton.

  • river basil you sexy piece of shit

  • Riverbasil you sexy piece of art!

  • I'm art now, hey? How much is this piece of art worth?

  • That's amazing. I can draw stick figures. :)

  • stick figures FTW!

  • Now I love this type of art. Kristen is right,. you should check out Banksy stuff which it is awesome.

  • yeah we've got some of Banksy's stuff in Australia, its really valuable, and I've seen some of it in books. Quite incredible stuff

  • hahaha, I watched the ending 4 times! haha love it!

  • I stumbled upon them all quite randomly

  • What great art, graffiti doesn't have to be just tags, my favorite artist is Banksy, love spotting his work in London.

  • Banksy has some street art in Melbourne that is protected by casings bolted over the top because its so valuable haha

  • I saw an AFI tag!

  • they were painting over the vandalism and then spray painting those things, right?

  • laneway art or "graffiti" works in rotation I believe, some stays up for a certain amount of time, then they paint over it with a base colour and spray all new stuff. Its not classed as vandalism in Melbourne laneways, its art ^_^

  • well now, don't i feel silly

  • Was this work done in New Castle? It's wonderful. I would like to know where it is at. My nephew is going to Australia soon, I would love for him to take photos. THANK YOU for the beauty.

  • this is in Melbourne, in the state of Victoria, I'm in Newcastle which is in New South Wales

  • Way too cool.

  • I wish I could do that. It looks so amazing. I'm a bit of an artist myself and I've always admired street art.

  • totally do it, make up stencils even and go spray them in the dead of night ;)

  • You're right "F" the system and other cliche anti establishment quotes. I think I'm going to go find a wall, preferably government related, and spray a big picture of Riverbasil onto it, with your youtube site below. That would be awesome I just don't want to get arrested.

  • how about on the back of toilet doors?

  • Wow, that was awesome. I've always loved street art. If you like this stuff check out Banksy!

  • I'm amazed at how many people are telling me to check out Banksy! I knew Banksy was big, but not that big and well renowned.

  • such beautiful artwork ...and its dubbed as vandalisim..

    such a waste

  • Absolutely right Choppa... when will Sydney get some beautiful laneway art? Get Clover Moore onto it ;)

  • Art lmao, try calling it what it is, unsightly, depressing, destructive. Put is on canvas then maybe make a few galleries take it on, opps hang on that actually make you a valued member of society cant have that!!

  • what is uglier than brick walls? and who said who owned what land to say who could put what and where? the guys 200 years ago that killed whole civilisations and forced their fucken brick bullshit dominatrix buildings up? grafitti away boys.. make beauty where its ugly. simple tagging sux though... but hey, whatever does it for you in this world of restriction and deluded control freaks.

  • cosmicbdog i agree, i hate seeing heaps of tags everyware, but go nuts with the big murals, they add character to the walls. and its also very interesting to watch them do it.

  • .....hmmmm interesting i must calculate a response to delicate comment......DING done y put a paint in a inclosed room when u can put it for the world to see? And know the best thing about these murals? THEY COVER UP WANNA BE GANGSTERS TAGS!Those are the num nuts that make walls look like shit these guys make u actually pay attention to a wall? oo look at that brick lay out one on top of another very creative

  • I wish i lived in Melbourne. Then i could come along with high pressure water and wash that COMPLETE RUBBISH off the walls.

  • Why don't you go down to Cronulla and give all the rednecks a good spray instead.

  • Because I don't spray things.. because i'm not a complete f**king failure in life who has to express my self by defacing other peoples property.

  • But you live in a country that is a complete defacing of a culture... does that mean you're much worse than what your judging?

  • your second statement is defoundationalised by your first comment. I *don't* live in a country that is "defacing" of a culture.

  • Did you pass that around the debate team to come up with that? Obviously you're living in a supremacist state of mind and clearly I lack the profundity to communicate with somebody of your intellectual stature. All the success to you on your mighty tower. Say hi to the thesaurus club for me.

  • You don't need to be an ivory tower intellectual to work out that Graffiti (illegal or legal) is done by those people who fail at life and who should hang themselves.

  • You should make a video about it. Lets put a face to the brave words.

  • I need to upload a video to speak about Graffiti?

  • Yeah man. You want to talk about what failing is. Lets see what you actually look like so that people can see that only demented idiots hiding behind text say things like what you do.

  • Showing a video of me would neither prove what i say, or disprove it.

  • Knew it. You've got no integrity on here man. You've just proved your a comment pussy hiding behind your mighty words. Look man, reality probably is you have no success in life yourself so you look for things like graffiti to blame your self disappointment on. I don't know what you're afraid of... epic failures you mention couldn't possible work out the tangible ways to do anything to your excellent supremacy.

  • Nah if i was an epic failure at life then i would be doing videos like this one about Graffiti.

  • Oh and, clearly we live in a world where Graffiti artists are the most successful people on earth and people like me are just (you know, due to some camera obscura like you're trying to point out) massive failures. It's just the way the cookie crumbles.

  • The most obvious thing here is we are in a world where people like yourself, who are hiding from showing their faces, have no problem judging people who the same thing as them in a different medium. Your graffiti is right here bro. Tagging a bunch of your junk here in this thread. You're no better. Quite often, people that judge things feel threatened by them. And what a bind... to be threatened by failures. You must be doing great in the shadows.

  • Yeh because i don't like people scribbling their rubbish over walls, it means i have closed mind. Yeh, get fucked you c**t. You have nothing.

  • If you can't see that you are judging something and that you are in the same dynamic in some way or another... its you who needs the pity. Your mind is closed down... too arrogant to change. Fill your brain with all the fancy words you like... intelligence is worthless if you're trapped up in a box and can't see yourself in the world. Do you relate to anybody different to you? Can you see similarities in your differences?

  • yeh lets start asking questions about someone who hate graffiti. Clearly the problem must be with them. Way to go cock smoker.

  • I don't think you or other people who don't like graffiti have a problem either. But there is dimension to this and like you, I don't like tagging or disrespectful scribbles... but I love murals... a positive change come about by dealing with the problem of disrespect. There are contracted artists who probably get paid more than you and I combined for much less time. Are they failures too?

  • LOL,Buddy,Pick a spray can or even a mnice MARKER and try to do what was were doing in that lane,U CANT.

    SO SHUT UP :) .

  • I wouldn't want to do it.. because it would be a sign that my life is a failure.

  • any idea how hard it is to do a huge wildstyle piece in the freezing cold night, when its pitch black,no i dont think you do,so shut up. :)

  • oh yeh it's much more admirable than actually contributing something to society...

  • to whos society, yours, you fucken mutt, society created graffiti, how do you like that, sadcase!

  • So go write some graffiti about it then.

  • Comment removed

  • I wrote that last comment and the one on your page, Justin, so you can repley to me..... poofta, anyways its not sposed to be debate about graffiti, go take it up with your local council if your so worried, looks legal anyways they were painting in the day, geta life.

  • The government has nothing to do with this. And I love it if people tag my fence, because i can wash it off in an instant and know that I spoiled some losers day. It's surprising that graffiti artists can afford paint, seeing as they are stupid pov cunts and all.

  • You do realise humans have been spray painting for at least 40,000 years. Check out some cave paintings with 'mouth sprayed' technique.

Graffiti is not about tagging (your fence), or vandalism, its about pieces of art, stencilling, witty social commentary, you philestine. Its not about the c word either. BTW, you can't wash off paint, you need to paint over it, scrape it, or burn it off to get rid of it.

  • 1) Humans have been murdering for 40,000 years as well.

    2) If graffiti was at all "normal", then the building would have had graffiti put on it by the people who BUILT it.

  • @professordavos if graffiti isnt about tagging then why do critics and government and police call it all graffiti it is fucking graffiti thats what tagging is what you see in melbourne is art

  • @PowdeRade

Fair point. We should stop calling it graffiti, and just call it art. On the other hand, not everything you see in Melbourne is art. Melbourne is not the be all and end all in Australia, although every time I go there, the insularity of the locals astounds me.

    @JustinFromSydney

Lots of buildings do have 'art' on them put there by the people who built them. On the other hand, lots of buildings are ugly and have a lot of room for improvement.

  • @JustinFromSydney you know tagging isnt all about lets hit up their and if they wash it off we will be bummed its fuckin hilarious when you guys wash it off straight away cause we come back and hit it over and over again and you end up being the people that have their day ruined

  • YES!

    I GRAFFITI'D A WALL.

    TAKE THAT SOCIETY!

  • @JustinFromSydney yes because we are all out to piss of society cause what we arnt par tof society cause were not "normal" fuck off cunt alot of graffers are docters business man security guards let me guess you think that were all about fuck society and fuck the system? you have alot to learn how bout you find a woman and move out of your mums and open your eyes to the real world graffiti is wlecome in large parts of the world

  • "alot of graffers are docters business man security guards"

    hahahahahahaha

  • @JustinFromSydney hey mate look at the amount of graffiti their is you think were gonna stop cause a keyboard warrior doesnt like it

  • lol maybe I should make a tag or somefing to let everyone knwo how much of a keyboard warrior i am.

KEYBOAR-WARIORS. and then put some differen colours and lines around it. to let eveyone know how awesome i am.

  • @cosmicbdog tru that ive heard of some murals being done in peoples lounge rooms like holy fuck out their stuff and getting a 10 grand for em its better the buying some shit painting from ages ago that your 5 year olds could do for 500 grand

  • OMG hosier lane!!

its like one of my fave places in the city

its little things like that make me glad i live in melbourne and not sydney

  • AMEN!

  • @casii93

Only people in Melbourne think that way. No one else cares.

  • some cool art there Nick!

  • My left eye is itchy... any tips?

  • dance magic dance

  • That didn't work and my eyes is still itchy, and now I'm pregnant. I'm sueing you.

  • That big purple monster thing looked s good.

And i loved the ending :P

  • there is so much amazing graffiti around the city, its amazing! the video doesn't do it justice. In some places the street art images are so valuable they have perspex bolted over the top of them to prevent thieves

  • awesome

  • haha the ending took the sexy piece of shit phrase to a new song.

That song you made singing and stuff was awesome Nick!!!

  • THANKS TOM! You rock my socks ^_^

  • ooh, awesome...

    haha, lol, loved the ending.

  • there's the intro (live)
